I keep running into this today. It's still, officially, a rumor, but the sheer number of places going with this makes me feel confident in posting it.

Source.

According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros. has tapped Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan to have a sort of hands-on/godfather role in the upcoming Superman reboot to “ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground”.

There is doubt he would direct both the reboot and the next Batman flick, but knowing Nolan’s eye is being used on production gives me happy thoughts that touch all my nerdy parts just right. Nolan has handled superhero noir to 19th Century rival magicians, I think his voice of reason will be a grand addition to the Superman pot-luck that is slowly getting under way.

The article does like to mention the obvious differences between Superman and Batman, but notes that Superman in the comics has more of a darker edge in the past and how ”shortly after Dark Knight hit it big, fans assumed that Superman would be taken to the ‘dark’ side as well. That’s because Warner Bros mogul Jeff Robinov stressed post-Dark Knight that ‘we have to look at how to make these movies edgier’.”

Interesting idea, certainly. But if Singer proved anything, it's that big hits for one franchise don't mean squat for another. But maybe this means we can get a Superman/Batman movie. Assuming his Superman works.

Oh, dear God. An "edgy" Superman movie?

No. Just no. You can give the Man of Steel a more mature spin, I'll grant you that. But "edgy?" You just can't make Supes edgy and still retain the spirit of the character. It just won't work.

Of course, make it not mature enough, and Supes turns into Captain Marvel.

I seriously hope that they think twice about making Superman "edgy."

Oh great more reboots.

So long as Kevin Spacey returns as Lex, I'm happy. I hope I'm not WROOOONG!

This may not be popular opinion but Nolan is a crappy director. He surrounded himself with great actors so it wouldn't show as much but the performance by Christian Bale makes it painfully obvious because of the sheer lack luster job he did. The Dark Knight is not the best superhero movie ever there is just to many flaws that people ignore, I'd put Watchmen, Batman Returns, and Sin City above it and with Nolan attached to Superman I give up hope on this movie.

Wow, pretty much this. I had no idea other people felt this way.

Though, I gave up on Superman films ages ago. I like Supes, but he's kind of a boring character and trying to build a movie around him often ends in a lot of narm. And I think everyone knows about Supes' origins by now, retelling them again is a little... overdoing it, I think.

I'm hoping for a Justice League movie, actually. Superman is most interesting when he works with other heroes, and the Justice League has all the big names and some lesser-known major superheroes that could use the extra publicity.

In all honesty, I've always felt that the best Superman movie was the one from 1978, but then again I'm probably a tad biased. (I've never seen Superman Returns so I can't give an opinion on it.)

I really can't see Supes as edgy. For me it doesn't sound like it would work--he just strikes me as too "clean-cut". But maybe I'm wrong.

To be perfectly blunt I'd rather hear about a Wonder Woman film than Supes. Again, a bit biased here. ;-)

Jsut so long as it isn't Superman 3 or 4. Anything is better than those.

I'd love to see a Batman movie based on the No Man's Land series. Fat chance of that happening though. =/

Batman/Superman though, I could see.

Hey, no Man's Land...that brought Cassie Cain into DC-land IIRC...it'd be cool to see her in a live-action film.

I don't understand why they're "rebooting" Superman after just one recent movie though.

I'm not big on Superman but that plot I've read about the Superman-Prime who idolizes the real Superman, sounds like it'd make a pretty interesting scenario for a movie (the basic scenario, since I hear most people hate Superman Prime when he became a villain) that would be "darker, edgier, and more profound". Of course it wouldn't be really a reboot, but I think it'd probably be more Nolan's speed.

On the other hand, I hope if it's just a normal Superman movie they look into Superman's rouge gallery and use someone besides Lex.

Because it was largely considered a flop. They expected it to be as big as Batman Begins, and it wasn't. Plus, it wasn't very well received in most circles (as opposed to, again, Batman Begins, which was largely well-received).

And it doesn't hurt that rebooting is in in Hollywood. Worked for Hulk (though...after Hulk...a Gumby episode would have done better). There's hope it'll work for Daredevil and Spider-Man.

You CAN'T do Superman-Prime. You just can't. Too many jokes still linger over Superboy-Prime's "reality punch." Every fansite would be asking when he'd be punching through the movie.

I completely agree. He's FAR too overused as a Superman villain and needs to be set aside for AT LEAST one movie. Metallo, Bizarro, even Zod would be better choices. Just because they're DIFFERENT. And if they want edgy? Throw in Darkseid.

Legally Warner Bros is supposed to have a Superman film in devolpment by 2011 or they'll lose the rights to his character.

I also hope they don't try to make the film seem to "real" like what Chris Nolan did with the Batman films because this film will still have Sci-Fi touch no matter what.

Ah, Doomsday. Would certainly be an interesting idea. "Kill" him off in the first movie. Then throw him in the black costume. Nothing's edgier than black. Works for Batman. Worked for the X-Men.

Worked for Spider-Man (not so much in the movie, but still).

I remember watching the animated movie featuring Doomsday and thought it was pretty good. It would be interesting to see how they would handle such a character in a live-action movie. Of course, that would likely mean that we'd be seeing more Lex.
