So basically here are 3 questions in one poll about Satoshi/Ash as I didn't want to make numerous polls on the same subject.

The poll has multiple choices so basically all you need to do is click on the option that is your answer E.g. You pick from 1-a, 1-b or 1-c and then 2-a, 2-b or 2-c etc etc

I am really curious as to how this goes so here we are...

Question 1:

Which name do you use when referring to him?

A) Satoshi
B) Ash
c) Either or depending on discussion or version of show

Question 2:

Which name is your favourite?

A) Ash
B) Satoshi

Question 3:

Which perspective do you prefer of the character?

A) English dubbed version of Ash
B) Japanese Satoshi
C) Both depending on the version of the show I'm watching

I think it is pretty obvious that the name 'Ash Ketchum' is more widely known and most often used outside of Japan due to the vast popularity and marketing of the 'American version' of Pokemon but that doesn't rule out all those of us who watch the original Pocket Monsters and refer to him as Satoshi so this is why I am asking my questions.

I personally refer to him as Ash and Satoshi. If I am talking about Pokemon I use the name 'Ash' but if I am talking about Pocket Monsters, I use the name 'Satoshi'. Simple answer huh ^-^

As for which name I prefer, I personally do prefer the name 'Ash' over 'Satoshi' as it is just really cute!

As for character version, I like the English version Ash just as much as original Satoshi. Really my answer to any of these questions depends on the version of the show I am watching so what about you guys?

Um, what actually is the translation of 'Satoshi'? Is it actually 'Ash' or is that a 4Kids name?

I don't know what Satoshi means, but I don't think it matters, considering they only picked that name because the creator of Pokemon is Satoshi Tajiri.

That said, I prefer the name Ash because it makes him sound like less of a Mary Sue. Granted, he still *is* one, but he doesn't *sound* like one.

Huh?

How is Ash a Mary Sue?

LOL. I always thought Mary Sue's had to be girls (since I don't write fanfiction or anything, I had no idea Mary Sue's could be guys). ^^;

I mean, Ash does represent the typical, hero-archetype which is seen in many shows. But still, I don't see how that alone makes him a Mary Sue.

Anyway, my answer for all the 3 questions was, of course Ash.

I always refer to him as Ash, even if I'm talking about the Japanese version. XD

I LOVE the name Ash! And personally, I think that fits him much better than the name "Satoshi" does. ^_^

And finally, as for the last question, I prefer the perspective of Ash over Satoshi's personality.

Generally, I've heard that in the Japanese version, Satoshi acts very differently from the way Ash is portrayed in the dub. I mean, I've heard that Satoshi isn't usually portrayed as being "kind" or "nice" to everyone, which is what Ash's personality is like in the dub version. And I've also heard other things about Satoshi as well. So yeah, definitely Ash!! :-D

Huh?

How is Ash a Mary Sue?

I think it's because Mr. Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon, named the main character of Pokemon "Satoshi" (which is also his name...). But I'm not sure, it's just a speculation :p

Which name do you use when referring to him?

I know him as Ash so I call him "Ash". But it also depends on the discussion of the show.

Which name is your favourite?

I voted Satoshi, but I like either one.

Which perspective do you prefer of the character?

It depends more on the version of the show. But, I think I like an older, mature and smarter Ash/Satoshi better. :x I'm not hugely interested on younger men.

1. which do you say?
Satoshi
2. Which is better?
Satoshi
3. What Aspect?
Japanese Satoshi

So in conclusion, sorry Blackjack Palazzo, but...
I was grew up with the japanese version (Actually first on the video games, then anime, then manga) and when I saw the american version for the first time I was shocked and confused

So I stick with good old Japanese! HOOHA!

Eh, I actually make a point to use the dub names over the original names just because of resentment issues towards other fans (namely the awful fanfic writers that butcher the characters for their own fantasies- they almost always insist on using the original names). That and I grew up with them being Ash/Brock/Misty/etc and I'm cool with going by those names.

When it comes to Pokemon, I stick to the dub names. Mainly because most of the names on the show are based off puns (as are the Japanese names) or inside jokes, and since I don't know a lick of Japanese, the power of said puns and inside jokes with the Japanese names don't really have the kind of power the dub ones do for me. Same can be said for the names of the Pokemon themselves.

And yeah, I kind of have issues with main characters who share the name of the creator and are designed to become be best [insert profession/hobby here] in the world. Though Ash actually isn't all that bad, considering it's been 500 episodes and he still hasn't won a regional championship yet. That's a lot better than Beyblade's Takao Kinomiya (based on creator Takao Aoki) who won world championships every goddamn season even when other characters had better causes, and never suffered the kind of humiliating defeats his friends did... while Ash has been made a fool of quite often in his series.

I just refer him more times as Ash since I was mainly brought more of his english name than the Japanese name. I use Satoshi incase I have to find in a search with his dub name since god know how many Satoshis are out there. And also, Ash is not a hard name to remember or spell since it takes less energy to write his name, so yay for laziness!!!!

I prefer Japanese Ash voice more than the dub even though the dub is not bad, but the Japanese version sounds more believable when it comes down who plays it best.

I'm not sure if you knew this, Amazed, but Veronica actually based her Ash voice on Rica's Satoshi voice. That's how she got some of the inspiration for Ash's voice in the dub. ^^

Question 1:

1. Which name do you use when referring to him?

I use the name Ash since it's what I grew up with, it's what I'm more used too.

2. Which name is your favourite?

I actually like Ash as a name in general. I'm not sure why but I think it's a nice name. Though Satoshi does make more sense when pikachu "says" his name.

3. Which perspective do you prefer of the character?

I said both, I have no reason to prefer one over the other and I do enjoy both.

And you do have a point Shinneth. While Satoshi is named after the creator, the character himself isn't 100% perfect and that would make him more likable and help to be seen as a separate entity from the creator.

Which name do you use when referring to him?

A) Satoshi
B) Ash

A) English dubbed version of Ash

... =D

I think of him more as Ash since that's who I've known him as since the show started.

I like Ash better. Well, I like any english name over a japanese name.

I'm not sure if you knew this, Amazed, but Veronica actually based her Ash voice on Rica's Satoshi voice. That's how she got some of the inspiration for Ash's voice in the dub. ^^

I heard of that, the cries that Rica did which Veronica got it from, especially saying Pikachu when its in peril. I really admire Veronica when she had that inspiration and that she made it to her own thing. I tend to like when people do that to a voice and than rather copied it. She had the uniqueness to his voice, but it was tough call if I would of taken the time to write this, but everyone seemed to get inspiration from other people's works, which is not a bad thing, but something to look back upon.

I chose Ash for all three! I love how Ash is portrayed in the dub! Especially, from the way Veronica portrayed him. Her portaryal is what made me love Ash so much!

I like Satoshi, but if I had to choose, I would definitely pick Ash!

Which name do you use when referring to him?
Ash because that's what I grew up with.

Question 2:

Which name is your favourite?
Ash since I grew up with it am use to it more than the japanese one.

Question 3:

Which perspective do you prefer of the character?
Japanese Satoshi because I really love his personality alot more. Alot more that both Ash perspectives from 4kids and PUSA.

Q1: Which do I use to refer to him?

A: Either one, depending on the series (although I've never had to refer to him as Satoshi, but if I find myself talking about the Japanese version, I'll use that name)

Q2: Which name do I like better?

A: Ash, because its my cat's name (my cat's actually female, and I didn't even name it)

Q3: Which character do I agree with more?

A: Ash because I've never even seen the Japanese show other than the banned Porygon episode.

I chose Satoshi for all questions. I like the name Ash, but I like Satoshi more. And why not use the name he was given? Like you made a character and people started to call it something else than you named it. And Satsohi is named after the creator of Pocket Monsters, just as Shigeru is named after Shigeru Miyamoto. That way, you'll also know who made the video games. I know a lot of people who doesn't know who Satoshi Tajiri is and still they like PM very much.
