Are there other creatures other than Pokemon in the Pokemon world? (Ex. fish, birds, insects, etc.) and I dont mean Pokemon.

This post wasn't really related to Pokemon economy, so I moved it. Please don't post off-topic.

In any case, I think there are. I'll explain my reasons later...maybe.

I'd say when indigo was around they had to throw a few in to fill in gaps that were there, but as the animal univerise in Pokemon increases so does the atmosphere of Pokemon...thus replacing the real animals.

The episode when Ash wins the Cascade Badge - you can see actual fish in the Cerulean Gym Aquarium.

I think so, but due to Pokemon being dominate they are thrown into hiding and domestication.

Yeah, well, that's a matter of interpretation. As I don't see pokemon and animals coexisting, I take the idea that pokemon are the animals of the pokemon world.

This idea strongly affects my view on everything else.

well OBVIOUSLY there would be some animals in the world. i mean if there were no such thing as mice, and you heard dex saying "Pikachu, The Electric Mouse Pokemon," you'd be going "WTF? whats a mouse?"

EDIT: then again it could just be a VERY big hole in the story.

When Game Freak designed the Pokédex, they did it with us in mind. Since the anime Pokédex follows the same definitions, it is for the viewers rather than the characters. (Which makes sense since Ash used to be critisised for using his Pokédex on Pokémon he had seen before.)

Fish are also seen when the St. Anne sinks. Yet the aquarium fish disappear at some point since it's mainly only Horsea and Starmie that are seen in there now.

They probably died because Misty and her sisters only know how to take care of pokemon :-(

but I think its a weak excuse to say they were thinking of us in mind, because you could argue that its a Role Playing Game, and you are playing yourself born into that world.

I think we could argue animals do exisit because plants and plant type pokemon exsist. Also the idea of only having so little types of creatures in an area seems unrealistic.

Well, having super powered rats and normal rats live in an area is harder for me to imagine than saying that the pokemon has as many pokemon as we do animals just happens that they aren't shown or represented completely in pokemon games and anime.

Also, if it says the electric mouse pokemon, you could argue that in the world of pokemon, the word mouse describes pikachu exclusively.

As I said, interpretation.

There has to be real animals, where do you think they get the hot dogs and hamburgers from?

There have been animals, but their appearences became fewer and fewer until not at all. But, since it is the pokemon world afterall, you're probably not supposed to think about that. -_-

Not entirely true. I saw the Eevee card from, I think, either the old base set or Jungle booster TCG. In it, Eevee was playing with/chasing little white butterflies. Whether insects count as animals, who's to say?

Yes, insects are animals! :)

Next time you watch an episode of the anime, listen to the ambient sound track--there are a couple of things people often take for granted. Notice that there are always crickets and other insects chirping in night scenes in the anime. For that matter, there are frequently birds singing in daytime scenes. We don't have any songbird Pokemon... Before Wingull, there were also gull sounds in the ambient sound track when the gang went to the beach.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the mongoose from the episode "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak." (Although granted, it was an illusion.) I believe the Pidgeotto in the third episode was also eating a worm when Ash and Caterpie happened upon it. :)

If Pokemon were the only animals in their world, I would think that would make for quite an unbalanced ecosystem. But since Pokemon are special animals, and Pokemon is what Nintendo is selling, it makes sense to foreground Pokemon!

It would be unbalanced with animals as well. And really, what is the difference between pokemon and animals? In my opinion, nothing, so I just can't see a pidgey and a pidgeon both existing.

Pokemon quickly regenerate from wounds, have super powers, and near-human intelligence or above? Also the whole evolution thing. All of which seperate them from regular animals fairly drastically.
