Ash always gets at least one Starter from each region:

He got all three from Kanto, Johto, and unova
He got one from Hoenn and Kalos
He got two from Sinnoh and Alola

How many would you give Ash and why? In my opinion, one is good enough. Then the Pokemon would be special, since it's a starter.

Is this for writing Ash as a character in a fic, I assume?

I wouldn't automatically equate "leader" with "starter," though. Pikachu seems to be the leader over any other 'mon Ash could ever have. Also, a starter's personality may not be the leader type. I couldn't see Ash's Chikorita ever being the leader type, for example.

No, this is all about opinion. I've already begun my story, and have decided on the six I'm going to get.
I guess you are right about the leader thing. I guess, special would be a better way to put it.
We are talking about the Anime specifically. Should Ash have gotten as many as he did in Kanto, Johto, and Unova? Was it a good idea?

If this is about the anime in general, I'm going to move this to Anime & Manga, then. :)

Personally, I didn't mind seeing him get the starters. They're always such a big part of each generation that giving them to the characters was a good way to show them off and advertise new generations to the fans.

I don't want him to get loads of starters like he did in Unova - it meant that other Pokemon couldn't be shown off in the anime. I think he should get 1 like the rest of us! The whole point of going to another region is so that the writers can show off the new Pokemon as a marketing tool to make you buy merchandise or the games. In Unova, he didn't have many new Pokemon and he had 3 starters. His more unique Pokemon had more character development that was interesting to watch. I'm not saying starter development isn't interesting but Pokemon like Scraggy are adorable in the anime :P

I think Ash should always get a starter, because it is a good way to further expose the Pokemon that people will be choosing when they first start out. The starters, in a way, are essentially the mascots for each generation, so having Ash catch them is always a nice thing. I think its best though when he catches one or two. That way, other Pokemon that aren't starters can get more exposure on his team. Any starter he doesn't catch should go to his companions I think. It worked out nicely in Hoenn, Sinnoh, Kalos, and Alola.

I'm torn.

On the one hand, the anime does have issue sharing good spotlight with starters.

On the other, Chespin.

Sorry, but just how little we saw of Quiladin and Chesnaught because of how the series was handled is in my list of issues with XY, which I love but am not unaware of faults.

Let's also not forget about Mudkip.

it depends from the starters and their evolutions, battles and relations they could have...

If I want Ash to get a pokemon , then a good one, that can fully evolved and show full potential in battles... or have atleast wins and be funny as Totodile.

This is a neat question!

I think overall, I would prefer if Ash gets, at least, one starter while his companion(s) can get another. I really liked the interactions Dawn had with her Piplup, May with her Torchic, and Serena with her Fennekin (in fact, I'm just a fan of the female lead having a starter in general)-all of that was possible because Ash didn't collect all three starters in those regions. By limiting the amount of starters Ash receives as well, it allows for more animation and focus to be given to other Pokemon within the given regional Pokedex. And as other users have said before, we can see ourselves through him (as well as his friends) better because it's similar to the party experience a Pokemon player would have.

That being said, I am a fan of when the anime has all the starters interact together. And that usually happens best when they're all under Ash's ownership. If they go this route again, then I hope they all get a chance to develop like Ash's teams in Sinnoh and Kalos did-his Unovian starters suffered due to poor writing and having to share the spotlight by being in rotation.

I think the best female lead and starter relationship has got to be Dawn and Piplup. Piplup's personality and character development were amazing and it really suited Dawn. In my opinion, it is up there with Ash and Pikachu.
