Looking back at their first match, it was pretty interesting to see Ash’s calm and cool self aside from his “I’m going to teach you a lesson” sort of attitude. I’m comparing the way he faced Palmer against the way he battled against Paul considering that this is his first real challenging battle since the one with the full battle.

I’m impressed that Ash considered many factors when choosing an opponent to battle Rhyperior. He actually thought about the other Sinnoh leaders that he faced! That shows that the little boy may finally be maturing as he is learning from past experiences/failures to help him improve (I just hope that at the beginning of the new series he doesn’t go back to being a “rookie”) I think he made the right choice in picking Grotle since both Pokemon are slow but are the tanks of a trainer’s team due to their high defense (but rather lacking in Special Defense).

The battle itself was pretty descent; Rock Wrecker was an awesome move to say the least. It’s cool how Rhyperior’s hands shot out the tiny rocks to form one huge boulder. I wonder how a Geodude would look shooting out of its hands…

Barry’s voice when talking about how Ash really doesn’t stand a chance (for example the tone of his voice when talking about how Grotle healed itself, but was still trapped in the Sandstorm) shows that he isn’t a total goof and has a extreme amount of faith in his dad as Tower Tycoon. I can see Barry as a threat to Ash if he didn’t bring his goofy self into battle. I think that he will show us that side against Paul considering if he doesn’t he will get his butt served to him on a platter.

Without the power-up, it is pretty obvious that Ash had little to no chance of winning that battle. I also like Rock Polish finally having its debut to spice things up a bit. Also, the writers did their justice by having the Grotle’s power-up being a new move for Dawn in her next contest. In a way, it was similar to the combos like Flame Ice/Ice Chandler where a trainer has their own Pokemon increase their power by utilizes an attack. It’s very similar to how Ash took Dawn’s spin move to develop the Counter Shield. The final power struggle showed us a glimpse of Ash’s whole “The best defense is a good offense” theory of battle. I was disappointed that he just had Grotle push back Rhyperior instead of using a powered up Razor Leaf. With its glowing bushes on its back, I think that Razor Leaf would probably resemble Magical Leaf or a barrage of Razor Leaves that had the same coloration as Energy Balls (that would look very cool by the way!) I think Energy Ball would become some sort of energy laser due to its increased power. Just look at how Rock Climb literally created a huge mountain. Torterra did the same in the final gym battle, but it’s much more powerful than a Grotle.

The way Rock Wrecker literally smashed Grotle on the head and collapsed the entire Rock Climb mountain, I would say that Rhyperior finally met its match. I know that after that move it had to recharge, but just look at how it was sitting on the ground and panting heavily.

Aside from the second half of the battle (when the power up started) my favorite part was when he had Grotle use Synthesis and his timing was on cue! Rhyperior’s Rock Wrecker left in recharge position, and Ash took full advantage of that. Grotle used its healing technique and then used Razor Leaf to slice the Sandstorm into nothing that was pretty interesting. Reggie’s words held true during the full battle; he talked about how you should consider your opponent’s condition before using a healing move (like Rest of Recover) since it leaves you completely vulnerable to take even more damage. This is the Ash that can win major battles when he uses his head and not his anger to prove someone wrong.

Now, there is debate over whether or not Ash will challenge the Sinnoh BF. In all honesty, it would not surprise me if they just went from the Sinnoh League (and possibly to the Elite 4 and Champion) to the new series. Consider this; Palmer said that no one has ever been able to defeat Rhyperior at the Battle Tower as all foes have been unable to overpower this Pokemon. I mean look at the stats of this powerhouse; it has incredibly high defensive powers, Solid Rock ability cuts down super-effective moves since it is a Rock/Ground type there are a lot of moves that are cut down by half, Rock Polish increases its speed that can be a crutch to cover its low speed handicap and it can also catch opponents off guard, Rock Wrecker is the most powerful rock type move and Sandstorm causes repeated damage, also consider that those are probably not its own moves. I mean Ash nearly defeated the unbeatable Pokemon with a second stage Pokemon and now that it has evolved and learned Leaf Storm I think it’s safe to say that Ash could beat Palmer in a rematch. Pikachu defeated 2 Milotics in the past and its past along with a Dragonite (thought one must remember that 3 of Ash’s other Pokemon helped out). Since he is the head of the BF and Ash nearly defeated him on his first try I think that they may just skip over the Sinnoh BF arc.

I think the strongest hint of the writers skipping over the BF
is the trophy that Ash won at the festival. In the games, if a player wins at the tower then they receive the Bronze Trophy. The one that Ash received looked very similar to it. So, to me this is a strong hint at there being no Sinnoh BF. Do you agree?

Do we really even have time fer a rematch? It would be cool, but Sinnoh is ending very soon.

The whole Palmer episode was the one thing that got me hoping and thinking that we would see a Battle Frontier arc again. BUT NOOOOOO!!!!! Becuase the writers are lame like that.

I would like it, but as others have said, there's not really a lot of time left in Sinnoh

I thought they would, since I thought that Sinnoh would have went on for 5 years while Game Freak decided to wait for the next Nintendo Portable to come out, and use that year for the anime to have a BF arc, even if it took place in either Johto or Sinnoh. Instead, I guess GameFreak and Nintendo wanted Gen V to be playable on the current DS system. I thought they would do that after the league, build up time, and give Dawn a 2nd GF to partake in so she doesn't become Brock the 2nd in not doing anything.
