In the anime, Ash sends all of his extras to Professor Oak. Wouldn't it make more sense to send them to the Professor of the region he is currently at? I'm surprised Prof. Oak isn't going insane with all of the Pokemon Ash sends him.

I think that they only did that in BW because of how they handled the fifth generation. They made a big deal about how you could only find new Pokemon until the post-storyline for B/W and that Unova was so far away from all of the other regions. The anime followed that with Ash, Pikachu and Team Rocket being the only returning characters and they didn't show any non-Unova related Pokemon, aside from Pikachu and Meowth, until season two. I still think that the main reason Ash caught so many Pokemon during BW was because they wanted to give him a decent amount of reserve Pokemon to use for the Unova League without having to use any of his older Pokemon. Sending Ash's Unova Pokemon to Professor Juniper instead of Professor Oak continued with keeping the focus on just the Unova region and avoiding his other Pokemon.

They didn't really do this in XY since Ash didn't capture as many Pokemon and X/Y didn't try to isolate itself from the other regions/generations.

How does regional professors work on anime? Do everyone in Kanto go to Pallet Town to receive their starter pokemon?

Given Gary caught over 200 in just 65 episodes, Ash is doing nothing. Watch Showdown at Poke-Corral to see just how many are there. Ash is a drop in the bucket, and at least he gives interesting Pokemon.

Well, Ash did that in Unova. Why not other regions? Also, what about when Ash leaves that region and goes to the next one?

That seems to be the case.

That was shown to not be the case in the Advanced series. Nurse Joy can give starter Pokemon out, and you can also start with non starters.

Yeah, I remember that episode in AG where Nurse Joy was in charge of giving out starter Pokemon to new trainers too. We have seen plenty of trainers in the anime who didn't start off their journeys with a starter Pokemon. Characters may just start their journey with a Pokemon that someone gave them or they really like if they live too far away from the town where the regional professor lives at. It would be a lot to expect everyone in Kanto to go to Pallet Town to start off their journeys if they live at the other side of the region.

Kanto through Sinnoh are treated as close regions, so it made sense for Ash to send his Pokémon there. It also meant Oak still had a relevant role as a recurring character. Unova is geographically isolated from the previous regions, Best Wishes followed suit both in storytelling and picking its returning characters, so they made Juniper the one in charge of keeping the Pokémon, probably to minimize Oak's role and avoid showing Ash's older ones. I'm sure they would've done the same in Kalos had Ash caught enough Pokémon. The same would probably go for Alola.

I think it is just because Ash and Oak know each other very well and that's normally how favours work irl. You have a better chance of someone doing a favour if they know you well. Also, because Oak's lab is massive, like he has a forest, a lake - so many different things you see in different anime episodes. A TARDIS? thinking intensifies
