Well we all know that the Sinnoh league is right around the corner and the two primary rivals from the DP series (Ash and Paul) are going to duke it out in their final battle at the league. There has been talk of Ash fighting a legendary Pokemon at the league and other rumors about him and Paul’s battle not taking place in the finals. Now I don’t know what is fact and what is rumor, but I do know based on my own theories that the two will meet somewhere in battle during the tournament.
Over the next few days or the next couple of weeks I am going to make posts based on the battles the two have had from their first battle at Rowan’s lab to their first full battle. Taking apart the battles from the pokemon they used, their attitudes and their techniques/strategies. This is a good way of seeing how the two rivals have grown in their own way and may help us make a good guess as to how they will square off at the league. Of course thoughts by other users greatly appreciated.
I’ll include a poll of who you think put on the better performance during the matches; not really the person that won the match had the better tactics not all matches are based on that. The poll decisions will be based on who you think had the better strategies or who handled themselves better in battle like their emotions and such (though most think that the winner was the one who had the better attack plan).
Let’s get started!
Battle 1: Paul-Starly, Chimchar, Elekid/Ash-Starly, Aipom, Pikachu
Before the match even started Paul had Ash’s number. He thought that Ash was actually a rookie trainer because he only had two Pokemon on hand, and didn’t know things like using his Pokedex to scan his newly caught Pokemon. Paul caught a Starly that knew Aerial Ace so that being said it either learned it from its father Starly when it was born, it could have had a past trainer that released it or it was at level 25 (though the series has proven that moves are learned in different ways from the game such as Pikachu learning Volt Tackle).
He then concluded that Pikachu was able to use Volt Tackle so he and his Elekid had a strategy to counter against it. He even remarked on how he talks like a little kid because of what he said to Dawn about watching her first Pokemon battle while holding on to her hat. This made Ash start the battle on the wrong foot because he was angered, but Paul was simply beaming with confidence.
The first round was Starly vs Starly, but as mentioned before it can be assumed without a shadow of a doubt that Paul’s Starly was at a much higher level. Ash starts off with a Quick Attack that hits the mark, but Paul’s Starly barely took any damage as mentioned by Rowan who also assumed that Paul was testing out the strength of Ash’s Starly. Paul then counters with Aerial Ace that did a lot of damage. Ash calls for Wing Attack but proves useless against the defenses of Double Team. Paul calls for a final Aerial Ace from behind and Ash calls for it to watch out from behind but it is too late. Ash’s Starly is defeated in two hits. He then recalls it and tells it that it was a battle well fought. Paul talks about how Ash tries to cover his weak attacks by pushing his Pokemon when dealing with a more powerful opponent and that is a pathetic strategy. He recalls his Starly and asked if that was all it had. That being said it is safe to assume that Ash’s Starly was at a level around 21 since it knew Whirlwind. So, it would make sense that Paul’s Starly would not be able to beat it with just one Aerial Ace.
Round 2 was Chimchar vs Aipom, after checking his Pokedex, Paul taunts Ash by making fun of him for not knowing much on Chimchar. Once again angered Ash calls for Swift but it is countered by Ember. Focus Punch is the next move by Aipom, but Chimchar intercepts with Flame Wheel countering the move because if it is attacked before it is completed the Focus Punch will fail. Paul then taunts Ash again for using such poor judgment. Ash calls out for Double Team, Aipom smiles with a confident snicker. Its copies are then shot down by Ember and it is attacked by Chimchar’s Scratch. Ash once again orders Focus Punch, and Paul thinks that things will go the same as he calls for another Flame Wheel. Much to Paul’s confusion, Ash calls for Aipom to just sit there. He then tells it to jump in order to dodge Flame Wheel and to bring down the attack on the unguarded Chimchar. It finishes the Chimp with one Focus Punch. This should be expected since it has a naturally low Defense and Focus Punch is one of the most powerful Fight type moves. Ash calls it back and thanks it for the battle, but Paul irritated calls back Chimchar calling it useless.
The final match is Elekid vs Pikachu. Paul then asks if it was the one with Volt Tackle and Ash confirms it with “Yeah so what?” and Paul says “So, nothing!” Once again Ash is ticked a starts with a Thunderbolt that barely fazed Elekid. Paul calls for a Thunder that looked like it did a bit of damage, but this was only because it absorbed Thunderbolt to increase to power of Thunder. Paul again taunts Ash by telling him of his strategy of using his opponent’s attacks to increase to power of his own moves. Calling out another attack out of anger he orders Volt Tackle, but thanks to Protect, Pikachu is the one that takes the damage (which should not be possible because since Elekid took zero damage there was no recoil for Pikachu to suffer). Paul then tells Ash to quit the match, but he calls for Iron Tail. It is countered with Brick Break (since it is a fighting type move it should weaken the steel type attack). Paul then mentions that since Pikachu is all turned around it is unable to defend itself while Elekid still has one arm free. This makes Ash briefly panic as Paul calls for a Thunderpunch. Ash then tells him that Iron Tail is still in the game as Pikachu knocks away the Thunderpunch and lands a successful Iron Tail. Paul isn’t about to give in as he calls for a final Brick Break that knocks Pikachu to the ground. Both Pokemon struggle to their feet as they try their best to continue standing, and Pikachu is the first to fall just a couple of seconds before Elekid.
It should be noted that Elekid was knocked out by one attack; Iron Tail. I wouldn’t count that Thunderbolt for doing little if any damage at all because Elekid received the attack like it was a battery to absorb the electric power. Also it like all Electric types have a low defense and it is probably because Pikachu is at a much higher level than Elekid that it was able to take it out with one hit.
Brock calls the match a tie while Ash refuses because his side fell first, but Paul doesn’t mind because it was called as a tie and both Pokemon were clearly unable to continue. He then calls back Elekid silently, which is a surprise because his other two Pokemon were scolded when he recalled them. He then releases Starly into the wild much to Ash’s confusion. Paul remarks on how there are many Starly that strong and he will just grab another one that is stronger much to Ash’s anger. He thanks Rowan and walks off then Ash calls out for another battle, but Paul continues to walk into the distance. He holds Pikachu in his arms with fire in his eyes…
