Back when DP started...

...I never could have guessed how the things would turn out four years later. (well, nobody could) One of the events that surprised me the most were the following:

- Ash getting Paul's Chimchar only to evolve it fully into Infernape three seasons (years) later.
- First permanent trade. Granted, things didn't turn out very well but it was surprising nonetheless.
- Ash having two fully evolved starters in the team - that one really got me.
- Dawn making it to finals only to lose to her rival Zoey (a big disappointment for her fans since she never managed to beat her. Would be nice to see though.)
- Dawn's development and progress in DP.
- Cyndaquil evolving into Quilava. I always thought the thing would end up rotting in Oak's lab, but hey, look at that.

So, which events in DP took you by surprise?

Dawn losing to Zoey in the Grand Festival, she never beat her rival.

Slap in the face? (LOL we got a new Scott) not really, some of the Dawn fans like me actually liked that Dawn lost to Zoey and the character development that was shown to us after this lose

They did pull some shocking things.
I remember thinking at one point Ash would for sure get that Buziel.
Never would I imagined a trade between him and Dawn though, that suprised me.
 
Dawn making it to the finals of the GF. I was really sure that they were tricking us with the promise to meet in the finals.
 
Oh, this went by fast! Nostalgia hurts! T.T

I remember seeing Burmy without the cloack for the first time! XD
 
What suprised me was that Ash got a Gible and an Infernape. I though he would stick with Turtwig all the way like he did with Treecko.
 
- Ash giving away his Gliscor, and later surprisingly coming back.

- Ash catching a Gible (though he should have gotten Riolu).

- Ash trading his Aipom for Dawn's Buizel.

- May's return, plus Dawn beating her.

- Dawn catching a Togekiss AKA a Pokemon at its final evolution.

- Paul's Chimchar becoming Ash's and evolving all the way to Infernape.

- Dawn releasing Ambipom (Which I really dislike).

- Jessiebelle and Growlie returning after over ten years.

- Muk, Snorlax, Heracross, Bayleef, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Noctowl, Donphan, Corphish, Torkoal, Glalie, and Gliscor return for the Suzuran Conference.

- Cyndaquil evolving.
 
Until this year I thought Musashi would never even win her 5th ribbon, and look what happened - She got to the Grand Festival and also Top Four... Never saw that coming. ;_;
 
Heck, I didn't see Jessie winning a ribbon AT ALL D:

Paul in general was a huge shock for me. I didn't think that pokemon could handle such a large amount of jerkassery.

Pikachu being a boy.

Ash getting a gible and chimchar (total baaaww moment ;_;)

Conway becoming a league rival

Ambipom and Gliscor's farewells and how crappily they were executed (Gliscor's was a bit forgivable, but man...PING PONG?)
 
Let's see I never thought that these would happen:

-Sinnoh would take all 4 years
-Ash would get Paul's Chimchar
-Ash would get Gligar
-Ash getting a Gible
-Dawn having more of the spotlight than I was expecting
-Ash and Dawn trading two of their Pokemon and it being permanent
-Jessie being more competent in contests

This is just the tip of the Iceberg for me.
 
Biggest shocker for me is probably seeing Hunter J and her crew drown during the Galactic Finale. I figured that woman was going to be taken down before Sinnoh's end, but I never imagined it would go down like that. I still kinda miss her too.

Another one is the amount of rivals that got focus and were treated like actual threats. With how stuffed the Festival and League were, I was relieved to see no random filler person coming in to win it all. At least, not for the Festival anyway.

Ash's team was full of surprises too. Not one but two starters, and they reach their final evolution stage as well. Dropping Gliscor for a Gible, which isn't nearly as overpowered as we thought. Not to mention Quilava.

Agreed. The whole Aura thing seems to suit Ash. But it'd never happen since Pikachu is his signature pokemon. (What a waste)

-Ash getting a Dragon Pokemon (Gible)
