I made this post in another thread, and it got me thinking about Ash's past:

Well, I've always thought, or wanted to think, that the reason Ash was crying in one of the Hoenn openings (Pokemon Symphonic Medly, I think) was because of the fact that Ash has some kind of sad, mysterious past that we know nothing about yet. Because, in that one scene, it really did seem like he was in deep thought about something, which also made him very sad as well.

I mean, it's just the fact that the writers haven't revealed much of anything about Ash's past to us, and that's always made me wonder about his basic history and stuff. It's kind of a shame that we don't know about his background or anything, considering that he is the main character, and there have been many episodes centering on him. And yet, we still haven't found out anything about him relating to that subject. Anyway, I think we should at least know some things, at the very least. And in my opinion, I would really like it if the writers did reveal something about Ash's past or history soon.

So, does anyone have a theory about Ash's past/history?

Also what, if anything, do you guys think happened in Ash's life prior to the first episode?

Like, for example, do you think any kind of important events might have happened to him, from the time he was about age 5 up until the day he turned 10?

I am just wondering this out of curiosity.

Of course, I would really love it if somehow, someway, the writers were to give us some information about Ash's past. It would just be very interesting, because when you think about it, we don't know very much about Ash's life before-episode-one. And it just seems like, to me, there has to have been at least one or maybe a few important events that could've happened in his past.

Oh, and just so everyone knows, when I talk about Ash's past, I'm not just talking about Ash's father, but rather, I'm talking about the basic history of Ash which we know nothing about yet (and that basic history may or may not include Ash's father, depending on how you look at that whole issue, which I'm not planning to discuss in this thread - however it's okay if the subject does come up since this is a thread about Ash and his past).

EDIT: I was going to add a little poll to this, but I forgot to do that when I made the thread. ;_;

We know from Ash's and Delia's personality that nothing earth-shattering happened in their past.

Ash said he used to climb trees in Pallet Town all the time, he had a childhood friendship with Gary, and he knew that Molly girl from Movie 3. And...he wanted to become a trainer more than anything.

He just had the life of a normal kid, I don't think anything important happened.

We don't know anything about Judai Yuki's past life, we don't know much about Luffy's past life.

Alot of main Shonen characters don't get backstories.

Yeah, Scott85, what you mentioned is basically the gist of what we know so far about Ash's past.

And I agree with you, Habunake. What you said is definitely true.

However, the main reason I believe something might've happened in Ash's past is mainly because of the fact that he wants to become a Pokemon Master.

Whenever I hear that term in the anime, I always ask myself these two questions:

1. What exactly is a Pokemon Master? (obviously)

2. What, if anything, might've happened in Ash's past to make him want to become a Pokemon Master? (come on, there has to be a reason for that, right?)

Also, I think that when and if we do finally get an answer to the big, number one question, then we may also get an answer to the second question as well. Or, come to think of it, the reverse could happen too. Because, if the writers wanted to, they could have some of Ash's past revealed, and then after that, reveal the answer to the big question (and actually, that answer is what a lot of people have been waiting for all this time).

Although, this could just be me, thinking too much about Ash, like I always do. LOL. XD

Mainly, I think I'm probably having wishful thinking......

But I just really wish they would reveal something in the anime regarding Ash's past or something. Because in my opinion, it would be so great to see that happen, and see Ash get an actual history for once. ^^

The Animé (English Dub or otherwise) hasn't really established requirements for one to become a Pokémon Master. There USED to be a number of things that people thought to be requirements. We also can consider a number of things:

1.) Catching 'em all: This was proven to be false as Ash still actively pursues his dream without desire to catch EVERY Pokémon. This also is impossible because we've seen that tampering with Legendary Pokémon can cause catastrophic weather events.

2.) Winning One or Multiple League Competitions: This also applies to the notion that members of the Elite Four are Pokémon Masters. Tyson won the Evergrande Tournament and is definately not a 'Pokémon Master'. Members of the E4 have been referred to being Masters in the dub but this may be a mistake.

3. Misty described her dream as becoming a 'Water Pokémon Master'. This leads us to believe that a 'Pokémon Master' can be devined to types as well. A Master is likely someone who is a VERY experienced Trainer whom has one many competitions and has a large empathic relationship with the Pokémon around them.

Of the very limited knowledge we have about him, we know Ash's Father was a Pokémon Trainer. His dream was probably to become a Pokémon Master as well. Sons often follow in their Father's footsteps.

Ash has also been crazy about Pokémon the moment he became aware of them. He continually watched competitions on television and has tons of Pokémon merchandise in his room.

Yeah, that's the main fact I was trying to refer to in my last post.

Anyway, I really hope that sometime in the anime they will explain the full definition of a Pokemon Master to us (unless, of course, the definition is supposed to be implied, but that would just take the fun out of it).

That sounds like a very good definition of what a Pokemon Master should be, Eternal Eievui. And all of that makes sense too.

I completely agree with you, Eternal Eievui!! ^_^

And actually, I've always thought the same thing, that Ash's father wanted to become a Pokemon Master, which is also the reason why Ash wants to become one.

Although, in my opinion, I think there may be another reason as well, along with that one. But I'm not sure what that other reason could be or anything (then again, I'm probably thinking too much here and diving too deep into this subject).

It may be a little farfeched, but i have a no-proof thoery that when Ash was a baby his father and an older brother walked out on them because Delia did not want her son(s) becoming pokempnn trainers. But that's just my crazy imagination.

I think Ash does have a dad, but we don't see him, as he's not an important character...he could've already left for work long before Ash overslept on that fateful day.

Agreed that Ash's Father isn't an important character, but that still doesn't explain why we haven't seen him upon Ash's subsequent returns to Pallet Town.

This post is gonna be slightly off-topic...... ^^o

But, anyway, I just noticed something.

We have these two threads in the anime forum now:

- Ash's past

- May's future

LOL, now we seem to be making threads reffering to different parts of time. XD

*half expects to see a "someone's present" thread on there* XD

I think Ash is trying to follow in his father's footsteps as a trainer. I think his love for Pokémon bloomed when he was very young and played with Gary Oak at his grandfather's laboratory/Pokémon preserve. I base this on my daughter's utter fascination with animals of all sorts. Just picture Ash and Gary interacting with the Pokémon there, and watching as the older trainers got their starters and set off on their journeys.
