Well, I admit he was cooler since the beginning, but he was WAY TOO childish. In his present state now, I see some changes in him but I believe he's still underdeveloped a little. I guess the only way to maximize his growth is if his monster aibou, Pikachu, agrees to evolve which I do not think many people would want.

I don't; it's nice to see him actually develop as a trainer and a person. He's come a long way and that's cool to see happen.

EDIX: I also don't see how Pikachu evolving will give him more growth.

Nah.

Ash is fine the way he is now. ^^

In my opinion, I didn't like Ash's personality (in the script) much, back in season one. The dub writers made him TOO dense!

That's why I like things better now, since Ash is much smarter than he used to be in the anime. Every now and then, he still has what I like to call a "dense moment", so it's not like that bit of his personality is gone. Ash just isn't a newbie anymore, so he doesn't make as many mistakes as he did back in season one.

I like that he's matured a lot. It surprised me, but I like it. Compare the "million postcards" screaming Ash from EP025 to the "guess I'll feel a bit weird" calm Ash from AG178. While he was hilarious in his reaction in that episode, it's good that he doesn't do that stuff anymore.

Plus, while Gary may have been an arrogant asshole, Ash was just a giant jackass who thought he had to beat everyone else.

I think it's appropriate, how pathetic would he be if he still released every pokemon he caught, making dimwitted mistakes, and not understanding Brock's perverted actions after still getting all his badges and going as far as he's gone.

Personally I like that he is more of an expert trainer now, almost like a coaching role for Hikari. It also makes time seem like it passes.

Personally, I think Pokemon can use all the character development it can get. For a long running show, good character development can really make it stand out. Besides, if you really want ash to show his immaturity... he still can't see through Team Rocket's obvious costumes and traps.

I also like how Ash has matured over the duration of the anime. He's not so dense anymore, though he still can get a little careless at times (Pokélantis ruins, anyone?) and I prefer his more mature personality over the one he demonstrated at the beginning of the anime.

Yah, I agree with most people on this thread. It's a good thing Ash has become more mature. Would you really want him to go around saying every trainer he ment was crap today? (I've noticed this patern in early Indigo. Ash basicly called every trainer he ment crap. A.J. and Samuri come to mind)

Ash's tolerance has obviously broadened a lot since the beginning what with gaining so much experience and so forth.
Like in the Celadon City episode where he didn't hide his dislike towards perfume - in fact he'd rather blurt out his dislike thus insulting quite a few in that manner. Now, on the other hand, he's more "..eh" about it. Sure, he'll admit it if something's not of his fancy, but he doesn't prance about it anymore.
In general he's not as much of a in-your-face type anymore. He's a lot more relaxed in that manner, which I find a lot better.

I dislike how people draw an almost direct line to maturity and intelligence, though. Ash isn't immature just because he has his dense moments - he's just not bright =P

Let's put it this way:

Ash was a (loveable) moron for most of Kanto and Orange.

In Johto he matured a little bit, but thanks to Misty still being around he was still in the newbie role and still got scolded by her and Brock if he made stupid mistakes.

In AG he was a more experienced trainer, and his Pokemon team that gen reflects that. No more was Ash battling with cute unevolved Pokemon, his entire team in AG reached their final forms aside from Corphish who was awesome anyway. Also thanks to May being debuted, Ash was pushed out of the newbie role and got to act like a mentor to her.

In D/P, he is again more experienced, on an almost equal role with Dawn, but Dawn doesn't seem to ask him for advice as much as she does from her rivals.

In general Ash's progression is perfectly natural. Its the characters that don't progress (hello: Brock), that make Ash's development more noticeable.

I thought he was always awesome....
even though i admit the show seemed a little too focused on him for my taste....you have to remember it is a Pokemon Journey.

Like most ppl said, he was a newbie in season 1, and so yea he made mistakes. but i think ppl get the wrong impression when Misty and Brock scold him....its not like Ash didnt argue with them.....they were newbies at the time too, so I consider them three learning together during their seasons 1-5. Of course, its natural no one's gonna be mature when they first start, just look at that one Johto starter with the chikorita (cant think of her name right now).....With Misty, Brock, and Ash all starting their journeys and learning together, its obvious that they all matured as the show went on.

Which is the reason why Ash, along with Brock, matured enough to become "mentors" in the advanced season and going even further in D&P. To me, this is the most central and critical reason why May and Dawn were not so dense like Ash was when he first started. They both had experienced companions.

So in conclusion, I dont think Ash is too mature. In fact time to time, you still see his stubborness.....which is a good thing, just to remind us of his inside personality, and that growing hasnt taken over his character. I think its natural and should be that way, that Ash is more mature now. Which is the reason why I would like to see Misty return....so they can witness each other's own growth in maturity since they parted....

I think Ash's maturity is fine the way it is. For one thing, he is different than what he was the first season. I remember I hated him and he makes all those stupid mistakes, and was in your face until he was at sometimes knocked downs several pegs of what happened when he lost a major fight.

I like though how he developed into like a natural leadership like. As he able to help anyone who in need. And he does not rely as much from Brock when it comes to battling since he exceeds him and some others.

The one I been noticing this season that he has like a small crush with Zoey, even though majority hates her, but its cute and funny because he acts funny around her. And then what Dawn is going through, Ash knows the feeling of defeat since he senses her of whats going on.

I like Ash a lot better now. He was good for being an idiot back then, but it would've eventually grown stale, just how jackass!Gary would have annoyed me if it continued much longer than it had.

I hate when people complain about there being little-to-no character development in Pokemon, and then, when there is development, they complain about the development.

He'll always have his moments, though.

Actually, I do quite miss his old, more immature personality. It just seemed to fit him more, and I don't mean that in a bad way. He was a cute lil kid, naive at times, but that made him all the more realistic. It probably is good that they've matured him some, but I can't help but love the original Ash.

I do agree with what Scott85 said though.

I think he's a LOT better in the newer seasons. I think Ash was a complete idiot in the older ones. Sure, it was funny in a way... but for the main character? Just no. Personally, I'd rather watch a nice, experienced Trainer who loves his Pokemon and knows what he's doing than some ten-year-old kid who thinks pitting Caterpie against Pidgeotto is a good idea.

I couldn't have explained it in a better way than this :). Totally agree with you.

I like Ash at the start of the anime because he makes the show so much funnier, being the main character and all, but when he matured he just doesn't do stupid things that I can laugh about. I miss the old Ash. :(

I want D/p shows ash doing some stupid thing for fun like another RACE LIKE THE RAPIDASH ONE,

Yes! He's too mature now. Now of course I don't want Ash to be a complete idiot but when he acts like oh that's easy and then he ends up getting humiliated or something, that's what made it funny. Like in Hocus Pokemon when Misty asked Ash how he planned to get the stun spore and Ash is just like "That's easy, I'm just gonna walk up to it!" That's what made it funny.
