Ash Ketchum is lazy

Has anyone noticed in season 1 ( as that's all I have watched so far) that none of the gym badges ash has, he has actually won in a proper battle against the gym leaders. He has always been given them for "saving the day" pft like team rocket are that hard anyway.

Yeah, and he was constantly called out on it as well by Misty and Brock. In later Season this isn't the case, though for some reason he still has trouble. His pikachu should be level 100 and trouncing the Gyms single handedly by now. Its one of the reasons I don't watch the newer seasons much. Logically at this point Ash should be like fifteen or something, and while he's matured a little, he still looks the same and still has to 'work' to win battles and think up new strategies that aren't actually new because he already thought of them like two seasons ago.

In the first season yes he had problems getting them legit. After that his gym battles generally got far better and far more interesting (until Unova ) unless you count that battle against poor Wattson.

He wasn't so much lazy as just incompetent and unskilled to the point that Gym Leaders felt bad for him and just gave him badges for showing effort and spirit.

Actually, he did beat at least three of the Kanto gym leaders in battles proper. It's true that Kanto was ridiculously high on the Pity Badge plot device (one reason why I can't place the original season on too high a pedestal, nostalgia be damned) but as others have said that was a long time ago.

Surge, Koga, and Blaine would all like to talk to you about that. Besides, that was 14 seasons ago, so present tense isn't appropriate.
