How canon are the movies? I've seen some say that the movies are canon, and others say that the movies aren't. Opinions?

Re: The Movies

Movie 1 = We see Mewtwo in several Kanto eps
Movie 2 = TR says they saw a Lugia in the Orange Islands during Whirl Island eps in Johto
Movie 3 = No direct references, aside from Ash recognizing Entei and Unown in late Johto
Movie 4 = Sammy is Prof. Oak, Ash tells Eusine he saw Suicune before
Movie 5 = No direct references
Movie 6 = Butler worked for Team Magma
Movie 7 = Drew's hometown is from the movie, and in the Deoxys Ranger ep in BF, they reference the one from the movie
Movie 8 = Aura subplot continues into DP
Movie 9 = No direct references
Movie 10 = Dialga/Palkia recognized in DP
Movie 11 = Same
Movie 12 = Same

This. And if I recall correctly, Dawn brought out her Lunar Wing that she bought back in movie 10 in the episode with Darkrai/Cresselia.

Re: The Movies

What about the Mirage special, we see Latias and Latios from Pikachu's memory.

Re: The Movies

I believe that they are very loosely based canon. Not enough to make a big difference, except in other movies.

Re: The Movies

In addition to the above-mentioned, in the recent Shaymin episode, the group recognized Shaymin at sight and knew perfectly well what a Gracedia flower was, while in the movies they were completely unfamiliar with both.

There's absolutely no good explanation for why they're supposedly non-canon.

Re: The Movies

Some movies, but not all of them, are canon (like Destiny Deoxys; Professor Lund's research is mentioned in Pokemon Ranger! Deoxys Crisis! in the Battle Frontier saga).

Re: The Movies

All movies are canon and people just delude themselves by thinking they're not for arbitrary reasons. [/thread]

Re: The Movies

I consider them canon. There's no reason they shouldn't be.

Re: The Movies

The only argument people have for the movies *not* being canon, that I've seen, is that some of them aren't ever mentioned again. But if you're going by that logic, then all the show's fillers aren't canon, either.

There's no reason for them not to be. Like Dogasu said, if they arne't canon because they're never mentioned again, then the fillers aren't canon either.

They're canon and they'll drop little references every now and then to remind us of that fact, but don't ever expect Ash to go "Hey remember that time we did (insert specific movie characters and pretty much the entire plot of a movie).

Exactly! With that logic, half of the whole show isn't canon -_- I'll never understand why some people insist that movies aren't canon... every kind of anime Pokémon has is "canon"... the only thing that isn't related to the regular show is the three MD eps which we can assume are simply a different dimension, just like the Togepi or Unown or Dialga/Palkia/Giratina/Arceus have their own dimensions

The movies are not. Anything from the tv series anime will be reflected onto the movies but not the other way round, and doesn't have any affect on the plot or character development or anything except to showcase specific pokemon.

Well, the Pichu shorts have Nyarth living in Millennium town and being on semi-friendly basis with the Pichu gang instead of roaming around with the rest of Team Rocket hunting down Pikachu, and the ANA Pikachu shorts largely seem to rewrite character backgrounds to suit the plot (evil entrepeneur Nyarth?), so none of them really fit into "canon".

Yeah, not like it matters, but if you bring up the Mystery Dungeon shorts, might as well mention these, too.

Well, was the "vacation from TR" thing dub added? if he said something similar in the original too, then we can assume it could take place around the early Johto saga eps in some time the TRio took a little break (we don't see -everything- that happen to the charaters so it's possible)

I don't remember these shorts as good as the Chronicles Pichu eps, but couldn't it be that the twerps and TRio simply left their Poké in some parks for Pokémon vacation similar to the movie 1 short?

I guess it is a little weird to try to place these things to fit between episodes... but I still wouldn't be too sure to call them "non-canon"... not that I understand what the Johto this "canon" stupidity is all about...
Fans think about the most ridiculous things possible =\ seriously... just watch and enjoy it
Canon, non canon, filler, non filler... WTF?!
