Ash's Grottle - Sap Sipper ability?

While watching some old episodes i came across one of the episodes where Ash's Grottle "ate" an energy ball to become charged.

This does sound a lot like the 5th generation new ability "Sap Sipper".
Do you think Ash's grottle had the sap sipper ability or should this tactic be placed in the same category as the "Thunder armor" from Pikachu and Swellow.

On a sidenote: i'd love to see Sap sipper as a dreamworld ability for Grottle/Torterra.
 
I don't think so since Ash's Grotle can't legally have that ability. Plus, that ability didn't even exist back in DP.

True, the ability didn't exist in 4th gen and grottle doesn't have that ability legally (DW is sturdy).
Having said that, the effect sounds a lot like Sap Sipper. (Crosses fingers for event Turtwig with sap sipper).
