I was wondering, what were the special circumstances? I thought the only reason Ash got Pikachu instead of a normal starter was because he was the fourth trainer to see oak that day and the 3 starters were already taken.

Unless, it was becuse Oak and Dellia were in a relationship, and both wanted Ash to start his journey so Oak needed to give him a Pokemon, but obviously the 3 starters at that time were allready taken so had to give him what was left.

Wierd how the mayors son called the three starters lame but said he would take a Pikachu, I find Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard are all cooler than Raichu is.

It ultimately boils down to Pikachu being the mascot of the entire Pokémon franchise. Having the anime version of the main character choose one of the standard starters would just cause the one starter to be over-showcased while the other two would be pretty much ignored. (Although it's kinda already happened with Charizard, and Ash now automatically ends up with the grass starter of each generation now).

Clefairy were main Pokémon in first ever published Pokémon manga if I am not mistaken.
I heard somewhere, that in Japan, they do some sort of market research amongst Pokémon videogames players in Japan before the anime were writen and Pikachu won it as most adorable Pokémon. But it is long time I heard this and I am not sure about the source and its credibility.

I knew that if Ash got a normal starter, it would take the spotlight away from the other two, so it needed to be something else, and Pikachu was chosen. But Oak said it was under special circumstances that Ash got Pikachu. I knew the writers had it that Ash woke up late, and was the last of 4 people to choose, but the way Oak said it was special in Journey to the Start line it seemed like anyone else would have been sent home, told to come back when the next three were ready.

See Movie 4.

I believe he was reffering to the Basics (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle), not their Stage-2 forms...

Ever watch the first episode? If not, go out and buy the DVD. XP

But wasn't Ash originally destined to have a Clefairy instead of Pikachu? I'm sure I read about that somewhere.

Plus, Pikachu became the mascot of the franchise after the anime, not before, IIRC.

Wasn't there a contest held in Japan or something to determine the mascot and/or what pokemon you would start with that wasn't Bulba/Char/Squirt, and Pikachu won? I think that was it. I can't remember much really, I read it years ago online.

I've seen the first episode. Ash went in, Asked about all three of the starters to find that they are gone, then says he needs a Pokemon to start his journey, so Oak gave him a Pikachu instead of a normal starter as he didn't have any normal starters left.

That was pretty shitty scheduling if they planned on 4 new trainers with only 3 starters.

Not if you count Movie 4 as canon. Ookido-hakase would've been aware of what Satoshi's starting Pokemon was supposed to be and thus had it ready.

I think it was a retcon. Ash was originally fourth out of three, but it has since been retconned later on to say that Pikachu was specifically "reserved" for Ash for reasons yet unknown (after all, there are two different versions of Ash getting his first Pokémon - the original version and the version where he is not in his sleepwear...)

After all, in the original version, it seems that Ash had just met Gary and was not familiar with him, but in later episodes they were said to be well-versed with each other.

There is one problem with this. In original, Yukinari thinks the whole adventure with Satoshi were just a dream. And honestly, no matter how interesting any dream is, you hardly will remember it for 40 years. And even if so, you will not think about it so much, that once day you say: "Oh wow, this Ketchum boy now looks like the boy from my 40 year old dream. Can the dream be true? Give him Pikachu and lets see what happend."

I wouldn't be keen to see Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle as the official Pokemon mascot >_>

He may have thought it was a dream, but he's bound to have realised it was real when he looked through his sketchbook. Remember how he sketched Celebi and Pikachu together when he was with Ash?

That was a fault by Oak, only having three starters ready when he had arranged 4 trainers to start that day.
Elm seemed more organised, in Don't touch that Dile, he seemed to allready know who was getting the starers, he knew the female trainer was getting the Totodile and the male was taking Cyndaquale. Maybe he was more for haveing people say whichj starter they would take before taking it, so he could get them ready, rather waiting for a decision when they get there.

the male was taking Cyndaquale.

He never mentioned Jimmy. Only Marina.

My biggest question is, Was it Casey who took the Chikorita, or Jackson? I supose it's Possible Elm had two Chikorita, and Casey took the first one, because Judging by the one seen in the opening of LOT (Correct me if it was a dub-only scene), it shows Jimmy, Marina and Jackson getting their starter pokemon at the same time.
