Are the Mewtwo Movies canon to the anime?

Does Mewtwo fit into the anime timeline?

I was just wondering with the new movie coming up that has Mewtwo in it. I know the escape scene from the TR base was shown in the movie Mewtwo Strikes Back in the anime episode Showdown at the Poke' Corral! At the end of the first movie Mewtwo erased everyone's memories.

The second movie Mewtwo Returns showed that Ash still got to remember Mewtwo at the end of the movie as the clones went out into the world and Mewtwo traveled out on this own.

That being said in the movie preview Ash says Mewtwo after he saves the group and some wild Pokemon. I wonder if TRio will recognize him as well.

So, just to make sure the First Movie and Mewtwo Returns are canon to the anime timeline?

The first one definitely is due to Mewtwo's appearances in the anime, a couple of which appear in the actual movie like Gary's Gym battle and destroying where Giovanni was keeping it. Mewtwo Returns is cannon as well if Ash remembers Mewtwo in the upcoming movie like he did in the trailer. Personally, aside from the Victini movie, I consider all of the movies canon to the anime, but those two certainly are canon.

Crap, I picked "no" by mistake. Anyway, yeah, I do think they're canon. Like Hidden Mew said, we saw Mewtwo in the flesh in the Tokiwa Gym episode, that's undeniable proof that they're canon.

Well, the first movie certainly is. The special, Mewtwo Returns, is debatable since these events were never spoken of again. If it is true Ash remembers him, and indeed, he would be the only one here that WOULD know what Mewtwo is other than TR, then it would have to be an essential part of the timeline. If this was mentioned in Mastermind, I don't remember, but then, we would have to determine if that was supposed to be part of the continuity as well. The Mewtwo in Mastermind is an illusion, though, so it would matter little. All that is important is if they knew it was Mewtwo.

Ash recognized Mewtwo in the trailer for Movie 16, so obviously Mewtwo Returns is canon too.

Ash recognizing Mewtwo in the trailer means little to me. How many times have the Movies' trailers shown things that were either completely different/didn't happen at all in the final product? So I'm not buying it just yet...

That said, I'm gonna have to say a begrudged "Yes".

What reason is there to think that they are not canon? Absence of evidence in Mewtwo Returns' case isn't a reason; not everything has to be spelled out in bold letters (although the upcoming movie will probably do just that).

I call them canon too. Yet, the "Mewtwo in Unova" thing may shuffle things up again...

I never understood why people even question the canonicity of Mewtwo's story in the first place. Scenes from his movie appear in the anime for Pete's sake! "Mewtwo Returns", often mistaken to be a movie, is actually an hour-long TV special that aired during the anime's run in its usual timeslot in Japan, complete with the current opening and ending at the time. If Legend of Raikou is considered canon, then hell, Mewtwo Returns should be considered canon for the fact that it's a sequel to a canon movie and even aired on Japanese TV in place of the usual Pokemon episode.

Despite any errors that may or may not be in the movies,
They were intended to be canon when made
so, yes the Movies are 100% canon.
