Think about it. In the anime, Barry never wins. I mean, for example, he lost against Ash at the first battle against him. And then, he lost in the ping pong competition. I think he also lost in that tower tycoon that man Palmer thingy.
Come on, man! Let Barry win just once!

Barry won at least three badges to our knowledge (prior to meeting Ash), fought against O in the semifinals of Ping Pong, and battled Ash in the finals of the Twinleaf Tournament.

Right...but then he lost at the semifinals didn't he? It would be better if he ACTUALLY won in the semifinals. As for the three badges, I think he's way behind compared to Ash now.

We do not know if Barry has collected more badges since then. We just have to wait and see when Barry and Ash meet again. At least we know Barry's Empoleon knows a new move.

Whaaat? Do you let YOUR rival win when you play the game? Maybe it's a reference to that or something. I'd rather restart my game than have my rival take a jab at me >(

Barry still has a chance. I just think that Ash has way more experience, and it might take a while for him to catch up. First, he needs to develop some sort of reasonable strategy, then we'll talk.

Don't get me wrong, I love Barry XD

The secondary rival usually loses a lot.

Same with Dawn and Kenny, and May with Harley.

The main rival, such as Gary/Paul/Drew/Zoey are usually not beaten until the final leagues, while the secondary rivals like Harley/Barry/Kenny get a lot of losses before the end.

This has been the standard in the series for a long time now. It's nothing new.
