Well while I do love the recognition of the Japanese fandom, I fear this might go the way of Dragonball. But at least it's a co-op b/w the Japanese and Americans. :>

Astro Boy is a 2009 Japanese/American computer-animated 3-D film based on the highly successful Japanese franchise of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. It is being produced by Imagi Animation Studios,[3] the animation production company of TMNT and the upcoming Gatchaman. The studio announced the project in September 2006. It will be directed by David Bowers (Flushed Away) and produced by Maryann Garger[4] with Pilar Flynn as associate producer.[5] The film was originally to be directed by Colin Brady, who directed the 2006 animated film Everyone's Hero. It has been announced that Freddie Highmore will provide the voice for the character of Astro Boy in the movie.[6] A short trailer of the movie was shown in the North American Home Theater of PlayStation Home from December 28, 2008 to January 8, 2009.

I can see this being EPIC FAIL,
I hope it doesn't suck :/

How do you know that going to fail ?
Wait for it to be release before you judge it. I did see the trailer for the film, look impressive.

Thank GOD they finally put clothes on him. A little robot boy that wears nothing but a bikini and rockets and eats by having his pals shove bottles up his ass . . . shudder.

I used to watch the cartoon all the time. Although this movie will most likely go down the same road as Dragonball, it would still be nice to see astro boy in action. Then again, he might become a world famous icon if it succeeds. Only time will tell.

You know what's funny, I'm reading JapanAmerica and it turns out that this movie has been rumored to be on the works way back in 2006? XD

OH GOD NO. Dragonball was good enough, but Astro boy? no, no, no.

But on a positive note, I'm glad this is CGI not live action.

I think this will probably have the same fate as speed racer

Nicholas Cage is Dr. Tenma? I'm not even gonna watch this.

I didn't say "I know it's going to fail" I said "I can see this being EPIC Fail" as it, I see it not doing well.

nb4 "wait before you judge"; Silly Americans have NO business treading all over Japanese Icon Anime/Manga, I thought Speed Racer and DB Evolution had already taught us that.

Being that every time Americans (actually more on-Japanese but whatever) get involved in remaking a Japanese property it tend to not be all that great, I see no reason why my opinion is in just.

If an American is gonna remake a Japanese property they need to know the ORIGINAL JAPANESE (not the American Dub) version inside and out.

Yes.. this is important; it's serious. business

I likely will go and see it though; simply curb my inner Wapanese.

Speed Racer was actually a good movie. They kept the characters true to the original in both personality and even appearance. The story was unmistakably Speed Racer only brought up to film standards. They even did the visual affects to imitate the animation style of the series. My only complaint was the profanity was a bit excessive at times, but that's minor. I went with my mom who is a big Speed Racer fan and she loved it. It just had the misfortune of being squashed between two highly anticipated films at the beginning of the summer movie season.

If Astroboy goes the same way as Speed Racer (minus the unneeded profanity), I for one will be happy.

Well, having the actual Japanese version of the animes actually be avalible would certainly help. Even the newest one, you'd think they'd take advantage of the anime/manga boom, but nuuuuuu.
Jerks

Besides, icon or no, Astro Boy never really caught on in the US.

I dunno, after seeing this:

I'd have been more than happy with the US not handling Astro Boy.

Eesh, I wish Nathan Lane would have been left out of the movie. I love Nathan Lane.

This movie probably won't do that well, but it'll be cool to see I guess since I used to watch the cartoon. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

I really hope that this isn't as bad as it looks, I'm betting they won't even explain why Dr. Tenma made Astro Boy in the first place, but then, I don't think the guys behind the DragonBall film even read the original comics.

This site pretty much sums up my thoughts:

I want to make one thing clear -- I cannot even pretend to be unbiased about the CG, non-Japanese-made Astro Boy. If you think that I never gave the G.I. Joe movie a chance, I'm sure you're cackling now, but in my head, I tried to evaluate the Joe based on the evidence it presented to me. Astro Boy may end up being awesome, but I hate it and I don't think any facts are going to change my mind. I hate the addition of a generic spunky girl, even if she is voiced by Kristen Bell. I hate how they've seemed to neuter the character of Dr. Tenma, who built Astro to replace his dead son, then cast him away for not being real enough. I hate that Tenma's voiced by Nic Cage, one of the celebrities who should truly never be allowed to do voice acting.I hate the lack of adherence to Osamu Tezuka's character designs, as if he wasn't the Walt Disney of Japan. I hate that the movie looks like a lame Iron Giant rip-off of the military trying to capture Astro, as opposed to Tezuka's stories of using robots to condemn prejudice and racism. I hate it.

And yes, the irony that I'm totally prejudiced against this movie is not lost on me. But I don't care.
