This battle is going to be broken up into two parts because the first time was interrupted by TR. The battle was concluded at the end of the episode so we’ll start with part 1.
Battle 2: Ash-Turtwig/Paul-Chimchar
Once again before the battle starts Paul has Ash’s ego on the ropes. He first appears out of nowhere while catching Ash in another one of his less than shining moments (his new Turtwig biting on to his head while Ash is flailing around playfully like an idiot), and he calls him pathetic with a grin on his face.
After the theme song and title card are finished we see Ash in some kind of braced pose as he stares down his newest rival. Both talk about how they are on their way to Oreburg to battle the gym leader. Paul comments on Turtwig being weak and pathetic and Ash challenges him to a battle (out of anger) to prove him wrong. Paul wants to so he can settle the unfinished business from their first match (which was a tie) and that left a “bad taste” in his mouth (I imagine it’s the same feeling Gary felt when he and Ash “tied” while fishing and caught the old Pokeball and it was a tie to Ash but to Gary tying with him was no better than losing that’s probably the same feeling Paul felt after their first match).
Brock wants to referee the match, but Paul calls out that it is unnecessary because the match will have an obvious winner (him of course). Ash then gets even more angrier than before.
The match is Chimchar vs Turtwig, an obvious advantage to Paul based on types. Ash calls out for a Tackle that is easily evaded and countered by a head on Scratch. This match is pretty much Chimchar blasting Turtwig with a barrage of Scratch and Ember attack. Turtwig was almost finished with a Flame Wheel, but it was healed by Synthesis (not completely because Paul called out for a finishing Flame Wheel, but that was when TR interfered and the match was cancelled).
The battle was not going Ash’s way because he and Turtwig were out of sync. No matter what attack was launched at it, Turtwig refused to dodge it and was badly damaged as a result. Ash was pretty much confused the entire battle because he did not know why his Pokemon refused to dodge. Even when he called for an attack Tackle or Razor Leaf, it was just easily dodged and then countered by Chimchar.
So, this is the result of the round 1 of their second battle; who do you think had the upper hand?
