Ok so there always seems to be a travel companion with Ash and even though I'm 100% sure the writers wouldn't do this...How would you feel if the story was just Ash and pikachu by themselves. Would it get boring or would you like the fact that he can focus solely on battling and gyms.

Thoughts!!

Then we'd lose a lot of character development. Who is Ash going to interact with in episodes? Sometimes episodes are just that Ash group and TR. So, what? Is Ash going to spend his time playing cards with Pikachu and getting annoyed with TR?

Name one show where there's only a single human protagonist.

Can't? Because it simply doesn't work. The writers would be forced to rely on interactions with Ash's Pokémon, and you can only go so far with that.

Not to mention that getting rid of the female companion automatically cuts the target demographic in half, and you can't really handwave important things like taking care of oneself away from home when you're only a kid.

To be honest, if Pokémon training was a real pasttime, trainers would most likely be in groups rather then being alone.

Quoting for agreement.

Has there been a 100+ episode show/cartoon where a character is alone. Maybe they could make a movie, or a few episodes, but a whole series or 100+ episodes?

The only way they could work it is if they relied heavily on COTDs. Otherwise it would be boring.

I'd rather Brock come back wearing girl's clothing and wearing lipstick then Ash travel alone. With the exception that he catches a talking Pokemon* and it's in every episode, maybe one that could and does evolve, perhaps ignore the catching a Pokemon and give Pikachu the ability to talk, or have all of his Pokemon be able to talk.

* I originally put human so it read "he catches a talking human"

Did you guys ever watch the last Johto episode, "Hoenn Alone?"

That episode was terrible. Its the perfect example of what the show would be like with only Ash/Pikachu and Team Rocket.

Remember how dumb that ep was? They ended the original series with a crappy filler-type episode.

Are you sure it's dumb because of the premisis or is it dumb because it's a Jotho episode?

That was the ep where some Haunter was harassing a group of Rattata/Oddish. Ash/Pikachu were traveling on a ship from Johto to Hoenn, and Ash had no travel companions for that one episode.

I believe aside from the first episode of the show, that was the only other episode where Ash was by himself with no travel companions.

It really wouldn't be interesting and would take a lot out of the show... Plus, no main storyline for main girl = more filler... no thanks.

yeah it may not have been the BEST episode but i don't think it was horrible....

Okay, I am only 3 minutes in and this episode is painful. Everyone is talking about how Ash is on his own with Pikachu and I can already see that TR is just gonna attack and get beat AGAIN, and... wow, this episode is so fillerific and pointless that... Okay, now I'm fast forwarding and Ash has realized he was an idiot and left his pokemon with Oak... okay, I'm done. This episode IS bad. We need Brock to say something or fall in love with a girl, and we need a girl for Ash to actually talk to... Scott's right.

It wasn't a great episode by any means, but I didn't think that it was that bad. It does show that Ash needs to have traveling companions with him in order to make events more interesting. To be honest, it felt similar to those kind of Pikachu movies with Pikachu helping these random wild Pokemon. It was okay, but not that great.

I also don't think that it was a filler-type of episode. It does explain why Pikachu was so sick in the following episode, which led Ash to meet Prof. Birch and May, so it isn't like anything important did not happen in that episode.

Anyway, I don't think that the writers would have Ash traveling by himself for the next region. That would really limit the interactions he could have on the show and then we wouldn't have another trainer with a different goal with him so that the show wouldn't be always focused on gyms.

I remember watching Hoenn Alone only once, during that 72 hour Pokemon-athon Cartoon Network had before it starting running the Diamond and Pearl episodes 2 and half years ago. And the only reason I remember it is because it was just so terrible, and I have a problem forgetting terrible things.

If the show changes to the point that we'll have Hoenn Alone-esque episodes every week, the ratings will plummet in a heartbeat. It's just not a good premise; the show needs character interaction and development, let alone the fact that it would get stale pretty quickly if the show only focused on one person.

Keep the status quo with Ash, the regional lady, and someone who takes care of/acts as the father figure of the former two. There's no need to change it.

I must have been confusing Hoenn Alone with the one after.

"Hoenn Alone," was the last Johto episode. It was the ep that came after Misty's goodbye episode but before the first Hoenn episode.

Essentially it was just an ep with Ash alone going on a boat from Kanto to Hoenn, he and TR were the only major characters in it.

If it was just Ash and Pikachu the story would be so boring. IMO main characters need people along side them to bring out their personality and to add drama and/or comedy. Something like that.

If it were just Ash and Pikachu, they would need to step up character of the day depth big time or else it would get very boring after a short while. There's nothing wrong with Ash being on his own for an occasional episode between generations, because all the change is exciting and whatnot, but that's about it.

If Ash was traveling all by himself, I wouldn't even watch the show. After all, his traveling companions (and the gags associated with them) are what make the show interesting.
