Before Dawn was announced to be a coordinator, what did you want her to be?

I've been searching the forums lately and re-reading all the speculation and stuff that was posted when Dawn was shown for the first time in that poster, what did you guys want her to be before she was announced to be a coordinator?

I wanted her to be Ash's lesbian ex-girlfriend who, unbeknownst to him, bore him twins off-screen. She joins to twerps without telling Ash of their children in an attempt to re-connect with her former lover while at the same time look for some hawt Sinnoh region girls so she can get her sexual jollies. Her Pokémon would be Jynx, Mawile, and Gardevoir.

Or I just didn't think about it, ignored all the fan speculation, and waited for the answer to come.

Heh, I've been looking at one of the threads from that era tonight.

At least Hikari doesn't seem to have a bike, thank god.
:p

Anyways...

For a long time I thought there might be some new feature in DP that she would do. When she was revealed in a picture with her in front of Dialga and Palkia it looked like her plot would be actively linked to them but that was not to be.

I thought she'd be some kind of Ranger-esque trainer with something to do with the legendaries.

I was hoping after defeating the Battle Frontier Ash's time as the main character would come to a close. They had him proving himself as one of the greats and while he shouldn't have completely disappeared he could have been a cameo character.

Then Dawn would be the main character and the D/P her dimwitted sidekick (since he starts out as a dimwit in the games) as they fought Team Galaxy while trying to go on with their quests. She'd tackle gyms and he'd do contests.

Since Ash entered a contest so close to the end of Battle Frontier, I was hoping he'd get an itch for those and become a coordinator. Yeah, far out there, but hey. Which would make Dawn the gym battler.

heh... was Zack a name made up by some fan, or were they really planning on giving Hyouta a Western name?

Anyway, I think I was amongst the people who was expecting the anime to branch off into two series, with Satoshi and Haruka continuing the shameless game promotions with the usual gym battles and contests in a continuation of AG, and still involving your basic episodic events showcasing the new Pokemon. Meanwhile, Diamond/Pearl would be a more story-oriented series featuring Hikari and the new legendaries.

Due to a lack of information on my part, back when AG was starting, I suspected that this "new series" I heard about (namely mentioned by Dogasu on his site) would be something in the same vein as Digimon: focusing on different characters. When I finally saw AG promo art, however, it confirmed that "new series" was meant in the sense of being the same show with a title change, as is the case of several anime. But it was after that event that I was convinced Satoshi would stay throughout the anime's course, no matter what. Then, when I saw Hikari, and only Hikari, in the first Diamond/Pearl promo art, I was shocked... after last time, they couldn't possibly be getting rid of Satoshi now, could they? When a later magazine scan said at the bottom to "continue watching the adventures of Satoshi and Haruka in AG, as well", that made me assume that Diamond/Pearl was going to be a different series branched off from the current plot (if not taking place in an alternate reality altogether).

God, was I off ^^'... well, guess I know better now. 3-4 years from now, I gotta anticipate Satoshi staying, no spin-off series (in spite of how much money these guys are likely making to easily do so... the Housou specials seem to have been a one-time thing, oddly enough), and the female coordinator role being replaced with ANOTHER female coordinator... and I should probably expect Takeshi to be there AGAIN, whether he does or doesn't horribly stagnate by the end of DP.

Eh, I think that would be unlikely. The writers probably know they're pushing it with doing two coordinators in a row, I severely doubt we'll be sitting through three in a row. By the time D/P ends the writers will have done all they can with Contests between May and Dawn combined, and by then its time to move on. I love Contests but I know when enough is enough, I don't want to see a third girl doing the same thing.

I can see the 5th gen shamelessly introducing something new, hopefully, with the new female protagonist presumedly doing whatever that is. That's of course assuming the D/P series doesn't wrap up Ash's adventure, but all the Elite 4 promotion this saga is pretty hinty.

I thought she would have a quest to find out the legend/myth/something about Dialga and Palkia, and joins Ash and co (or the other way around) in the process.

*shrugs*

Lame, I know.

On another note, I have this nagging feeling that the D/P generation will be the last. Don't know why, and I anticipate I'm wrong, but still~

I really had no clue about what to expect with Hikari . . I assumed she would join Ash, but like others have stated before me, when the promotional picture came out of just her infront of the legendaries, I kind of flipped out. I had thoughts of her doing gym battles along with the rival (who I was hoping would do contests) in a new show that did not involve Satoshi, Takeshi and Haruka and I had thoughts of her replacing Haruka like a lot of people so rightly expected.

The fact is, once I got over the shock of the thought of the writers not continuing Satoshi's adventure, I was extremely excited about it for I'm personally over it . .

So what I figured would happen was that she would have some connection to Dialga and Palkia and she would collect badges with Jun tagging along filling the contest co-ordinator spot all the while trying to figure out why the hell it was that the legendaries kept appearing to her . . in her dreams or something like that.

I don't remember exactly :sweatlol:. I was kind of hoping she'd be a tomboyish character who did battles instead of contests, but I didn't have a very clear idea of what I expected her to be. Well, really, want I'd hoped for her to be was something different than we'd had before.

I was hoping for some kind of fireworks with the teams. I had no real idea how they would tie a starting trainer to that kind of stuff, but yeah, a heavier focus on that subplot than we've had in seasons past.

Although I was hoping for Hikari to be the new star...deep down I knew it wouldn't happen. Where as most shows give up on characters after so many years of repetitive plots, oh no, not pokemon. Satoshi returning was of no surprise to me.

Contests? Again, not a surprise. The only thing that did knock me off was the legendary information. With the way the poster talked, one would think Hikari would've had a bigger thing with them. Yanno, kinda like Minaki from the Crystal games. The idea of her going on a journey with sole reason of finding them...that interested me. Alas though, it didn't happen. Mind you I was rather surprised they actually let her and Natane know a crap load in the recent episode, but sadly there hasn't been anything like I wanted.

If anything really shocked me (not to mention made me wanna kill) was the whole Takeshi-Shinji thing. Even though I'm happy with Shinji and Satoshi's rivalrly, words cannot express the rage I felt when we found out Takeshi was coming AGAIN.

I was, OBVIOUSLY< hoping that Ash would leave. And Dawn take over. Just because...

I went with most of the fan spectulation. I went along with the theory that Hikari was on a separate quest to Satoshi, and that they'd meet up every so often as rivals, and that she'd be on the quest to defeat the 9 admins of Team Galaxy. Or the one where she'd be after the legends.

Thinking about it, they would've been MUCH better series XD

personally i didn't speculate, i didn't try and imagine what she might be, i didn't even know she existed until recently (lost sky ages ago and thus lost pokemon, to cut a long story short)

however when i did hear that Hoenn had ended and there would be a new series i did do one thing. i mentally said f*** off to any new characters and shouted with all of my strength 'bring back Misty!!!'

to those saying they hoped Ash (Satoshi) would leave and Dawn take over then i ask you this. what is pokemon without Ash? without Ash you have no Pikachu, without Pikachu then Nintendo loses it's franchise mascot that has gone on to be so succesful that it rivals the all time greats of super mario and the legend of Zelda. without Ash then all of the pokeshippers, advanceshippers, contest shippers (not sure if the last two are the same thing or not) would have very little to live for (speaking for myself there, even supporting the advanceshippers who i hate -_-)
without Ash my hopes for a reunion are lost, without Ash then much of the original fanbase of the anme will be alienated, much as many were with the start of the Hoenn season (or the end of Johto depending on how you look at it).
personally i would ask the question what is pokemon without Ash and Misty (and maybe Brock for a little humour, oh and Pikachu cos he has to be there).

well there we go. my first and probably last post on this site, unless ofcourse there is a reply to this post hat warrants my coming back.

forward the noble cause, forward the pokeshippers
(and i just made that up :p)

without Ash my hopes for a reunion are lost,

What reunion? After the Johto era, I don't think the writers are ever going to risk using that group again. It was basically a failed attempt to recapture the magic the group had in Kanto, so they've basically moved on and ditched that set-up.

personally i would ask the question what is pokemon without Ash and Misty

What is Pokemon without Misty? The show has gone on for two successful series without her and both girls who came after her became widly popular characters.

If anything, Misty now just represents a small part of the Pokemon anime overall, just the beginning. The middle is represented by May and the "late part" (if this is the late part), is represented by Dawn.

The longer this show goes on, the less important Misty becomes overall to the anime. Misty hardly "represents" the anime as much as she used to because she's not on the show anymore. Not to mention compared to May and Dawn, she played the smallest role out of any female on the cast.

I don't want to sound mean so I apologize if this upsets you, but the direction the show has taken pretty much proves that any girl who replaces Misty will be just as popular, and that's why the writers have no reason to go back to the way things were. After May was such a success, they wanted to repeat that success with Dawn, and they have accordingly.
