So we have seen many coontest battles since Houenn. A battles where beauty is in the first place. So guys what do you like more, battles or contests? And who do you think gonna win : coordinator or trainer who specializes in a battles?

My favourite contest battle is a match between Drew and May in last Grand Festival (Flygon, Absol VS Squirtle, Combuskin)

Thats most obvious bettles. THere would be no Pokemn without Gyms.

I like them both but I like battles more. If I had to choose between contests and battle I`d choose both of them, of course! In contests I like that you don`t have to win by KO-you could just dodge flashy or rely solely on defenses or you could just counter the attack without doing dmg to the opponent and still learn-lots of possibilities here. And battles?...Lets just say that they are the heart of the series.

lol i was going to make a topic a little like this.Anyway i prefer battles contests just seem crappy to me.

In the games: Gyms (obviously)

In the anime: Mixture of both. Contests tend to have waaaaay more variety than Gyms. Some contests actually feel like mini-soap operas, you don't get that with Gyms.

Not to mention Ash's interactions with a lot of the Gym leaders is fairly boring and routine. Coordinator interaction is a lot more fun.

I have no complaints with the concept of contests, but most of the time they just ask themselves "how much can we show off our CGI, and how much can we make Sleet pull his fur out in frustration with our 'physics'?" The CGI effects are usually pretty laughable anyway, and just gaudy and misplaced. Sometimes they get contests right, but most of the time it's just annoying. Meanwhile, battles are what not only the show, but the games on which the show is based are focused around. Plus, while the newer ones are less exciting in my opinion, they're still the best part of the show.

If I had to choose I would choose both of them.I like more the battles, but A LOT can be learned by barttling in contests. You see many different types of combinations and use them and many other things can be learned and used in whatever you preffer.

Both gyms and contests show repetivity, but I would rather pick gyms.
That's because Ash uses different pokemon each time, as opposed to Dawn and May who use the same ones basically. Also, aside from the Wallace Cup, none of the contests were unique in any way. Gyms have a change in scenery too.

Battles of course, and it's so rare to get a contest battle that's as good as a gym battle (like Drew vs. May, one of my favorites).

How are contests like mini-soap operas? Explain.

Currently I prefer the gym battles. I care more about the progress of Ash's pokémon team, of whom all I am fond of, as opposed to the ongoing contest slog of Dawn and her mundane rivals. I can't enjoy something that focuses more on character if I don't actually like the characters all that much.

Reagarding the actual battling portion of each, I generally like both. The only differences between the two are a bunch of superficial rules and a crappy scoreboard that fluctuates like crazy. Whoop-dee-doo.

I would have to agree with this assignment. In the games the gyms are done much better than contests, but it's the anime's version of contest that made me care about contests.

I also like the rivalries done in contests (most of the time) especially the way the one-shot rivals are handled.

Overall, the gym battles are handled better. But I also enjoy the contests, too.
