I have an explanation for why Ash doesn't have very many Pokemon. Ash is a nuzlocke player. Minus the releasing the Pokemon when they faint. But people give him free badges for saving their gym or doing some other valiant act or something. So Ash is Nuzlocking on Very Easy mode.

1. Did he ever release a Pokemon when they fainted?
2. Ash being given free badges, as far as I know, only ever happened in Kanto.

Not to be rude but that theory makes no sense whatsoever. The whole point of Nuzlocking is to release Pokémon that faint. Ash has never done that. Another rule is that one can only catch the first Pokémon encountered in an area. Ash has caught both Pidgeotto and Caterpie in Viridian Forest.

Besides that, the Nuzlocke theory was made up by fans and is not officially supported by the creators. Do you really think that even if Ash was the personification of a certain playing style in the games, they would base him on a fan concept?

Personally, I think that Paul would fit the role of Nuzlocke player better than Ash. However, he didn't release all Pokémon that fainted. Only those that disappointed him or had no potential.

Besides, Ash got free Badges only in Kanto. After that, he obtained them in the "normal" way.

Nuzlocke doesn't apply to the anime. I don't know much about it but it is some sort of new style that people use to play the games.

Well, I don't mean literally nuzlocke. Just, you know, the feel of nuzlocke.
I don't do Nuzlocke plays, but I'm pretty sure catching 30 Tauros isn't in the rules.
Well, he did give them to Professor Oak. I fact, lots of his Pokemon were sent to Professor Oak, and never used.
