Ash and Gary's broken Pokeball

Ok, so Gary got the Red half, Ash got the White half. After Gary looses, he gives Ash the red half of it, later, Ash gives Gary the red half back. Was it suposed to be that Ash wanted both of them to keep the half they caught on the fishing rod? or was it suposed to be that they swapped halfs, and that both were red was just an error?
 
Wasn't it a new Pokeball that he broke? It was meant to symbolize that, as the last Pokeball had represented the beginning and end of their rivalry, the new halves represented their deepening friendship and a new beginning.
