I'm not saying this as a shipper, I don't ship any of the psuedo rivals with the protagonists.

But, they seem like they're supposed to be love-interests. They're defiantly not rivals. They aren't even trainers. They're your friends.

May when you play Brendan seems pretty worried about your safety, but that's more in a maternal-sister way.

Brendan though...His "I just saw a huge green Pokémon flying across the sky!....I wish you were there, *name*" line seems pretty romantic. He's also constantly bugging you and helping you.

Dawn..I don't know about Dawn. I never played as Lucas for more then Gardenia's gym. But she's the same as Lucas except for her personality (she's bubbly and Lucas is more of a joker).
Her "Sigh... To be with that special someone in a wonderful Villa like this... I think it's a nice dream to have." line can be taken as romantic though.

Lucas..Is the same as Dawn. Constantly helping you because you're his buddy and you both are helping Rowan. Calling you his friend and such.

Mars calls you and Dawn/Lucas a "lovey-dovey" couple in the english version.

I can't say anything about Kotone and Hibiki since I've never played that game and you can't find much on their interactions online. But they are childhood friends which is a common romance trope.

..
Does anyone else think GF is trying to make them seem like love interests?

Yep. Ever read Pokemon-X? Ever read Pokemon Adventures?

Case in point. The psuedos are love interests and the power of love can crush any environmental extremists/psychopaths from space.

This is going to be my new signature. No, I don't read X or Adventures, but I do know Adventures' plots, but they are not game canon, so yeah...

And don't forget that the rivals have been quite fanservicy for female fans. Pseudos and Wally are basically moes, Pearl is a cute blond whom many fangirls self-insert ships, and Silver is the cool, sexy bastard, whom many fangirls fangirl over. Green is a jerk with a cool hairstyle, cool clothes, and provides good yaoi for yaoi fangirls. Well, fruit doesn't fall far from the tree...

LOL^

I'd have mentioned Kotone but... she doesn't do anything.

Yes, because they are friends,, so obviously they'd be worried :/

Romantic? He saw something cool he thought you might enjoy. Why is he helping you? Because you're friends.

A special someone doesn't have to be Lucas, she likes the villa :/

They are ten, so saying they are a couple when they should think the opposite sex is "icky" will just annoy them. Besides, Mars is probably like most of the shipping fandom where friendship = love.

I always got the feeling that May had a thing for Brandon. She seemed to get a bit flustered when they first met in Emerald.

Well, that is true. Also like in Pokemon Ranger, when Lunick is like, "Something, something... I hope we can go on a mission together, another time -insert name-"
I don't really care about the rivals being love interests that much.

I swear I saw this topic on Serebii a few days ago :/

Anyway, I don't know really, it's an interesting concept. Although a lot of people are mistaking general friendship for love, which is annoying.
