Ben's Journey: Book 1 - First Steps

Okay, this is a story that I have been writing for a while now. It is a fairly typical SI (Self Insertion) story, based on my adventures in the Yellow-version of the Pokémon game. However, those who have read it tell me that it is good, so I am posting it up on the board to give you all a chance to tell me what you think.

Ben's Journey
A Novel based on my Pokémon Yellow adventure

Pokémon, the Pokémon and the characters and situations of the Pokémon world are the legal property of Game Freak Software, Creatures Inc., Nintendo Entertainment and 4Kids Productions. No breach of copyright is intended. This is a non-profit work for free distribution through the World-Wide Web.

Author's Notes
This is loosely based on my progress through Pokémon Yellow. It also reflects parts of the new features of the Pokémon World as revealed in the Gold- Silver- and Crystal-versions of the game.

There is one major difference from the games. Ash Ketchum, has been the Pokémon Master now for ten years. He lives in Pallet Town with his wife, former Cerulean City Gym Leader Misty Waterflower. The two of them run the Blue Thunder Gym near the Pallet Docks, the Pallet Town end of Route 21.

Because I am basing this on the games rather than the animé, Technical Machines and Hidden Machines are in use, and the Experience Level rules are in operation. However, I will not limit Pokémon to just four skills. Instead, base level Pokémon can use six skills. Evolved Pokémon can use eight skills. Ultimate-level Pokémon can use ten skills. If a base-level Pokémon can only be evolved using an evolution stone or taming, then it can learn ten skills.

This story will, doubtless, have a strange feel for readers more used to the animé universe. There is no 'Trainer's License' in the game. Rather, anyone can catch a Pokémon (Rattatas and Pidgeys below Experience Level 2 can be caught without being weakened first). However, only the best can survive on the roads and beat the Gym Leaders, opening the way for them to compete against the Trainers of the Pokémon League.

As always, the story begins with a child and his dream. A dream to be the very best. A dream to 'catch 'em all', and to be the greatest Pokémon Master of all time.

Book 1 - First Steps
Introduction by Professor Samuel O. Oak
Hmm...? Ah! Hello! Welcome to the world of Pokémon. This is a world not unlike your world, but with one big difference. This is a world of Pokémon, strange magical creatures with many different powers and abilities. It is possible to catch and train Pokémon to perform many tasks. Many people do so, and you will find that most people in our homeland own at least one Pokémon.

Most people simply keep them as super-intelligent pets. Some train them to perform special tasks like construction work or even dancing. However, the most respected trainers are those who train Pokémon for the difficult gladiatorial battles of the Pokémon League. There is nothing more difficult and dangerous, and nothing that tests one's skill and empathy with one's Pokémon than training them to be successful fighters.

What do I do with Pokémon? Well, I was a great fighter once, but these days I am happy just to study Pokémon. I am proud to tell you that I am the best Pokémon researcher in these islands, to the point where they call me 'the Pokémon Professor'.

But this isn't my story. Nor is it the story of my two most brilliant students, my grandson, Garfield Shigeru Oak and my stepson Ashton Satoshi Ketchum. No, this is your story. Every Trainer has his own epic tale to tell on the roads and fields of our land, and your very own Pokémon legend is about to begin...

Chapter 1 - Pallet Town
Ben Russell-Gough, a 13-year-old boy living in Pallet Town of Viridian County of the Kanto region of Pokémon Island, was playing a game on his PC that Saturday afternoon when his mother, Sue, called him from downstairs. "Just a minute, Mom!" he called back. He shut down his PC and went downstairs to see what his mother wanted.

"Ben, I just got a phone call from Professor Oak," Sue said. "For some reason, he asked for you to go over to his laboratory."

Ben's ears immediately pricked with interest. Professor Oak was one of the top minds in Pokémon research, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone of Ben's age who was not interested in Pokémon, especially catching one of their own. This was especially the case in Pallet Town, where one of the toughest of the Pokémon League's gyms, which taught proficiency in Training, was situated. Ben was always seeing Trainers passing through to face Ash Ketchum in battle. More often than not, he would then see them depart, amazed at the speed and ease of the Gym Leader's victory.

"Hurry over to see him," Sue continued. "You don't want to keep such an important man waiting." She had finished her advice to an empty room. Ben had already pulled on his coat and was running through the small town towards the Oak Research Laboratories.

He was met at the door to the main building (which was reminiscent of a farmhouse) by the Professor's wife, Delia. Ben was naturally in awe of the Pokémon Master's mother, but he was able to stammer out his errand to the kind-faced woman. "Hmm..." Delia said. "I'm afraid that Samuel isn't in, Ben," she told the boy with sandy brown hair and deep blue eyes. "He might be up near where Route 1 starts. He said that he wanted to look for some base-level Pokémon today. Try to find him there."

"Thanks, Mrs. Oak," Ben said, bowing politely before leaving the doorstep.

"Be careful Ben!" Delia shouted out. "There are wild Pokémon in that area!"

Ben knew the dangers, of course. Everyone who lived on Pokémon Island did. However, he had an errand to do, and, frankly, he had better things to do with his time today, so he didn't waste any time heading north to where Route 1, the hikers' route to Viridian City, began.

The neat gardens and tree-lined streets of Pallet Town ended very suddenly with a wooden fence with a stile gate. Beyond the fence lay grasslands, some patches of woodland and the wilds where the wild Pokémon lived. Ben had never been out there before, although he knew how to survive out in the wilds. His father took them camping for every summer holiday, after all.

After failing to see Professor Oak, Ben decided to cross the fence and look for him in the tall grass. Feeling very brave, he crossed the stile gate. Suddenly, he heard a voice call out. "Watch out, young man! Don't move!" There was so much authority in the deep adult voice that Ben did freeze. It was a good thing that he did, as something small and yellow was standing almost right in front of him. Ben jumped back in instinctive fear and fell on his backside with a cry of surprise and panic.

What he saw was a yellow rodent-like animal with black-tipped prehensile ears, a thunderbolt-shaped tail, red cheek pads and black stripes on its' back. The animal glared at Ben and blue-white sparkles of electricity began to crawl along its' cheeks. "Pika! Kachu-ka-pi!" It screeched at him.

Suddenly, a figure was looming over him. "Oh no you don't my little friend," the figure said. "Super Ball go!" A ball, which looked ceramic, tumbled through the air. Before the little creature could react, the ball struck it on the head and split open into one grey and white half. The animal flashed into white light and was sucked into the ball. The ball snapped shut and fell to the ground, flashing red lights around a golden disc inset into the division between grey and white hemispheres. The ball started rocking violently and a loud buzzed sounded.

Ben immediately recognised his saviour. The tall man with bushy black eyebrows and grey hair was Pallet Town's first citizen, after all: Professor Samuel Ookido Oak. The researcher watched expressionlessly as the trap ball continued to rock and buzz loudly. He calmly pulled another ball from under his white ankle-length lab coat. This one was red-and-white and had a leaf painted on the red hemisphere above the gold disc.

Then the trap stopped shaking. The lights changed to green and the ball made a pleasant 'ping' sound. Oak visibly relaxed and slid the red-and-white ball back onto his belt. "Well, I wonder what we've got here?" the researcher murmured as he picked up the trap ball. He put the ball into his pocket and turned to smile at Ben. "Now tell me, young Benjamin, what are you doing out here in the tall grass? Wild Pokémon live in this area, you know."

Ben lowered his eyes in embarrassment. How was he supposed to explain to such a famous man that he was in too much of a hurry to find out what he wanted to think about the safety lessons he had heard since he was a small boy? "I... er... I was looking for you, Professor," he said.

"For me?" Oak said in surprise. "Whatever for?"

Ben blinked in surprise. "My mom said that you wanted me to go on an errand for you," he said.

Oak's face twisted and went through some of the most amazing contortions. "Oh yes," he said at last, sounding a bit embarrassed. "I was so enjoying chasing Pidgey that I completely forgot." The old scientist shook his head. "In any case, you shouldn't have come out here without a Pokémon of your own to protect you," he said in a stern 'lecture' tone of voice, frowning and waggling a finger in reproof. He cocked his head. "Maybe... Yes. Yes, your grades are excellent from what your mother told Delia, so why not?" Oak's expression changed to a warm smile so suddenly that Ben was a bit disoriented. "We'll do something about your lack of protection immediately," Oak announced. "Come with me."

What is he talking about? Ben asked himself in mystification. However, he wasn't about to disobey such an august personage, so he followed the scientist back to the laboratory. Delia greeted her husband warmly in a way that embarrassed Ben, whose body was just beginning to awaken to adulthood. "Please wait for me in the living room," Oak requested.

Ben did as he was asked. The room had lots of interesting photos from Oak's long career, including photos of him with Gary Oak, the Viridian City Gym Leader, and with Ash Ketchum, his stepson, the current Pokémon Master and the Leader of Pallet Town's own Pokémon Gym. "Ah! Ben!" Professor Oak entered the room again, seemingly oblivious at the way the young teen jumped in surprise. "Thank you for coming to see me on such short notice, but I need a small favour done, and your mother was kind enough to volunteer your services."

Thanks, Mom, Ben thought. Out loud, what he said was: "What can I do for you, Professor?"

"I have a small package waiting for me to collect at Viridian City's Pokémon Mart," he explained. "I would go to collect it myself, but I am very busy today. I was wondering if you would be so kind to get it for me?"

Ben considered that request. Viridian was the Mother City to Pallet Town and lay just 25 miles north of the town up the Viridian River. It would take about eight hours to walk the distance, or just two hours to go by bicycle (although Ben didn't have one). Viridian was not a particularly big city, but it had plenty of distractions. The thought of visiting all the shops and museums in the city without his mother's close supervision immediately caught Ben's attention. He didn't have to think too hard at all. "It would be my pleasure, Professor," he replied.

"Excellent," Oak said, beaming widely. "You'd better come with me."

~*~*~*~

Ben was astonished to be taken deep into the Research Centre to the laboratories. All around the teenage boy lay esoteric scientific instruments. As he entered, he got a smile and a thumbs-up from a black-haired young man who Ben suspected was Tracey Sketchitt, the Professor's assistant and current student.

When they reached the far end of the labs, Ben noticed the grey-and-white trap ball was now enclosed in some strange equipment. Oak's sharp eyes caught his interest. "The animal is called a 'Pikachu,' Ben," he said. "It is a rodent-like mammal that can deliver powerful and painful electric shocks from the red glands on its' cheeks. You are lucky I came along or you could have been seriously hurt." Ben noticed that someone had pained a yellow lightning bolt on the grey hemisphere of the ball, just over the gold disc, which he now saw had a small glass lens at the centre.

"What will you do with it, sir?" he asked.

Oak looked up in surprise from where he had been checking his PC. "Hmm? Oh, I'll probably have to release it, Ben," he said. "Pikachus make poor Pokémon for starter trainers and this one is too young and weak to interest a more experienced Trainer." Oak considered his visitor for a moment and then suddenly remembered why the boy was in his labs. "My goodness!" he said. He turned back to his desk and rifled through the draws hastily. "Ah!" He presented Ben with a paper slip with the Professor's mailing address and some code numbers printed on it. "That is the chit for the package that I want," Oak said. "Give that to the man at the collection desk in the Pokémart and he will give you the package."

Ben nodded and pocketed the chit. He was just about to leave when Oak spoke up. "One moment, young man," he said. Ben turned back to the researcher. "It will take you the best part of a day to make the journey to Viridian City," he said, "but you would cut two or more hours off of the journey time if you went along Route 1."

"But Professor, Route 1 is dangerous," Ben protested.

"Only if you don't have a Pokémon to defend yourself," Oak said. "I can solve that problem for you." Oak smiled and raised a grey-and-white ball like the one used to catch the Pikachu, but this one had an 'E' painted above the lens.

Ben's heart leapt in excitement, but before he could find out what this creature was, a loud voice called out. "Professor!"

Oak visibly winced as Adam Bryant, son of a local property owner and one of Pallet Town's more unpleasant teenagers, strode in. The blonde boy strode over to the Professor, deliberately shouldering Ben aside as he did so. "Professor, my father told me that you wanted to see me."

"Yes, I did, Adam," Oak said. "I will just finish with Ben and then I will talk with you."

"Is that a Pokémon?" Adam asked, pointing at the Pokéball. "I want it! I asked father for one, so that must be what you wanted to see me about, isn't it?"

That was typical Adam. He was used to getting what he wanted on demand and not a moment later. Ben figured out that Mr. Bryant had asked the Professor to get his son a Pokémon. Oak sighed. "I have a Pokémon for you, Adam, but it isn't this one. This one is for Ben."

Adam looked at the other boy and barely managed to avoid sneering. 'Why bother giving him a Pokémon?' the look seemed to say. Ben bristled, but he wasn't going to start a fight. There was never any point being the one who starts trouble. "Professor, I want that one," Adam said. He smirked disrespectfully at the elder researcher. "I'm sure that you don't want me telling my father that you went back on your agreement with him."

Oak rolled his eyes. "You may tell your father what you wish," Oak said. "Frankly I do not consider it worth my while worrying about his opinion of me. However, if you truly are desperate to have this particular Pokémon, then you may do so." He gave the ball to Adam. "It is an Eevee, an evolving Pokémon. Depending on how you chose to train him, he may evolve in several different ways."

Adam grinned as he raised the Pokéball. "However he evolves he will be the strongest of them all," he said with a smirk. "I won't accept anything else."

Oak scowled as the boy swaggered off, still carrying his ball as if it were a trophy. He shook his head and turned back to Ben. "So, I guess that I don't get a Pokémon after all?" Ben asked, trying to mask his disappointment and choke down his tears.

"Not at all," Oak replied. Much to Ben's surprise, he plucked the Pikachu's Pokéball from the scanning apparatus where it was resting and handed it over to the teen. "I was going to test Mr. Bryant's self-confidence with a difficult starting Pokémon," Oak said. "However, as he decided that he did not want to wait, you can take this Pokémon instead. This is a female Pikachu. They are a wilful species, but loyal to those who are loyal to them." Ben stared at the Pokéball in shock, making the researcher grin. "Activate the ball and introduce yourself to her, Ben."

Ben looked at the ball for a moment before finding and pressing the 'release' touch pad. The ball split open and vomited out a flash of white light that resolved itself into the Pikachu who attacked him earlier. "Pikachu!" the little animal cried out in shock.

"Er... Hi, Pikachu, I'm Ben," Ben said. The animal cocked its' head. It clearly could understand what he was saying to it. "Would you like to be my friend?" The Pikachu turned and looked away from the boy.

Oak laughed. "Newly-caught Pokémon are always like that," he said. "Don't worry, she'll come to appreciate you if you treat her well." Oak picked up a clipboard and sorted through the notes for a moment. "Pikachus of her maturity, I rated her at Experience Level 5, usually know three skills: tackle, thundershock and growl. The first two are offensive moves, the second is defensive move that reduces the power of opponents' attacks." Ben nodded, trying to take this in. "I advise you to take a day or two to train Pikachu to understand your commands," Oak continued. "Then be off about your errand." The old man winked and turned back to his work. Ben, feeling a bit confused, found the 'recall' button on the Pokéball and watched as the Pikachu was re-absorbed into the storage device.

~*~*~*~

About an hour later, Ben was on the hillside where the Research Centre was situated. He was doing some Training with his new Pokémon. Ben had got off to a rocky start with the little animal. She had initially refused to do anything that he said and had tried to run away a few times, forcing Ben to recall her to her Pokéball. However, Ben had managed to get through to her by inviting her to use her electrical powers on him. When that failed to knock him out, he told her that he wanted to help her get stronger.

The Pikachu considered this carefully for a while before signalling her agreement by touching her nose to Ben's outstretched hand. She didn't know, just yet, what to make of her new situation, but the human was kind enough and had even fed her. She would see just what he required of her before making a decision about whether or not to run away. Ben had decided that 'Pikachu' was too generic, so he decided to give her a name. He called her Shock, and it was surprising to see how quickly she got used to that name.

"Hey wimp!" Ben winced when he heard Adam's voice. "I see that the Professor gave you a Pokémon too. It is probably weak, just like you."

"What do you want, Adam?" Ben said, putting an edge of boredom in his voice. He didn't like the bully and he wasn't scared of him.

"I want to give my Pokémon real-life experience," the bully said. "Your Pokémon against mine in a one-on-one battle." Ben considered that and looked at Shock. "What's the matter, are you scared that your little rat might get hurt?" Adam taunted.

Ben stood up. "Stop flapping your mouth," he replied, making the other boy scowl and look at him dangerously. "If you want to battle, just say so." It was a matter of honour amongst all those who trained Pokémon and both boys knew it. If one is challenged to fight with your Pokémon, you take up that challenge.

Adam bowed mockingly. "How nice of you to agree," he sneered. He threw his Pokéball. "Go Champ!" he shouted. His Eevee materialised with a little howling cry. It was a brown-and beige fox about the same size as Shock. It looked pitifully weak, but Ben wasn't about to prejudge anything at this stage.

Ben threw his own Pokéball, releasing Shock. The two adversaries faced each other for a moment before Adam began hostilities. "Champ, use Tackle!"

"Use Thundershock, Shock!" Ben responded. Shock was the faster of the two and unleashed a crackling whiplash of blue-white electricity that struck the Eevee and made it howl in pain. However, the little fox-like Pokémon didn't go down, instead he leapt forwards and shoulder-charged Shock, sending her tumbling down the hill a few paces. "Shock! Oh no!" Ben couldn't believe it. Despite the power of Shock's attack, the Pikachu seemed to have come out the worse off. Ben had a sudden inspiration. "Shock use Growl!" he instructed. The little Pikachu began to growl. Ben shook his head and rubbed behind his ears from the strange infrasonic vibrations.

"Don't hesitate, Champ," Adam commanded. "Use Tackle again!" This time, Shock moved and dodged the oncoming Eevee. "Blast it!" Adam was furious. "Use Pound this time! Get that stupid rat!"

"Keep up the Growl, Shock," Ben countered. He had realised that he had to weaken the Eevee's attack so that Shock's weaker attacks would make a difference. The Eevee rushed towards Shock, this time getting very close before jumping into the air and driving all four of his legs against her back, knocking her flat.

"Ha! That's great!" Adam exulted. "Hardly a contest at all!" The rich boy's eyes bulged open very satisfactorily when Shock leapt to her feet. She was hurt, but the use of Growl had paid off. The Eevee's attack had been weakened and hadn't been enough to knock her out.

"Blast it! Use Tail Whip!" Adam snapped.

"Use Growl again, Shock!" Ben said. The Eevee jumped forwards and slapped its' thick furry tail over Shock's snout. She seemed stunned for a second, but she was able to deliver a growl despite that. Ben broke out into a sweat. He had to push this before the stronger Eevee was able to deliver a decisive blow. "Okay, Shock use another Thundershock attack!"

"Pika... CHUUU!" Shock squealed and unleashed another electric blast. This one hurt clearly hurt Champ and the Eevee staggered sideways, twitching slightly.

"You stupid fleabag!" Adam snapped. "Don't stand there, Tackle the rat!" Ben watched in amazement as the Eevee blinked and shook his head again, seemingly to be unable to carry out Adam's orders.

"Use Thundershock again, Shock," Ben called out. Shock attacked, making Champ stiffened in pain and froze for a second, before nearly collapsing, shaking his head in a dazed fashion. "You're winning Shock!" Ben could hardly believe it.

"Wake up, Champ!" Adam shouted. "Finish the rat with a Tackle!"

"Counter with a Tackle of your own, Shock," Ben countered. The two Pokémon shot towards each other and collided with a meaty 'thump'. Both tumbled to the ground. After a moment, Champ staggered to his feet, but Shock didn't. She seemed to have fainted or blacked out. "Oh no, Shock I'm sorry."

Adam was triumphant and didn't bother to hide it. "Well, the outcome was never in doubt," he sneered. He recalled Champ to his Pokéball without even bothering to thank the clearly injured Eevee for his efforts. "You keep up your efforts and you might be able to stand on your own two feet one day, wimp! As for me...? Well Champ is already strong, but I am going to make him even stronger." With an imperious air, the boy strode off.

Ben picked up the limp Pikachu and stroked her face gently. "Shock, can you hear me?" Shock opened her eyes and murmured a sound that made Ben think that she was saying something like 'ouch'. "Shock, I'm sorry," he said.

Suddenly, Professor Oak was running over. "Ben!" he shouted. "I thought I saw electric-type attacks! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Ben said, trying to keep his voice level, "but Shock is hurt!"

The scientist put a friendly hand on Ben's shoulder. "It happens," he said. "Come on, I'll rejuvenate her at the laboratories and then you can take her home."

~*~*~*~

Oak had just handed Shock's Pokéball back to Ben when the ball suddenly started to shake violently. "What the...?" Oak blurted. Then the ball split open and Shock materialised, looking very annoyed. "How odd!" Oak said. "Most Pokémon don't mind being in a Pokéball, but Shock doesn't seem to care for it at all!" The researcher shrugged. "Well, she has already bonded with you, Ben, so I don't think she will try to run away. Just let her follow you or ride on your shoulder."

Ben knelt before Shock, who looked away. "Shock, I'm sorry for getting you hurt," he said. She didn't respond. "I'll try harder in the future, I promise. I won't ever let you get hurt easily ever again." There was still no response. "We should go home," Ben said. "Come on." Ben turned, took a few steps, but the Pikachu didn't move. Ben sighed. He thought about ordering her, but he thought about the way Adam talked to his Eevee. No, he didn't want to ever be like that. "If you are tired, you can ride on my shoulder and I'll carry you home," he said.

This caught Shock's attention. She turned around and looked at the human boy. "Chu-ka-pi-kachu?" she squeaked. She sniffed his left hand uncertainly before slowly climbing up onto his left shoulder and settling there. "Chu-pi, Ka!" she cooed happily. Ben wondered if 'Ka' was how she said his name.

"There, isn't that encouraging?" Oak said with a smile.

"I think it is incredibly cute," Delia said, walking into the lab at that moment. "It reminds me of Ash with his Pikachu."

Ben turned away and, with Shock squeaking at every footstep, headed for home. "Thanks for everything, Professor," he called. "I'll go and get your package tomorrow!"

~*~*~*~

"Oh, what an adorable little Pokémon!" Sue said as she greeted her son. "Is it yours?"

"Her name is Shock. Professor Oak gave her to me," Ben said proudly. "I'm going on a trip to Viridian City for him tomorrow, and he said I would need a Pokémon for protection." Ben tickled the smug-looking Pikachu. Shock seemed to understand that all the approval was being directed at her.

Sue smiled in a melancholy way. "I suppose it had to happen eventually. All little boys grow up and leave home on their journeys to manhood." Sue suddenly shook her head and smiled at Ben mischievously. "They said so on TV," she added with a wink.

That night, Shock settled down in a comfortable nest in the blankets at Ben's feet. She hadn't expected anything that had happened to her today, but she had to admit that things could have been worse. Right now, she found herself wondering about what tomorrow might bring.

To be continued...

Book 1 - First Steps
Chapter 2 - Route 1
Next morning, Ben was up early, ready for his journey north. How odd that such a simple errand should turn out to be such a complex task. Already he had learnt a host of new skills... and he had a new friend.

Shock watched with interest as her newfound human ally packed his backpack. She still resented everything that had happened to her, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't view this human as an enemy. He clearly cared for her safety and he seemed sincere in his desire to help her grow stronger. Her prehensile ears perked up as he Trainer called her to his shoulder. She clambered up Ben's arm and settled herself into what she thought of as 'her' spot on his left shoulder. Just before he turned to leave his room, Ben picked up something that his mother had bought from the general store for him yesterday and slid it into his backpack. It was a bottle of HP-restore potion; the standard medical restorative for injured Pokémon. It was enough for six doses, each capable of restoring up to 20 health index points.

"You ready, Shock?" Ben asked.

"Pika!" Shock replied enthusiastically.

The two friends descended the stairs and met up with Sue by the front doors. "Okay, you two, be careful," Sue said, covering her worry by fussing over her son's coat and the straps of his backpack. "You haven't taken too much stuff have you, Ben? I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself by trying to carry too heavy a load. I..."

"Mom, I'll be okay!" Ben assured his mother in an embarrassed tone of voice. Was it his imagination, or was Shock laughing at him?

Sue drew in a deep breath and smiled at her son. "I'm sure that you will," she said quietly. "You always have been brave and resourceful." Her smile began to crumble. "Be careful, okay?"

"I promise, Mom," Ben replied with the usual careless smile of the very young. "I'll call you when we reach Viridian City!" he called as he set off down the front garden path, turning to wave at his mother.

"Chu-kapi-pika-pi, Chu!" Shock called, waving also.

Sue smiled and waved until her son was out of sight. Then, with a deep sigh, she returned to her suddenly all-too-empty home.

~*~*~*~

So, once again, Ben found himself in front of the stile gate separating Pallet Town from Route 1. He looked at Shock, who was looking at the tall grass with some interest. "Are you ready, pal?" Ben asked the Pikachu.

The small rodent-like electric-type Pokémon grinned at the young human and grinned infectiously. "Pi-chu-kapi!" she squeaked. Ben still hadn't figured out her language, but her enthusiasm and the way that she was leaning forwards on his shoulder seemed to indicate that she was eager for them to start on their adventure.

Ben grinned and climbed up over the stile and into the long grass. The change was almost immediate. Although the Pokémon were the dominant animal group on Pokémon Island, more normal birds, animals and insects were common too, so Ben was surrounded by the sounds of wildlife. Cicadas chirped, birds sang and the wind through the grass made a pleasant whistling noise as Ben walked onwards, Shock murmuring on his shoulder.

With a cry of glee, Shock leapt from Ben's shoulder and raced off into the grass. Ben was shocked. Where did she think she was going? "Hey! Come back!" he called out. "Shock, don't run off on your own!" The little Pikachu ignored the human's calls. This was what she wanted after all. In the grass, the recall laser of the Pokéball couldn't hit her easily. She would lose the slow, clumsy boy in second. "Shock! Where do you think you are going?" Ben called. As she scampered along, Shock grinned at the human's naiveté. Where did he think she was going? The tone of Ben's voice rose slightly in panic as he realised that he was on his own in a Pokémon-infested area. "Shock, come back! I need you!"

This time, Shock did stop in her headlong flight. 'I need you.' It was odd how just three words could have such an effect. Okay, so she hadn't any choice about whether or not she was placed into Ben's custody. However, he had always treated her kindly and fairly. Furthermore, and this was critical in the Pikachu's view, the human trusted her. He relied on her power and strengths to protect him in the difficult environment of the wild. She turned around and looked at Ben, noting the clear signs of fear in his expression, the posture of his body and his scent. Seemingly without any conscious decision on her part, she slowly walked back to the human, who was still standing where she left him.

Ben almost collapsed with relief when he saw Shock again. "Shock! Thank God! You gave me the biggest scare!"

Shock looked up at Ben and watched as he knelt and offered her his hand to allow her to climb back onto his shoulder. His trust was... somewhat mortifying. It made her feel selfish and small for wanting to abandon him when he had never done anything to hurt her. Okay, there was that nasty coming together with an Eevee yesterday, but Ben hadn't wanted her hurt and had done best to ensure that she came out of that fight the winner. Shock cocked her head and came to a decision. She would stick with Ben until such time as he no longer required her services. Certainly he seemed to know how to teach her to fight more effectively. She could leave him any time. Yes, she would stay with him for now. She would gain far more than she would lose.

Shock nudged Ben's fingers and then climbed up onto his left shoulder. Once there, she rubbed her face affectionately. "Please don't ever scare me like that again, Shock," Ben pleaded. "I don't want you getting hurt by whatever is out there."

Shock chattered something reassuring and rubbed Ben's cheeks again. She purred as the boy responded by stroking her sensitive cheek pads. Yes, she could leave any time. For now, however, she would stay with her simple but good-natured friend. Just for now.

Ben was wondering if the stories they told in school about the dangers of wild areas were exaggerated. He had been walking for almost an hour and he hadn't seen anything on his way. Right now, he was just entering a second patch of long grass, this one near the banks of the Viridian River. However, he hadn't seen any Pokémon. Hey, knucklehead, he thought in disbelief as he walked under a small isolated copse of trees. You've got it easy. Why are you complaining?

At that point, just to prove that bad things only happen after you relax, something brown and airborne threw some grit in Ben's face. "Hey! What...?"

"Pidg-ee!" was the screeched response.

Ben wiped his face to clear his eyes to see a bird of some kind sitting in front of him. No, he decided, noticing the glint of intelligence in its' eyes, not a bird, a flying-type Pokémon. The Pokémon glared at the human dangerously and shifted its' weight as if it were considering its' options.

"Pika!" Shock leapt from Ben's shoulders and landed on the ground in between the Pokémon and her friend. Ben was glad for her initiative, as he had been so surprised and scared that he had temporarily forgotten the presence of his little yellow bodyguard.

Ben licked his lips and realised that this was for real. The bird-like Pokémon looked quite angry and he had no doubt that it would injure him if it could. "Shock, get ready," he warned. Suddenly the bird opened its' wings and launched itself towards him. "Use Thundershock!" Ben almost shouted, fear adding power to his words. The stream of blue-white electricity surrounded the bird and it dropped to the ground with a loud thud and a cry of pain. "Yeah! Direct hit, well done Shock!" Much to Ben's dismay, the Pokémon rose to its' feet again. "Uh oh, it looks like it still has a little fight in it."

Yeah, and now it is mad at me instead of you, Shock added to herself as the bird-like Pokémon glared angrily at her. With a cry of rage, the creature launched itself towards the Pikachu.

"Use Thundershock again!" Ben called. Shock obeyed at once and the creature seemed to go limp in mid-air. It fell into the long grass and the two companions lost sight of it. Ben tensed for a moment, waiting for another attack. When it didn't come, he relaxed for a second before jumping forwards and sweeping Shock up in his arms. It took the Pikachu a few seconds to realise that the human wasn't attacking at her, but hugging and tickling her in congratulations. "You did it, Shock! You beat it! You can win and you've proven it!"

"Chu-ka-pipi, Ka! Chu-ka!" Ben wasn't sure how, but somehow he knew that Shock was as excited and as pleased as he was at her victory over the Pokémon. Although neither of them knew at the time, the two of them had passed a critical test together, and their lives would never be the same again.

~*~*~*~

The pathway along Route 1 was hardly direct. Several rocky ridges bisected the land between Pallet Town and Viridian City that made travelling north hard. Of course, travelling south was a cinch, even rather exciting if you dared jump the ridges. For travellers like Ben, though, it was a matter of finding places where landslides had created ramps where one could climb up to the next level. It was a time consuming process, and one that put you in reach of yet more wild Pokémon. Ben and Shock had an encounter with another of the brown flying-types (which Ben had now remembered were called 'Pidgey').

A short time after crossing the second pressure ridge, Ben encountered a fellow traveller in the form of the driver of a van which was parked next to the fence that marked the division between the wild areas and the Pallet Town to Viridian City road. The bonnet of the van was open and the driver was just wiping his grease-stained hands on a cloth. The man looked a bit annoyed. "Are you okay, mister?" Ben called out.

The man looked around and smiled grimly. "I am, but my van isn't," the man said. "It looks like my working day has come to an early end!" The man walked over to the fence and peered closer at Shock. "Say, that's a cute little Pikachu!" he said. Shock beamed at this new human in such a way that suggested to Ben that she didn't need to be told that she was cute. "You two just started off together?"

Ben smiled and nodded. "Yeah, Professor Oak gave her to me yesterday."

"You got a Pokémon from Professor Oak?" The man was impressed. "You should feel honoured, son. He doesn't do that for just anyone!"

Ben blushed at that implied comment. "Well, he wanted me to do something for him," the boy explained, "so he gave me a Pokémon for protection."

"So that is what he said, was it?" the van driver said cryptically. "I tell you what, wait here for a moment." The man went back to his van and came back with a small bottle of something. Ben realised that it was a one-dose bottle of HP-restore potion. "I was taking these potions for a promotion at the Viridian City Pokémart," the man said. "I won't get there in time now, but there is no sense wasting this stuff."

"Oh, I couldn't," Ben began.

The man interrupted. "Take it," he said. "You'll need all the help that you can get. To Professor Oak's new protégé!"

Ben blushed again. Does he really think that the Professor has chosen me for something special? he asked himself. "I... Thanks," Ben said, taking the small bottle from the man. "Look, I've got to be going now."

"Journey safely," the man said, waving to Ben as the boy walked deeper into Route 1.

~*~*~*~

About four hours into the journey, Ben called a brief halt for lunch. The two companions, one human and the other Pokémon, sat down. Ben tucked into the lunch that his mother had prepared and Shock ate a flavoured Pokémon meal bar (one of the thousands of varieties created by the famous Pokémon breeder, Brock Slate).

As the two sat down relaxing, Ben saw something moving in a nearby patch of long grass. "Shock!" he hissed. Shock looked up from the saucer of water, which she had been lapping at thirstily. She immediately saw what Ben had seen. Something was moving in the tall grass, and it was moving towards us. Instinctively, she got ready to fight.

Suddenly, a blue-grey rodent with a long prehensile tail shot out of the grass and lanced right at Ben, obviously aiming for the apple that he was eating. Ben was surprised by the sudden assault and a little afraid, but he was able to respond. "Shock, use Thundershock!" The Pikachu launched her electrical assault and the rat-like Pokémon was blown over onto its' side. "Great shot!" Ben cheered.

The creature was on its' feet immediately. "Rat-at! Attata!" It screeched. Suddenly, it lunged towards shock and slapped its' tail over her face, making her cry out in surprise. Instinctively, she lunged forwards to knock the other Pokémon away, but missed by a narrow margin. The wild Pokémon shoulder charged her, sending her sprawling.

Ben winced. "Watch out!" he groaned. "Shock are you okay?" Shock shook her head, feeling shocked. That attack had taken more out of her than it should have. "Don't panic now," Ben said, as much to himself as her. "Use Thundershock again!" Shock lashed out and her opponent was nearly knocked out by the attack. It seemed immobilised for a moment. Ben decided to take advantage of that. "Now use Tackle!"

"Pikaaa!" Shock threw herself forwards and, this time, her shoulder-charge connected with her opponent. The rat-like Pokémon was sent rolling over-and-over from the impact and she lost sight of it in the tall grass.

"Okay! You did it!" Ben shouted. "Shock, that thing hit you really hard, are you okay?" Shock allowed the human to pick her up and check her over. "You're going to hurt in the morning," he said. "You know, you look stronger, though," he added. Shock cocked her head. "Maybe it is me," Ben continued. "But you really have improved. You are more accurate and I think that your tackles are harder."

Shock shrugged. Practice makes perfect, she thought.

~*~*~*~

"You know," Ben said, "I think that the move that wild Pokémon used was Tail Whip, the same one that Adam's Eevee used." Shock, who was riding on Ben's shoulder, nodded. That seemed reasonable. "It seems to make attacks more powerful. Maybe it softens you up or something." Ben looked at Shock and grinned. "Do you want to learn it?" Shock looked at Ben in surprise. "Come on," Ben said. "It might be useful! I'll show you how to do it and you can practice on my hand." Shock had to restrain the urge to giggle, but she jumped from Ben's shoulder, willing to try anything once.

Much to her surprise, she found it easy to learn the move. It felt right somehow, as if she was always capable of doing this but hadn't known it before. Suddenly, she suddenly felt a lot happier about her association with Ben. He really was making her stronger. Feeling greatly encouraged, the two friends set off together again.

After travelling a short distance further, they had another encounter. This time, Ben nearly stood on another of the blue-grey rodents. Ben jumped back as the creature hissed and leapt forwards. "Rattata!" It shouted at him.

Shock reacted with a loud battle cry and jumped to the ground in front of the wild Pokémon. Ben swallowed. Stay calm, he told himself. Then he recalled some of Professor Oak's advice. Believe in Shock and she will believe in herself. "Okay, Shock, use Tail Whip!" Shock jumped forwards and slapped her stiff, thunderbolt-shaped tail over the other Pokémon's snout. The surprised creature fell back with a cry of pain. After a moment, it darted forwards and tackled the Pikachu, making her fall on her side with her own outcry. "You can take it, Shock! Use thundershock!"

Easy for you to say, Shock thought angrily, but she complied. The electrical attack slammed into the rat-like wild Pokémon and it fell over, quite unconscious. Shock blinked. Either I've got stronger, or those rat-faces are not as tough as they were, Shock thought.

"Are you stronger or was it weaker?" Ben unknowingly repeated. "I think it might be both. You've got stronger, and that Tail Whip made that wild Pokémon weaker and unable to handle the attack! Great! You're just getting better all the time, Shock!" Shock turned to grin at her Trainer. She was about to jump to his shoulder, but instead she staggered. Ben ran forwards with a concerned expression on his face. "Okay, now I think you're hurt," he said. "Hold still." Ben ran his hands over the Pikachu's sides, grimacing when he noticed the tender flesh on her side. "Okay, I'll help you, Shock."

As the astonished Pikachu watched, Ben broke out his medical kit. He smeared soothing antiseptic cream on her bruised sides and offered her the liquid given to him by the van driver. Shock shivered as she swallowed the icy fluid and suddenly felt a rush of strength. The HP-restore potion had returned her to full strength with one dose. "Chu!" she said in amazement. "Kapi-kachu-pi-ka-ka, Ka!"

Ben interpreted that as thanks and responded by tickling her on a cheek pad. "Hey, I said that I would look after you, didn't I?" he said.

And so he did, Shock realised, snuggling closer to her friend's face as she settled onto his shoulder.

~*~*~*~

After climbing one last rocky ridge, Ben and Shock had a clear run to Viridian City. There was just one last area of high grass in their way. The two friends, suddenly confident in each other and in their partnership, took the challenge with aplomb. Another Pidgey, and one of the blue-grey rodents ('Rattata', Ben now recalled) stood in their way, but Shock was suddenly a lot more formidable a combatant. Under Ben's direction, she swept the wild Pokémon aside.

Within an hour of Ben healing Shock's injuries after the second battle with a Rattata, the two friends reached a fence, a perimeter road and, beyond it, the buildings and people of Viridian City. They had reached their destination.

Ben's Journey
A Novel based on my Pokémon Yellow adventure

Chapter 3 - Viridian City
Ben had visited Viridian City before, but only on adult-supervised trips, either with his parents or with his school, so he felt like he was seeing the metropolis of a million people for the first time. Shock, on the other hand, felt disturbed at seeing so many humans together in one place. "Come on," Ben said. "Let's go to the Pokémon Centre." Shock had been hurt in her most recent tussle with a Rattata. Although she wasn't badly hurt, Ben knew that she had used up a lot of strength on the trek north. The Pokémon Centres provided free care to any Trainer and their Pokémon, so it was a logical first stop when visiting a new town.

Ben walked through the moderately busy streets, taking in the sights. Viridian City wasn't the largest city in Kanto by a long margin (Saffron City held that record). However, it was the home of the administration offices of the Pokémon League, so Gym Leaders and wandering trainers alike frequently visited it. It was also the crossroads between the hikers' routes deeper into Kanto and the long road (Route 25, if Ben recalled correctly), out to the province of Johto, which had its' own league.

Luckily for Ben, the southern end of Viridian City was not heavily urbanised. There were two large parks and the League Headquarters, with various Trainer facilities surrounding it. This meant that Ben didn't have much of a hard time finding the distinctive drum-shaped building of the Pokémon Centre on the eastern end of Headquarters Park. "Well, here we are," Ben said. Shock chattered something that Ben interpreted as a question. "This is a Pokémon Centre," Ben explained to his Pikachu. "There are all sorts of facilities here for Pokémon Trainers. Most importantly, they can provide rest and care for Pokémon who have been fighting hard; like you." Ben stroked the electric-type Pokémon's cheeks, making her purr appreciatively.

The automatic doors swung open with a pleasant 'ping' sound and Ben looked around the vast atrium. On the walls to either side were a series of strange, highly stylised murals of bird-like and dog-like Pokémon. This, he realised, were the Legendary Pokémon, the semi-mythical creatures said to be the living avatars of the natural forces. At the far end of the atrium was a reception desk and doors that led to the centre's other facilities, deeper in the building.

As it was Sunday lunchtime, there were only a few other trainers about. He saw two young boys of about his age talking urgently while their Pokémon, purple rabbit-like creatures, glared at each other. There was also a much older Trainer, a girl in her late teens, talking to someone on the videophones.

Ben walked up to the main desk and the sight of the strangest Pokémon that he had ever seen confronted him. Pale pink feathers covered its' body, and they ruffled off on the head to form 'ears'. It had a pouch on its' belly, where he could see an egg peeking out. Bizarrely, it had a little nurse's cap perched on its; head. "Chan-chan-cey!" the Pokémon said.

Shock, of course, understood the other Pokémon's words. "Pika-pi-chu! Kapi-ka-ka-chu-pi."

Ben looked up at his Pikachu feeling a bit left out. He wished that he understood her better so that he could figure out what she was saying to the nurse/Pokémon. Suddenly, a door behind the desk opened and a pretty woman with long red hair in braids stepped out into the atrium. Her nametag read 'Joy Quinn' and identified her as the Pokémon Centre's head nurse. It also bid Ben 'Have a Nice Day'. "Hello, young man, can I help you?" the woman asked in a kind, helpful tone.

"Er..." Ben stumbled over his words for a moment. He had never been good when talking to new people. "Yes," he said at last. "I've just come north from Pallet Town and my Pikachu was hurt on the way. I would like her healed, if that is possible."

"Of course," Joy said, smiling in a reassuring way. "If you will put her in her Pokéball, I will put her in rejuvenation at once!"

Ben pulled Shock's Pokéball off the clip on the back of his belt and noticed the way that Shock was looking at it. He could tell distaste when he saw it, even on the cute face of a Pokémon. "It will only be for a short while, Shock," he said. "Don't worry; I don't think that you'll miss much!"

Shock cocked her head in thought for a moment before deciding to trust her friend. She stood up straighter and let Ben recall her into the Pokéball. Nurse Joy took the ball and looked at it for a moment. "How is it that a youngster like you with only one Pokémon has one in a Super Ball?" She asked. "These cost over $50 in the Pokémarts!"

Ben shrugged and tried not to look embarrassed. "Well, the ball is Professor Oak's. He caught Shock in it and I suppose it came with her when he gave her to me."

"Professor Oak gave you this Pokémon?" Joy seemed surprised. "Well, that is quite an honour, young man. You ought to be proud!"

Ben blushed. Why was it that everyone he encountered seemed to think he was someone special. Was it because that two of the best Trainers of recent times, Gary Oak and Ash Ketchum, were former protégé's of Professor Oak's? He shook his head. He wasn't going to worry about it. He was a seventh-grader on a weekend excursion for a much-respected citizen of his hometown. There was nothing else to occupy his mind right now. Except for enjoying the distractions of Viridian City.

Suddenly something touched Ben's thoughts and he remembered that he had promised to call home. He walked over to the wall of videophones and sat down in front of the nearest one. He pulled out his citizen's ID card and slid it into the card slot next to the display screen. A graphic appeared on the screen, confirming Ben's identity and confirming the balance in his National Savings account. Ben dialled a seven-digit local number and waited for a few moments. Then he heard a familiar voice. "Four-one-four-six," his mother said. "Speaking?"

"Mom, it's me, Ben!" Ben replied. The imaged on the screen changed. It had been showing a graphic of a dancing Jigglypuff and the legend 'Audio Only Selected'. Now it changed to show Ben's mother. The black-haired woman was smiling happily at seeing her eldest child again.

"Ben!" Sue said. "It is good to see you, honey. How are you?"

Ben felt slightly embarrassed at his mother's enthusiasm, but he didn't let that get to him. After thirteen years, he was used to it, after all. "I'm just fine, mom," he said. "It's good to see you too."

"So, how was your trip?" Sue asked. "You weren't hurt were you?" Sue immediately noticed that her son's new Pokémon was not on his shoulder. "Shock wasn't hurt badly was she?"

"She had a nasty run-in with a Rattata," Ben said. "Don't worry though, I was able to heal her and the Head Nurse of the Pokémon Centre is healing her right now." Ben puffed up slightly in pride. "She is a lot stronger than she was when I first got her," he continued. "She's learnt a new move!"

"Ben, that's wonderful," Sue said with a proud smile. She wiped a nostalgic tear from her eye. "I am very proud of you doing so well when you are so young."

Ben blushed. "Mom," he protested. "I am thirteen now."

Sue smiled. You have no idea how young that is, she thought. "I'm still proud of you," she replied aloud.

"Trainer Russell-Gough?" Nurse Joy called out.

Ben looked at the Head Nurse and saw that she was holding Shock's Pokéball. He turned back to his mother. "I've got to go now, Mom," he said. "I'll see you tonight when I get back to town."

"Keep safe, Ben," Sue replied. Ben nodded and hung up.

Ben retrieved his ID card as the 'phone spat it out and then ran over to Nurse Joy. "Is my Pikachu okay?" he asked.

Joy smiled at the boy in a kindly way. "She is just fine, Ben," she said gently. "She is fighting fit again. I took the liberty to check her out and you will be interested to know that she has grown to Experience Level 6 since the Professor gave her to you. She is well on the way to Experience Level 7, in fact!"

Ben grinned slightly, pleased that his training of Shock had gone well. He took the Super Ball from Nurse Joy and activated it, releasing Shock. "Hey, Shock!" he said. "How are you doing, girl?"

"Pi-chu-kachu-chaaa!" Shock said with a broad grin. She leapt to Ben's shoulder and snuggled against his neck affectionately. She felt just great and seeing Ben again made her feel even better.

"Your Pikachu obviously loves you a lot," Nurse Joy said with a laugh. Ben blushed, partly in response to Nurse Joy's knowing look, but mainly in response to the way Shock settled in against his neck as if she had never known a more welcoming place to be.

"Er... Thank you, Nurse Joy," he managed to blurt out. "I've... er... got to go now."

~*~*~*~

The Viridian City main Pokémart was actually right next to the Pokémon Centre. With Shock riding on his shoulder, looking incredibly pleased with herself, he went over to complete his errand. The shop was quiet this Sunday afternoon, like most of Viridian City. From what Ben had seen, most of the day's activity was centred on the park where he had seen dozens of Trainers either training or battling. He was tempted to join them, but he only had Shock and she was still fairly inexperienced. He wasn't so headstrong or stupid enough to rush these things.

Instead, he went into the Pokémart and looked around. It was a fairly typical shop, with shelves and stacks of various Pokémon goods and pay points back near the entrance. However, Ben's errand didn't involve buying anything right now. Instead, he went to the back of the shop where there were several windows with the emblem of Kanto's General Post Office over them. Only one window was open and a very sleepy-looking guy was sitting in behind it, doodling on a legal pad. "Excuse me, sir?" Ben asked nervously.

The man looked up. "Yeah, son?" he asked.

"I'm here to collect a package for Professor Oak," Ben explained. The man looked sceptical (well, wouldn't you?), so Ben pulled out the chit that the Professor had given him and passed it underneath the window.

The man looked at it and 'hummed' for a moment. "Okay, this looks in order. Come over to the hatch." The man gestured to a glass hatchway in one corner of the building with two glass doors, one of the man's side, one on Ben's side. Ben walked over and watched as the man put a small package, about the size of a hardback book in through the door on the other side. He closed the door and Ben heard an electronic click before the door on his side popped open. Ben took the package and the door closed with an electronic whine. The man gestured for Ben to go back to the window.

After signing an official-looking form to confirm that he had picked up the package and that it was intact when he did so, Ben tucked the pack into his backpack. After a quick snack in the Pokémon Centre's cafeteria, it was time to go home.

Chapter 4 - And Back Again
Ben set off from Viridian City at about two o'clock in the afternoon. The sun was pleasantly warm and there was no hint of rain or cold weather in the air. Ben was in a good mood, but he had no interest in prolonging his journey right now. So instead of passing through the areas of tree cover and long grass, he took the riskier, but quicker and far more exciting option of clambering down the rocky ridges that bisected the route. They still ran into a single wild Pidgey, but Shock was able to dispatch the wild Pokémon with two Thundershock attacks.

After about an hour, Ben and Shock came across an isolated stand of odd-looking trees with highly symmetrical canopies. "I don't think I've seen those before," Ben said. He was about to continue when Shock jumped from his shoulder and began to tug at the leg of his jeans. "What is it, girl?" he asked.

"Chu-ka, Ka!" Shock said urgently, pointing at the trees. "Chu-chu-pi-chu!" Then she released Ben's leg and began to walk towards the trees, occasionally pausing, looking at him over her shoulder and then calling him loudly.

Mystified by Shock's behaviour, Ben followed his Pikachu up to the trees, keeping an eye out for wild Pokémon. Up close, the boy noticed the bushes growing around the base of the tree. There were red berries on the bush that seemed almost two good to be true. Without hesitation, Shock grabbed one of the berries and began to eat it with a blissful expression on her face. "Watch it, Shock! They may be poisonous!" Ben gasped worriedly.

Shock gave Ben a look of unutterable scorn and finished the berry with a determined expression. Then she picked another, clambered up Ben's arm and offered the boy the berry. Ben stared at the red fruit for a moment, looking extremely nervous. He remembered his mother's many lectures about eating wild fruits. Several berries, although palatable for animals and Pokémon, were poisonous to humans. Shock gave Ben a firm look that seemed to challenge the boy to trust her as she had trusted him. "Pi!" she commanded.

Ben swallowed nervously, but he realised that Shock was right to demand this of him. He put the berry into his mouth and bit down. The juice was sweet, but not sickly-sweet. As it ran down Ben's throat, he felt a rush of strength that made his limbs tingle. If this is the effect of a poison, I can recommend it, Ben thought. Ben looked at the smug Pikachu sitting on his shoulder and thought for a moment. She looks a bit stronger than she was before, he decided. It is as if she has recovered from the effects of the fight with that Pidgey. Ben came to a decision. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a plastic bag (in which his mother had wrapped some of his lunch) and picked a half-dozen berries, wrapping them carefully so that there was no possibility of their being crushed. Then he put them into his backpack.

Shock looked incredibly pleased with herself. She had successfully communicated with Ben! Then she started. She had thought of him using his given name rather than as 'The Human'! Well, maybe that was a good thing. With a pleased little cry of "Chaaa", she settled back against her friend's neck as he resumed his journey.

~*~*~*~

It took Ben and Shock only three hours to complete a journey that had taken them more like six hours in the other direction. The sun was just setting as Ben reached the area of tall grass that directly bordered the fence surrounding Pallet Town. Ben looked at the setting sun for a moment and decided that he would go to see Professor Oak and give him his package tomorrow. He had no doubt that his family would want him home as soon as possible.

As the two friends entered the tall grass, a blue-grey shape jumped towards Ben with a cry of "Rattata!"

Ben jumped back in surprise. "What the...? Shock! Go!"

"Pikaaa!" Shock cried, jumping from his shoulder and landing right in front of the rodent-like Pokémon.

The Rattata seemed surprised by the fact that a Pokémon was allying itself with the human. It paused and considered its' next move for a moment before lunging forwards with a loud battle-cry. "Shock, use Thundershock!" Ben commanded. The blue-white whiplash of electricity slammed into the Rattata mid air. It still struck Shock, but it was so badly stunned by the electrical attack that it tumbled off to one side after bouncing off of her. "Great shot, Shock," Ben said proudly. "Okay, now use Tail Whip!" Shock lunged forwards and slapped her thunderbolt-shaped tail across the Rattata's nose. The wild Pokémon staggered back in surprise. After a moment it charged again, but this time Shock easily avoided the charge. "Okay, finish it off with a Tackle!" Ben said. The impact sent the Rattata tumbling head-over-heels into the tall grass and both friends lost sight of it.

With an ecstatic cry, Shock leaped into Ben's arms. "Kachu-pi, Ka!" she giggled as Ben hugged her. She snuggled into her very best friend's arms and sighed happily. "Chaaa..."

"You are great, Shock," Ben said. "You are so brave and I love you." The Pikachu sighed, recognising the meaning if not the words and tried to cuddle closer to Ben's chest.

~*~*~*~

Sue looked up as the front door slammed open. Ben and Shock ran in, the Pikachu dancing around the boy's heels and giggling joyfully in her own language. Ben swept her up in his arms and hugged her. "Ben! You're back!" Sue ran over and hugged her son hard. The commotion attracted Ben's father and his sister, Cory.

"Hey! Tell me all about it, Bro!" Cory said. "How did you do? Is your Pikachu any stronger? What about Viridian City? Did you do anything exciting there?"

Ben laughed and tried to answer his six-year-old sister's questions as best as he could. He remembered the berries and asked his mother's permission to store them in the refrigerator. Then, the two friends enjoyed a late supper together.

Late that night, Ben virtually collapsed on his bed. Shock curled up beside his head, cooing happily. They were back home after a trip that, although short, had changed them both forever.

As Ben drifted off to sleep, he reached up and stroked Shock's warm, furry sides. Shock cooed and cuddled in closer to his head, enjoying the close proximity. My very own Pokémon, Ben thought.

My very own Human, Shock thought.

Both of them had very pleasant dreams that night.

Chapter 5 - Quest
Next morning, Ben and Shock were up bright and early. As school was in its' summer recess, Ben was able to plan the morning around his little friend and around completing his errand. After a filling breakfast, the two friends set off across the small town to the farmhouse-like complex of the Professor's laboratories.

Tracey answered the door and invited Ben in to the main research labs, as the Professor was too busy to be away from his work right now. The elder researcher looked up in surprise when he saw Ben enter with Shock riding on his shoulder. The Pikachu looked at the man who captured her suspiciously. "Ah! Ben!" Oak said in his usual airy tone. "It's good to see you. How is my old Pokémon doing?"

Ben unconsciously reached up to stroke Shock's face, something that made Oak smile slightly. "She is doing great, Professor," Ben said excitedly. "She is much stronger now and she has learnt a new move!"

"Really? Was it Tail Whip?" Ben nodded. Oak smiled. "I would expect that, but she would still need to have proper training to learn that so quickly. Well done, young man." Oak smiled more broadly when he saw Ben blush at receiving this praise. "If you don't mind, I would like to examine her. It is completely non-invasive and she won't feel a thing."

Ben looked at Shock, who seemed a bit worried. "Don't worry, Shock," he said. "You can trust the Professor." Shock seemed reluctant, but she let Ben place her on the metal table underneath what looked like a gigantic microscope. There was a whirring noise and a blue light shone down on Shock for a moment.

"Yes, this is interesting," Oak said as he looked at the monitor screen connected to the sensor. "She has earned just under 200 experience index points so far and is at Experience Level 7. Yes, you've done well, especially considering that you have only been her trainer for two days. However, it will take far longer to progress to higher experience levels." Oak turned to Shock and bowed respectfully. "Thank you for your co-operation, Lady Pikachu," he said. Shock looked surprised, but returned the bow before scampering up Ben's left arm back to his shoulder. "So, what can I do for you?" Oak asked, looking at Ben.

Ben's mouth dropped open in surprise. "I... er... got you your package, Professor," he said.

"My package?" Oak said, sounding surprised. "My goodness! I was so focussed on how you have been training your Pikachu that I quite forgot! How foolish of me!" Ben smiled nervously as he handed the package over to the researcher. The old man opened the cardboard box and smiled at what he saw. He pulled out a black-and-white Pokéball and showed it to Ben. "A Master-type Pokéball," he explained. "Look well, my young friend. I doubt that you will see the like ever again. They can catch any Pokémon, no matter how powerful, in one attempt. Quite amazing really."

Ben was going to ask why the professor wanted one of the powerful, hideously expensive and strictly-controlled Master Balls, but decided that it was none of his business. "Professor," he said, "I found some berries on Route 1. When Shock ate one, she seemed to be stronger. I've brought some with me. Can you tell me if they are safe? I'd hate Shock to be eating something poisonous or habit-forming."

Ben took out the bag of berries and saw the way that Shock's eyes lit up in glee. "Ah!" Oak said, leaning forwards. "Yes, I think I know what these are, but I'd better be sure. May I take one?" Ben nodded. Oak gingerly took one of the berries and ground it up in a pestle before pouring the juice and rind into a petri dish. He then put the dish into a cylindrical machine labelled 'Chem. Analyser'. The machine beeped for a moment before a screen-full of scientific information appeared on the monitor screen connected to it. "Yes, as I thought," Oak announced meditatively. "These, young Benjamin, are HP Berries. They contain high levels of vitamins and electrolytes. In many ways they are chemically similar to standard HP-Restore potion. Because of that, when a Pokémon eats one, they can restore their health to the tune of ten HP Index points." Oak walked over to a cupboard and opened it, taking out a jar of the berries. He put one in the bag, which Ben had left on his desk. "One to replace the one I analysed," he said kindly. "HP Berries are common in Johto, but I've never heard of anyone seeing Berry Bushes here in Kanto. You say you found them on Route 1?"

Ben nodded. "There is an isolated copse of trees just past the first ridge coming south from Viridian City," Ben said.

Oak nodded. "Yes, the Berry Bushes are parasitic to that particular species of tree. Wherever you will find those trees, you will find berries of one form or another. Each has different properties; You can usually identify them by their colour. Red and gold ones restore health, purple ones can cure paralysis and blue ones, when crushed and rubbed on the skin, cure burns. There are many other types."

The Professor turned away and opened a blank email form. "I'd better notify the League Commissioners," he said. "Those bushes are valuable. Registering it will mean it is marked on maps issued to Trainers. They will also be monitored so they are never picked clean." Oak pointed to the berries. "I'd have Shock carry one of those berries," Oak said. "She can eat it as soon as she has been weakened in battle, then she will get a health boost."

Ben nodded and offered the berry to Shock. "Just hold on to it for now, Shock," he said. "Keep it for when you really need it."

Shock looked at her Trainer for a moment in a puzzled fashion before chirping something cheerfully and putting it in her mouth. Ben uttered an annoyed exclamation at her apparent disobedience. Oak laughed. "Don't worry, Ben," he said. "Pikachus have pouches in their cheeks where they can store food for days or even weeks. She will keep it there until she needs it."

Ben smiled and stroked Shock's cheeks. "Sorry for doubting you," he said. Shock replied affectionately and clambered up to his shoulder again so she could snuggle in against his neck.

Oak watched this thoughtfully. He exchanged a significant glance with Tracey and his assistant nodded firmly. "Ben," Oak said. "I'm sure you have many things that you would like to do today, but I would be grateful if you could come to see me at 11 o'clock. I have a proposition for you." Ben looked up in some surprise. However, he could see that he wouldn't be able to get anything out of the Professor until the designated time had come, so he went his way with Shock cooing on his shoulder.

~*~*~*~

He was back at 11 o'clock, practically bursting with anticipation. He didn't know what the Professor wanted from him, but he couldn't wait to find out. He had heard enough innuendo, hints and strange ideas during his trip to Viridian City that it left him wondering if he had stumbled backwards into something much bigger than it initially seemed.

This time, he was met at the front door by Delia, who led him to the sitting room. He sat down and was very surprised when, a few minutes later, a crab-like Pokémon entered carrying a tray with a cup of green tea and a plate of cookies. Ben, feeling very weird, took the cup and the plate from the tray. "Kingler!" the Pokémon said. Ben stammered out what he hoped were appropriate words of thanks and watched as the creature clattered away on eight hard-tipped limbs.

About ten minutes later, the Professor entered the room. "Ah! Hello Ben," he said in a pleasant tone. He turned to Tracey. "Tracey, was the other... er... young man aware that he should meet with me here at this time?"

Tracey shrugged. "I told him, Professor," the Professor's assistant said. "But you know what he is like."

"Unfortunately, yes," Oak said, rolling his eyes. Suddenly the doorbell rang. Oak smiled. "I expect that he has just arrived," he said with a smile. "He strikes me as being the sort of person who is never on time for a party."

Ben blinked. "You are throwing a party?" he asked helplessly. Oak didn't reply as he and Tracey had already left to answer the door.

A few moments later, an unpleasantly familiar face appeared at the living room door. Adam Bryant scowled at Ben for a few moments with the clear unspoken question 'What is he doing here?' hanging in the air. Professor Oak gestured to one of the easy chairs and Adam sat down, shifting a little uncomfortably in the homely setting of the Research Centre's living area.

"I'm sure you are both wondering what you are doing here on a sunny day," Professor Oak said. "Well, I have a task that needs doing that I think you will both find interesting and rewarding." Adam opened his mouth, probably to say that he wasn't Oak's assistant and he could stick his 'task' in a dark place. Oak didn't give him a chance to even begin. He just went right on with his exposition. "As you know, there are over 300 species of Pokémon known. Many are found virtually everywhere on these islands, Rattata and Pidgey especially. However, some are only found in a few places. Every five years, the UN Governing Council has the islands' Pokémon Researchers survey the islands to determine what species are found in what areas."

Oak looked at the antique and priceless hand-drawn map of Kanto, Johto and Orange on the wall for a moment before turning back to the two boys. "The time for the latest survey has come. Unfortunately, I'm just too old to go out chasing all over the continent on a job like this. Ash and Gary used to help me, but they are both men now, with families and responsibilities and I can't ask them."

"Professor, what is this about?" Adam snapped.

Oak smiled at the ash-blond-haired boy in a way that conveyed no warmth whatsoever. "I have heard many good reports about you both," he said. "You have both proved capable Trainers of the Pokémon that I gave to you. Because of that, I would like you to assist me in this great task. Finding out the location of every one of the Pokémon here in Kanto is a difficult and dangerous task that will require great skill and ability. I would like you two to go out and perform the survey for me. In exchange, I will provide you with the equipment and supplies that you need to start on your Journey."

There was a long pause. The two boys looked at each other in a puzzled fashion. Ben had no doubt that Adam could see his nervousness. He could see it in the other boy's eyes too, although he was making a valiant effort to hide it. "Professor," Ben said. "I don't know about Bryant here, but I will be glad to help you out." After all, who could possibly decline such an offer?

Adam scowled. He would be damned if the wimp showed more courage than he showed. "I'm in too," he said. He smirked at Ben. "Gough, I don't mean to sound harsh, but you really don't need to bother. I don't need your help, and I don't think you would be much help anyway."

Ben scowled and Shock hissed dangerously. Before either could say or do anything, Oak stepped forwards. "You are both going," he said firmly. "This opportunity is open to you both whether the other is interested or not." When he was certain that the two boys were looking at him again, he relaxed. The intense dislike between the two surprised him. In many ways, it reminded him of his relationship with Giovanni diRocketti (or 'Blue' as he had called him back then), and Ash's relationship with Gary when they were both a lot younger. "I will provide you with a Pokédex and a basic Pokémon medical kit as well as some other odds and ends that I think you will find useful. Boys, this is an important work in the field of Pokémon biology and your contributions will be remembered."

Adam stood up and posed importantly. "I will, of course, perform to the best of my vast abilities," he said. He scowled at the way Ben was grinning at him. Somehow everything the other boy did offended him. It had been that way since elementary school. "Here is a clue, wimp: Stay out of my way."

"Adam, if I never saw you again, it would still be too soon," Ben said.

"Big talk for someone with one weak Pokémon," Adam sneered. He turned back to the Professor. "Professor, I would like to get underway as soon as possible."

Oak smiled. "I'm sure that you do, Mr. Bryant." He handed Adam what looked like a red palmtop computer or PDA. "The Mk3a Pokédex," Oak said. "The most advanced model yet with fully interactive AI and several new functions. This includes active scanning for when you encounter an unknown species, an uplink system so that any information is immediately uploaded to my central system and also updates can be downloaded to your Pokédex without delay. There is also more information regarding the locations you will pass through on your journey." Adam took it at once and attached it to a clip on his belt. "Tracey will give you the rest of your equipment on the way out," Oak said. "Consider it yours from now on and treat it as such."

Adam smirked, nodded once to the Professor and walked out, ignoring Ben completely.

Oak looked at Ben. "What about you, Ben?" he asked.

"I'm in no hurry," Ben said. "My father taught me that rushing into something leads to mistakes."

Oak laughed. "Yes, it does. I found that out during my journey."

Ben was surprised. It was difficult for him to imagine Oak as anything but the serious, sober researcher. The thought of the Professor as a young man running around the country was a profound shock. "You went on a Pokémon Journey?" he blurted.

"Oh yes," he said. "Me, my first wife, Virginia, and my best friend started our journeys together… oh, it must have been forty years ago now. I was known as 'Red' back then. Ginny was 'Green' and Giovanni…" Professor Oak paused and Ben noticed a slight sadness in his eyes. "Giovanni was 'Blue'."

Giovanni? Ben thought, aghast. There was only one famous trainer he knew of with that name, and he was the disgraced and imprisoned former leader of the terrorist organisation Team Rocket. And he was once Professor Oak's friend?

Oak grinned. "So, there we were, me with Charmander, Ginny with Bulbasaur and Gio with Squirtle, standing in front of that stile. We were the best of friends, ready to take on the whole world sure that we would be together forever." The researcher sighed. "It all seems so very, very long ago." He sat down opposite Ben and looked into the boy's eyes. "Whatever you do and wherever you go, Ben, always remember one thing. Keep your friends close and never let them go. Even if they don't want to be your friend anymore." The researcher gave Ben a Pokédex. "You are about to start on the path to manhood, Ben. You will return here in just over a year's time, I expect, but it will only be a beginning. By the time your journey is truly over, you will have changed forever. Do you still want to do this?"

Ben closed his mouth, which had been hanging open in amazement. "Yes I do," he said. "Training Pokémon has always been my dream."

"Then I wish you well on your journey, Brother Trainer," Professor Oak said with a gentle smile.

As he left the living room, Tracey walked up to Ben. "Ben, the Professor asked me to give you your equipment," the black-haired man said. First he handed Ben a belt pouch. "This contains six standard-type Pokéballs," Tracey said. "Use them to capture any Pokémon that you want, but remember that they only work if the Pokémon is below a certain strength level. Any higher and you will have to weaken it first. Also, the Pokéball will not capture a Pokémon that has fainted because they are too weak to survive the digitisation process." Ben nodded to show that he understood. Tracey next gave him a pouch marked with a medical caduceus. "And this is a medical pouch. It contains a bottle of HP-Restore Potion, a tube of antiseptic cream and four doses of General Antidote for Poison-type venom."

Ben nodded his thanks. "Thanks, Mr. Sketchitt," he said. "I should be going now..."

"Hold on," Tracey replied. There was a clatter of footsteps and Tracey's fiancée, Professor Oak's granddaughter, May, ran down the stairs from the second storey of the building with a cream-coloured fox-like Pokémon hard on her heels.

"I found them," May said. "Grandpa had left them in their shipping carton at the back of the attic." She handed Ben what looked like a small hand-held game. "An Auto-Map of Kanto," she said. "It shows all the major routes, towns and sites of interest." She had another Auto-Map in her hand. "Hey, I thought Grandpa said there were two Trainers starting off today?"

Tracey grinned carnivorously. "Mr. Bryant was in too much of a hurry to wait for his map," he said. He turned and shook Ben's hand. "Good fortune to you, Trainer Russell-Gough," he said. "I wish you well."

"As do I," said May. She leaned forwards and kissed Ben gently on the cheek. Shock growled dangerously and May smiled a little. "Someone is getting jealous," she said teasingly. Ben blushed again. Shock had been acting possessive all day! What was wrong with her?

~*~*~*~

Granville Russell-Gough sighed. "Ben, I won't say that I am happy," he said, "but this is your decision. You are of age now, as you know, so you can make your own decisions."

"Dad, I'm not running away," Ben said with a lop-sided smile. "I'm just doing another errand for Professor Oak. I'll be back in just a year and I'll probably be better off for the journey."

Ben's father smiled. "I'm sure that you will be," he said. "It won't be easy or safe, but I know that you will be equal to anything that you encounter. I'm very proud of you, son." Ben blushed as his father squeezed his shoulder firmly. "You don't have to rush off do you?" the man continued, sounding a bit wistful.

"No," Ben said with a slight smile. "I'm leaving tomorrow. There is no sense racing about. I'll get to Viridian City by midday tomorrow if I start in the morning. If I start now, I won't get there until after dark." Ben didn't say it, but he didn't feel brave enough to travel at night just yet. "Besides, who would want to miss mom's cooking unless he had to?" Ben's father laughed, but there was a little sadness in his voice.

~*~*~*~

The parting with Cory was the most painful for Ben, but he promised his beloved baby sister that he would write to her regularly and speak to her by videophone from every Pokémon Centre that he visited. The small family stood at the end of the garden path to wave as Ben set off. The boy was wearing tough-weave blue jeans, a red polo shirt and a hip-length khaki coat with lots of pockets. His backpack carried some changes of clothes and the equipment and supplies that he would need for the first leg of his journey. Ben put his wide-brimmed hat on his head and waved at his family once again. "I'll see you guys," he said.

"Take care, darling!" Sue called.

"You keep safe, Bro!" Cory added. His father simply waved and smiled reassuringly.

With a deep sigh, Ben turned and walked away, suddenly feeling very alone. Shock sensed this and rubbed herself against his cheek, cooing reassuringly. Ben understood what that meant at once, of course. So long as he had his first Pokémon with him, he would never truly be alone.

Within a few minutes, the boy stood before the stile gate that led to Route 1, ready to begin his Pokémon Journey.

Book 2 - In the Beginning
Chapter 1 - Building a Team
Ben, with a grinning Shock riding on his shoulder, waded into the long grass of Route 1. This particular part of the wild held no terrors for them. Shock was born here, after all, and Ben had crossed this barrier twice with her help. So it was with the attitude of a seasoned team that they pushed forwards. The first action came within minutes. A wild Pidgey dived out of the grass and right at Ben with an enraged shriek.

Ben, who was as psyched up as he would ever be, responded immediately. "Shock! Thundershock attack!" Shock leapt from her friend's shoulder with a loud battle-cry and lashed out with her electrical power. The Pidgey shrieked and dropped from sight. Ben charged towards the spot where the Pidgey had crash-landed, reaching into his pouch for a Pokéball. When he reached the spot, an excited Shock at his side, he saw that there was no point even trying to capture the creature. The Pokémon had fainted. "Nuts," he said and put the Pokéball back in its' pouch.

Shock settled herself onto Ben's left shoulder and he reached up to tickle her. "You're a little too strong for capturing a weak wild Pidgey now, Shock," he said. Shock said something in a mournful tone and Ben guessed her meaning. "No, you haven't done anything wrong. I want you to be strong. I'll just have to figure something else out."

Ben thought for a moment and then unholstered his Pokédex. He flipped the device open and called up the file on Route 1.

"Route 1," the computer announced in its' cheery, digitally-sampled voice. "Route 1 is the main hiking route taken by trainers from Pallet Town to Viridian City. It has no real features of interest to Trainers, although a Berry Bush has recently been located at the northern end of the route, approximately two miles south of Viridian City and four miles east of the River Viridian. Route 1 is bisected by a number of rocky ridges and it is necessary for north-bound Trainers to find areas of landslides to cross these ridges.

"Route 1 is too close to the Viridian City conurbation to have many wild Pokémon present. However, Trainers will encounter Pidgey, Rattata and Spearow here. At night, you will likely encounter Noctowl and possibly wild Eevee."

Ben looked at the map of Route 1, showing the location of the Berry Bush and his own location (thanks to the miracle of GPS). "I have to catch a Rattata," he said at last. "Your electrical attacks have become so strong, Shock, that you can knock a Pidgey out with a single attack. I'll bet that you can do the same to Spearows. Eevees are very rare, and I don't want to be out here at night anyway." Ben switched the Pokédex over to its' scanning mode and checked the information that it held about Shock. "Your physical attacks aren't as strong, but they aren't strong enough to weaken a Pidgey enough to capture, I'll bet. I don't want you hurt just so that I can catch a new Pokémon."

Shock looked at her trainer and smiled. "Chu-ka-pi-chu-pi, Ka," she said. Ben was sure that he heard, in the back of his head, [I trust you]. He smiled and stroked Shock's face again.

~*~*~*~

The two friends continued north. Ben had just climbed the first ridge and entered another patch of long grass, this one near the river. They had been busy. Shock had swatted aside another Pidgey easily enough, but they hadn't seen a Rattata. Then, just as they reached the edge of the grass, Ben thought he saw something by the river's edge.

Ben crouched down, using the grass as cover, and pulled out his Pokédex. He pointed it at the Rattata and pressed the 'identify' button. He wanted to be completely sure. "Pokémon [HASHTAG]#019[/HASHTAG] - Rattata, the Rat Pokémon," the Pokédex announced. "Rattata is a member of the normal-type of Pokémon, basically more intelligent versions of animals in other branches of the animal kingdom. Rattata are omnivores and can be found in all parts of Pokémon Island. They are capable of eating virtually anything, but respond best to care and high-quality foodstuffs such as Slate Corporation Pokémeals.

"The Rattata is extremely common, and many Trainers scorn it because of this. However, Rattata is also a powerful and tenacious fighter when properly trained, learning a large number of normal-type skills. Additionally, Rattata is compatible with a large number of Technical Machines, especially those of the earth-type. When taught earth-type or ground-type moves, Rattata is a match for Pokémon many times its' size and strength
.

"At Experience Level 20, Rattata evolves into Raticate."

"Okay," Ben said. "This is it. Are you ready, Shock?" Ben grinned. She was ready alright. The Pikachu was virtually trembling with anticipation as she sensed her Trainer's excitement. "Okay, get ready. Use Thundershock!"

"Pikaaa!" Shock leapt from Ben's shoulder and unleashed a massive whiplash of electricity. The Rattata was blown onto its' side. Ben pulled out a Pokéball and watched as the normal-type Pokémon staggered to its' feet and stared dangerously at the Pikachu.

No, he thought. It's still too strong. Suddenly, the Rattata leapt forwards and slapped its' tail over Shock's snout, making her reel back with a cry of surprise. Ben briefly considered asking Shock to use Growl, but that would needlessly prolong the battle. "Shock, use Tackle!"

Shock shoulder-charged the Rattata, sending it tumbling across the ground. It rolled to a stop and tried to stagger to its' feet. Now, he decided. He squeezed the Pokéball, making it quadruple in size, and pressed the three buttons on its' side until it buzzed, signifying that it was on 'capture mode'. The Rattata had just tried to use Tackle on Shock, but in it's weakened state, she had no trouble avoiding the attack. Ben took the opportunity to throw the Pokéball right at the wild Pokémon. "Pokéball, go!"

The ball struck the Rattata, which was staggering around slowly, trying to line up on Shock for another attack. The Pokémon suddenly turned into white light, as the ball split open. The light was sucked into the ball's interior and it snapped shut. Ben watched as the trap began to rock back and forth as red lights flared around the edge of the recall lens. "Come on... come on..." Ben muttered to himself. Then the ball stopped twitching, the lights changed to green and the Pokéball gave out a pleasant 'ping'. Ben was too startled to move for a moment, then he swept Shock off of her feet. "You did it, Shock!" Ben cried. "I've caught a wild Pokémon! Woohoo!"

Shock laughed in response and hugged Ben's face. Ben picked up the Pokéball (which was slightly warm to the touch), and held it up. "Yes!" he declared. "I've caught a Rattata!"

~*~*~*~

After Ben had come down from his triumph (and that took a while), he decided that he should introduce himself to his new Pokémon. This was one thing that he had no real clue about. How did you make a wild Pokémon want to stay with you? He still wasn't sure how he had managed it with Shock!

Still, with his Pikachu standing by in case of problems, Ben released the Rattata from its' Pokéball. It was still weak from the battle and looked up at Ben fearfully. "Hello, Rattata," he said. "I'm Ben. Don't worry, I'm not about to hurt you or anything." The Pokémon looked at him in interest. "You were hurt in that battle. If you want, I can help you."

The Rattata didn't understand what the human was saying, but it was curious as to why he had not finished the job that the Pikachu had begun. Ben slowly reached forwards. The Rattata snarled and Ben froze. "I won't hurt you," Ben repeated. He kept his hand in the Rattata's field of view at all times and gently reached underneath it so he could lift it up. The Rattata looked scared, but as it wasn't being hurt any more than it already was, it didn't know how to react.

Ben already had a dose of Potion ready. He lifted it towards the Rattata and let it sniff the pale blue fluid. The potion had been prepared to smell inviting to most kinds of Pokémon, so the Rattata did not object when the human tipped the dose cup forwards and began to pour the fluid into its' mouth. Rattata immediately felt 100% better and thrashed a little in Ben's hands. Ben held on tight. "Rattata, don't struggle, I want to talk to you first."

The Pokémon froze and looked at the human curiously. Ben put the Rattata down and knelt before it. "Rat-at-at-rat-ta?" it asked. It didn't have a clue what was happening.

Ben guessed what the question was. "I helped you because I want to train you," Ben said. "I want to make you stronger as you travel with me. Do you want that?" The Rattata cocked its' head and looked at Ben in some confusion. "If you don't want to, you can go now," Ben said, feeling brave for having to do so. The Pokémon just sat there, looking at him. Ben reached out with his hand and the Rattata sniffed it once and then touched his nose to the very tip of Ben's fingers. "I guess that means you want to stay," Ben said. He reached forwards and began to stroke the Rattata's back. Its' eyes closed in pleasure and it began to almost purr. Ben grinned. He had done it!

~*~*~*~

Ben had just finished scanning his new Rattata. According to the Pokédex, his new friend, serial number BRG-0002, was a male Rattata of Experience Level 5. He knew Tackle, Tail Whip and Scary Face, a strange move that tended to slow the reaction times of its' opponents. Ben was currently teaching Rattata to understand what were the human names for its' skills. "Rattata, would you like a nickname?" he asked. The Pokémon looked at him in surprise. "I don't want to call you just 'Rattata'. That sounds stupid. How would you like to be called…" Ben trailed off, his mind blank.

Recognising the confusion in his Trainer's eyes, Rattata grinned at the human. That gave Ben an idea. The Pokémon had buck teeth so... "How would you like to be called 'Buck'?" Ben asked. Rattata seemed to look inwards for a moment. "How about it? Use Tail Whip on my backpack, Buck!" With a squeak, Buck shot forward and performed the requested move. Ben smiled, and Buck grinned back toothily.

The two new friends sat down together, Shock watching the Rattata's every move from Ben's shoulder. Ben reached into his backpack and pulled out the jar of berries that he had picked on Sunday. "Okay, Buck, I've got something for you." The Rattata's eyes lit up when he saw the fruit, and when Ben pulled one out of the jar, he almost jumped for joy.

"Ta-ta!" Buck cried. Ben figured that this meant 'Food!' Buck jumped forwards and almost snapped the HP Berry from Ben's hand. Ben snatched it back and held his finger up to the normal-type's nose. "This isn't for now but later," he said. "Can you hold on to this for me?" Buck looked surprised. "Shock has cheek pouches," Ben said patiently. How about you?" Ben touched his right cheek and pulled it to mime a space. Buck seemed to go 'ah!' in understanding. More slowly, he took the berry from Ben's hand and put it in his cheek pouch. "That's right, pal," Ben said, stroking the Pokémon's back. Buck grinned smugly. He was still grinning when Ben recalled him to his Pokéball and slid it onto one of the five unused clips on his belt.

"Pi-chu-kapi-kapi, Ka," Shock said in a snobbish tone of voice.

Ben laughed and stroked her face. "Don't worry, Shock," he said. "You're still my favourite." Shock cooed in response and settled in against Ben's neck.

~*~*~*~

Ben and his expanding team were still heading north. He had just climbed the second ridge and had left another Trainer, this one heading south to Pallet. The two young people had spoken briefly, but the other Trainer wasn't interested in a Battle, something that Ben was pleased to hear. He had just walked under a copse of trees when a Spearow darted right at his face.

Ben had briefly thought of trying to capture the bird-like Pokémon, but he revised his plan when the Spearow was joined by about a dozen of its' kin. Ben and Shock took refuge in a bush while the shrieking flying-type Pokémon tried to find a way to get at them. Shock picked one off with a Thundershock, but more took its' place. Realising that it was hopeless, they just lay low. Both human and Pokémon were most relieved when the birds, bored by the fact that they couldn't get at the human, flew off after two hours of tearing at the twigs and leaves. "That was a close one," Ben said.

"Pi!" Shock agreed. The Angry-Beaks (as she thought of them) had been unexpectedly vicious, as if they were angry at something. It wasn't just Ben's presence. They had attacked her with just as much venom, if not more. She wondered if they were attacking her because she was with Ben. She shook her head. This was too much for her to consider right now. Suddenly, Shock blinked. Ben had stopped moving. What was wrong?

Ben was staring at the flying-type sitting in front of him at the base of a tree. It looked like a Pidgey, but he wasn't going to assume anything after being mobbed by those Spearows. He pulled out his Pokédex and asked it to identify the Pokémon. Much to his surprise, the flying-type did not respond to the Pokédex's cheerful voice as it spoke.

"Pokémon [HASHTAG]#016[/HASHTAG] - Pidgey, the Tiny Bird Pokémon," the Pokédex announced. "Pidgey is a member of the flying-type with a secondary alliance to the normal-type. Pidgeys are not aggressive Pokémon, preferring to attempt to escape a confrontation using defensive moves like Sand-Attack and Whirlwind. Because of their passive natures, Pidgey are ideal Pokémon for starting Trainers.

"Pidgey learn a large number of strong flying- and normal-type attacks. Their evolved forms are amongst the largest flying-types and are compatible with Hidden Machine #02 - Fly.

"At experience level 18, Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto. In turn, at Experience Level 36, Pidgeotto evolves into Pidgeot, the largest member of the flying-type."

Ben nodded. "Okay, here we go again," he murmured. Shock tensed. "Not you this time Shock," he added quietly. "You will beat it too easily." He pulled the recently filled red-and-white standard-type Pokéball from his belt and touched the 'release' control before throwing it forwards. "Buck, I choose you!"

Ben's Rattata materialised right in front of the surprised Pidgey and the two Pokémon looked at each other in some confusion. Ben nodded. "Okay, Buck, use Tackle!" Buck jumped forwards and shoulder-charged the flying-type, knocking it over. The Pidgey immediately took to the air and suddenly directed a powerful gust of wind at Buck by flapping its' wings extra-fast. Ben's Pokémon uttered a despairing cry and tumbled end-over-end several paces. Ben winced. "Be careful, Buck!" he shouted. "Use Tail Whip!" Buck flashed forwards, scaling the tree beside the Pidgey in an instant. He leapt into the air and athletically twisted his body to slap his prehensile tail across the bird's snout several times before landing again. The Pidgey was so shocked that it fell to the ground.

The two Pokémon regarded each other levelly. Suddenly, the Pidgey lanced forwards and slammed into Buck, knocking him over again. Buck rolled to a halt at Ben's feet and seemed beaten for a moment. Then Ben saw the rat-like Pokémon swallow and figured that he had eaten the berry. "Use Tackle again, Buck," Ben commanded. Buck shot forwards again and knocked the Pidgey out of the sky with his shoulder-charge. The flying-type struck the tree trunk and fell at the base of the tree, unconscious.

Ben bit down an angry exclamation. Obviously the Tail Whip had weakened the Pidgey to the point where another tackle was enough to make it faint. He didn't say anything because Buck had been hurt in the battle and he didn't want his newest Pokémon to feel bad. After all, all he had done was follow Ben's commands, so it was the Trainer's fault that the attempted capture fell through. Instead he stroked the Rattata's nose. "You did well, Buck," he said. "You've won your first Battle. Congratulations!"

"Rat-at- atta!" Buck said smugly as Ben gave him another Berry to replace the last.

~*~*~*~

The team was travelling north again. They had encountered another Rattata, which Shock had handled easily. Ben decided to train her in the use of Thunder Wave, a move that she should learn at Experience Level 8, according to the Pokédex. Much to his surprise, as soon as he had got her used to the sensations of creating the rippling wall of electricity that induced paralysis in its' victims, she seemed to be able to produce it on demand. Ben checked and, yes, she had indeed reached lv.8.

I wonder if they can instinctively use any of their skills as soon as they pass the right skill level, Ben wondered. Then he decided that he was being silly. Shock's experience had made it possible to learn what he taught her, nothing more. "You are getting stronger all the time, Shock," Ben said, tickling his friend's cheeks.

"Chaaa!" she replied happily.

Shortly after climbing the penultimate ridge, Ben and Shock entered another patch of long grass, growing near the edge of the ridge. Ben was getting used to the possibility of attack by wild Pokémon by now, so he wasn't particularly shocked by the sudden appearance of an angry Pidgey. "Gee!" it screeched. Ben released Buck and ordered him to use Tail Whip. The surprised flying-type reeled back before recovering enough to attempt to use Tackle on Buck. The Rattata was ready this time and dodged the attack, then, at Ben's command, he tackled the Pidgey, knocking it onto its' back. When Ben saw that the Pidgey was struggling to get up, he didn't hesitate but threw a Pokéball. The trap operated exactly as advertised and captured the Pidgey with barely a twitch of protest.

Ben, his confidence greatly improved, used another valuable dose of potion on the Pidgey, who seemed shocked to be alive. Ben's Pokédex confirmed that the Pidgey was a female of Experience Level 4, who knew Tackle and Sand-Attack. "How would you like to see the world with me, Pidgey?" he asked.

The Pidgey turned to leave, but then looked over her shoulder at Ben. She considered the sight of the Pikachu sitting on his shoulder and chirped thoughtfully. Finally she turned back to face the human. "Pi-pi-gey?" she chirped in an interrogative tone.

"Pidgey, I promise to look after you and help you become stronger," Ben said. "Do you want to come with me? I won't force you!"

Shock rolled her eyes cynically. However, Pidgey seemed to take Ben's words seriously. She soared into the air, circled the human once before landing on his outstretched arm. "Gey," she chirped and nudged his fingers.

Ben grinned. He couldn't believe it! When Pidgey took off he had thought she was going to run off for a moment, and he would have hated to have to pull her back with her Pokéball. That would ruin whatever sense of trust existed between them. "Okay, how would you like to be called 'Avia," Ben asked. "It is a word in a human language that means 'Bird'." Pidgey cocked her head a few times and then chirped smugly, looking happy. Ben decided that this was acceptance. "Avia it is, then," he said and stroked the bird's sensitive chest feathers. "Now, I think that I am going to have to explain to you how we should can work together. I know that you can fight, but I have to teach you my words for your attacks."

Avia cocked her head to listen. [This is interesting,] she said to Shock, who smiled and cooed encouragingly, to Ben or to her, the Pidgey never decided. As she got to know Shock better, however, she truly wondered.

~*~*~*~

Ben stopped by the Berry Bush and looked in wonder at the changes that had taken place in just two days. There was now a sign on a frame shaped like an inverted metal 'U'. "Trainer's Tip," Ben read, a little disbelievingly. He had heard of these, but he never expected to see one, expecting that it was just a crazy myth, a legend of the roads. "Have Pokémon carry berries to heal themselves in battle. Pick only three in any one visit!"

Just in case anyone was inclined to disobey, the area was rather unsubtly seeded with sensors and even a closed-circuit camera with a night vision lens on a pole a few yards from the trees. Obviously the League took the protection of Berry Bushes seriously.

Ben shrugged and picked the three berries that he was allowed to have this visit and put them in the airtight glass jar that he was using to store all the berries that he had picked so far. The jar was like a thermos flask and would stop the fruits from rotting too quickly. He also took the opportunity to give one to Avia. She had been hurt quite badly in a battle with one of her wild kin. She had emerged the winner, but only barely. Ben had given her a dose of potion after the battle as she had lost all the benefit from the berry.

While they were in the clearing near the trees and bushes, Ben called a halt for lunch. As he ate the food his mother had prepared for him he realised, with some melancholy, that this was the last meal of hers that he would eat for some time. After finishing feeding and watering his friends, Ben decided to spend some time training with Buck and Avia, teaching them how to use Tackle more accurately.

As Ben was otherwise occupied, Shock decided to look at the bushes that her dam had shown her when she was still a mere Pichu. She looked around at all the human artefacts in some surprise and wondered precisely what they were all supposed to do. She shook her head. She would never understand the two-legged apes if she lived to be fifty. She ran over to Ben as he turned to leave the copse of trees and leapt to his shoulder.

~*~*~*~

The next action came swiftly as a Pidgey shot out of the branches of a young tree when Ben nudged it in passing. Ben immediately released Avia. This time, he decided to be more careful and started with a Sand-Attack that nearly blinded the wild Pokémon and made it miss with its' opening tackle. "Okay, use Tackle, Avia!" Ben commanded.

"Gee!" Avia chirped excitedly and slammed into her wild cousin, knocking it end-over-end. The bird-like Pokémon staggered upright.

"And again!" Ben shouted. This time the wild Pokémon was knocked into the undergrowth and didn't reappear. Ben was quick to congratulate Avia and even Shock unbent enough to acknowledge her victory.

Ben had his suspicions, and they were proven when he scanned an innocently-confused Avia. She had reached Experience Level 5. "Okay, Avia," he said. "I'm going to teach you how to use Gust. Would you like that?" Avia cocked her head in confusion. "It is a special move that lets you use the air you move as you flap your wings as a weapon. Hover and I'll explain how."

Avia quickly mastered the move, and was quick to demonstrate it on trees and bushes. That is how the team flushed out a big and tough-looking Rattata. If Shock hadn't used Thunder Wave on the outset in response to some instinct, Ben was sure that she would have been seriously hurt. As it was, she was nursing a nasty set of bruises on her ribs at the conclusion of the battle. Ben rubbed on some antiseptic/anaesthetic cream, but his Pokédex assured him that Shock's health hadn't been seriously impaired. Indeed, her HP was hovering around the 85% level. Hardly worth worrying about. "Are you okay, Shock?" Ben asked. "I can give you some potion if you like." Technically, that would be a waste, but this was his friend. Ben had come to appreciate Shock over the last few days, and he was slowly coming to appreciate Buck and Avia too. They were his friends and deserved consideration.

Shock grinned at Ben and stood on her hind legs. "Chu-pika, Ka," she said. [I'm fine, don't worry,] Ben heard in his head, clearly this time. He grinned and tickled her as soon as she had clambered back onto his shoulder.

To be continued...

Ben's Journey
A Novel based on my Pokémon Yellow adventure

Book 2 - In the Beginning
Chapter 2 - First Stop
"Viridian City," Ben announced for Shock's benefit as he stood at the top of the slight rise before Route 1 entered the city. "I can't believe that it has only been two days since I was here last!" Shock cooed something in a reassuring tone of voice as her friend pulled on the straps of his backpack to settle it more firmly on his shoulder. Then he started walking into the city.

This Tuesday morning, there was a lot more activity on the streets. People were going about their business and Ben was surrounded by the bustle of the big city. It took all of the trust he had built up with Shock to stop her from starting to lash out at the crowds of humans. There were more Trainers around too. Ben saw a couple, who looked in their early 20's, sitting by a fountain. They were looking into each other's eyes in an odd way that Ben associated with boyfriend/girlfriend pairs. Previously seeing couples making 'gooey eyes' had disgusted him, but now it just made him feel odd for reasons that he couldn't quite decide upon.

He decided to avoid that tough question by focussing on their Pokémon. They were about the size of moderate-sized dogs. One was purple and the other was navy blue. The two creatures had double rows of bony plates sticking out of their backs and small horns sticking out from between their eyes. Ben pulled out his Pokédex and scanned them. The Pokédex identified them as 'Nidorino' and 'Nidorina', the evolved forms of the two genders of Nidoran. Ben closed his Pokédex, wondering if the presence of those Pokémon meant that wild Nidoran lived in this area. Ben looked at the two poison-type Pokémon closely and laughed. Nidorino was looking at Nidorina in exactly the way that his trainer was looking at hers. Like Pokémon, like Trainer, Ben thought, recalling the creed amongst Trainers that Pokémon tended to reflect elements of their Trainers' personality. Ben looked at Shock, who was looking around her absently. He wondered if she would copy elements of his personality, and if so what it would be.

Ben reached the Pokémon Centre about ten minutes later. Today, it was much busier. There were at least a dozen Trainers sitting around in the atrium and Ben saw two exchanging Pokéballs, having just traded Pokémon. That was another thing that Ben couldn't understand. After the amount of time and effort he had taken convincing Avia and Buck to stay with him, he doubted that he could ever let them go like that, no matter what was on offer.

Ben strode up to the front desk, trying to look casual and at ease amongst so many other Trainers (and failing). Nurse Joy was there and looked up with a smile when she saw Ben. "Ah! Trainer Russell-Gough," she said. "How are you today?"

"I'm fine, Nurse Joy," Ben said as he recalled Shock to her Pokéball. "Could you heal my Pokémon please?" The Head Nurse nodded her agreement and her smile went up a few notches when Ben pulled out two new Pokéballs and placed them beside Shock's Super Ball.

"Been busy, Ben?" she asked casually.

Ben shrugged, blushing slightly. "Professor Oak was kind enough to give me some Pokéballs, so I am trying to find more Pokémon to fill in the gaps in my team," he said, sounding embarrassed. Joy nodded in a knowing way that made Ben's blush grow worse. She settled the three Pokéballs on a four-by-four rack and went through the swing doors into the treatment rooms. Over the door, a sign marked with the shape of a syringe lit up red.

Ben sighed and turned away. He decided to wait in the atrium. As he sat there, thinking about nothing in particular, another Trainer (a black-haired boy about his age or a little older, wearing a red sports jacket and baseball cap) approached him. "Hey! Is that the new model 3 Pokédex?" he asked. "I didn't think that they were available yet!"

Ben looked up and blinked. Should he admit it? He couldn't think of a coherent reason why not. "Yeah," he said. "Professor Oak gave me this prototype because he wants to know what Pokémon I see as I travel around." The other trainer nodded and went 'ah' in comprehension. "My name's Ben, by the way."

"Taylor Gold," the boy replied, sticking out his hand. "I hale from New Bark Town in Johto. I guess that you are from Pallet Town?" Ben nodded. "Professor Oak knows Professor Elm, who works in New Bark Town, so I've seen him occasionally. What Pokémon do you have?"

Ben noted that the other Trainer had six Pokéballs on his belt and felt a bit intimidated. "I've just started out," Ben said. "I've got a Pikachu, a Rattata and a Pidgey, all low-level, but I'm working on them."

Taylor grinned in a friendly manner. "We've all got to start somewhere," he said. "I've got a Typhlosion, a Gyarados, a Victreebell, an Ampharos, a Noctowl and a Ariados. Of course, I've been training them for over two years now, so they are a lot stronger than starters." The two young men exchanged a few more pleasantries before Taylor excused himself and walked out of the Pokémon Centre.

Ben was impressed at the implied strength of Taylor's team. One day, I'll have Pokémon as strong as him, Ben promised himself. He wasn't an ambitious boy, but he wanted to do the very best he could in this vocation. All manners of opportunities were open for a successful and capable Trainer.

"Trainer Russell-Gough?" Nurse Joy called out. Ben walked over to the desk, a little less frantically than he did that first time. He was more certain of his the health of his Pokémon now. "Ben, your Pokémon are all fighting fit," Joy announced. "Here you go, a lv.8 Pikachu, a lv.6 Rattata and a lv.5 Pidgey." Ben thanked Joy, released Shock and put the three Pokéballs onto the clips on the back of his belt. "Are you in a hurry to go anywhere in particular right now, Ben?" Joy asked.

"Er... no," Ben admitted.

Joy smiled. "Then I recommend that you stay here in Viridian City for a few days. Look around the city and do some training to further boost the strength of your Pokémon. Although winning battles is the fastest way to increase their experience, proper training in their moves and in tactics helps as well."

Ben thought about that and then smiled. "I think I will need a room then," Ben said. Joy grinned in a surprisingly youthful manner and showed him a key that she had been holding behind her back.

~*~*~*~

After settling himself in to the small bunk room in the Pokémon Centre, Ben decided to check out the city. There were quite a few distractions for a just-turned-teenage boy. However, he was not so overawed that he forgot he was on a budget. He had to put buying supplies and necessities before video games and sweet foods, unfortunately.

Ben spent some time looking through the League's Museum near the League Administration building. Then he went to see the Colonial Museum where artefacts from Pokémon Island's often-mysterious past were displayed. He was amazed as he looked at the jewelled crown that used to be given to The Pokémon Master hundreds of years ago. He tried to imagine Ash Ketchum in that crown and started laughing, attracting several stares.

Finally, Ben went to the park. Several Trainers were training or battling, as always. Ben decided to avoid them for now. After getting Buck and Avia started on a Tackle-and-Dodge exercise, he started working with Shock to improve the strength and accuracy of her physical attacks. "Hey there!" Ben turned around to see a young man wearing a straw hat, a stained white tee shirt and jeans cut off at the knees. Two worm-like Pokémon sat on his shoulders.

Ben offered the other Trainer a slight smile. "Hello," he said. Sensing something was up, Shock ran over to Ben. Buck and Avia also stopped their exercises and looked over at the newcomer.

The Trainer smiled too, a smile that was hardly threatening, but not entirely friendly nonetheless. "How about it, kid?" he asked. "They look pretty tough for newbies, but I wonder if you can really direct them in battle."

Ben licked his lips. "Are we about to find out?" he asked.

The other Trainer nodded. "How does thirty dollars sound?" Ben smiled to hide his nervousness. This was the first real Battle he had ever been involved in, and his heart was pounding. A wager was traditional for a Battle, but it could easily leave you out-of-pocket if you were not a capable Trainer. "Do you really have to think about it?" the other Trainer asked. "A quick two-on-two match, that's all."

"No," Ben said firmly. "I don't have to think about it. Let's do it."

The other Trainer grinned. "Okay, go Weedle!" One of the bug-like Pokémon, a maggot-like grey-yellow creature with a red 'nose' and a bony horn in between its' eyes, leapt from his right shoulder and landed in front of Ben.

"This one is yours, Buck!" Ben said. "Use Tail Whip!" Buck jumped forwards and slapped his tail across the creature's face, making it reel back.

"Use Poison Sting, Weedle!"

"Wee!" The bug jumped back and spat a hail of silvery darts from its' horn. The darts struck Buck, making him squeal in pain.

Ben winced. "You can take it, Buck! Use Tackle!" Buck collided with the Weedle and knocked it backwards, tumbling across the ground. "Yeah!" Ben crowed. "Use Tackle again!"

"Use String Shot!" the other Trainer commanded. The Weedle spat out a string of what looked like spider's silk, which tangled around Buck. It didn't hurt him, but it slowed him down. "Now use Tackle!"

"Use Tackle, Buck!" Ben countered. This time, as Buck was trying to get loose from the sticky silk, the Weedle got his attack in first. Weedle charged Buck and knocked him backwards. The Rattata landed agilely on one foot and turned around to charge the Weedle and knock it flying again.

"Yeah! Great recovery!" Ben crowed.

"This isn't over yet!" the other Trainer snapped. "Use Poison Sting again!"

The needle-like darts struck Buck in the side, making him shudder in pain. Despite that, he managed to perform another Tackle that sent the Weedle tumbling to a halt at its' Trainer's feet. Its' eyes were crossed over comically and Ben bet that it had fainted.

His suspicions were confirmed when the other Trainer recalled it into its' Pokéball. As soon as the red light had faded, the other boy pointed forwards. "Now its' your turn, Caterpie!"

"Pie!" The other bug, a green creature like a giant caterpillar, jumped from its' Trainer's shoulders and landed in front of Ben.

Ben was looking at Buck, who seemed to have been affected by his battle more than should have been possible. He seemed weak, and Ben wasn't about to risk him being seriously hurt. "Okay, Avia, it is up to you now!" Ben was satisfied to note the concern and concentration in the other Trainer's eye as his Pidgey shot forwards and hovered in front of his Caterpie. "Okay, use Gust, Avia!"

"Use String Shot!" the other Trainer countered. Avia's wings began to blur, and the Caterpie was blown head-over-heels back into his Trainer's legs. After a few moments, it managed to face Avia and spat out a stream of silk. Avia dodged the attack with almost contemptuous ease.

"Use Gust again!" Ben commanded.

"Tackle!" the other Trainer said desperately. The gust of wind generated by Avia's wings seemed to swat Caterpie out of the air as it threw itself towards her. The bug Pokémon landed at its' Trainer's feet, quite unconscious. "Blast!" the Trainer snapped. He ran his hand through his hair and sucked in a deep breath. "Well, you did it, kid," he said at last. "I guess I shouldn't have taken you lightly. I'm Liam, by the way."

"I'm Ben," Ben replied, taking the hand that the other Trainer offered. He then watched as the guy pulled out his wallet and handed over three $10 notes. "It was a pleasure taking your money away," Ben said, pocketing his winnings. Liam gave him a sour look. "No offence, but I don't think your Pokémon stood a chance."

Liam didn't take offence. "Well, they are young," he said. "I brought them out here today to increase their experience. If I had brought my Beedrill or my Butterfree, you wouldn't have stood a chance."

"Really?" Ben asked challengingly.

"Yeah, really," Liam said. "Do you want to find out for yourself?"

"Uh... no," Ben admitted, making the older boy laugh. Ben turned to his Pokémon and noticed that Buck seemed in real trouble. He was having trouble breathing and was foaming a little at the mouth. "Buck! What's wrong?"

"Weedle's Poison Sting attack must have poisoned him," Liam said. Ben had his Pokédex out and saw that what the other Trainer had said was true. The Pokédex reported that Buck had been poisoned and was loosing 10% of his HP every minute. Ben bit down on his sense of panic that Buck had been seriously hurt, and pulled out his medical kit. He opened one of the disposable antidote hypodermics and jabbed the needle into the scruff of the Rattata's neck. The red flashing warning on the Pokédex's screen vanished immediately, making Ben sigh with relief.

"You seem to know a bit about this," Ben said at last.

Liam nodded. "I'm a bug catcher," he said. "I've got all sorts of bug-type Pokémon. Don't be fooled by what people say about them. Well trained and fully evolved, they are a match for anything, especially psychic-types." Liam seemed to go over into a 'lecture' mode. "Around these parts you only find two types of bug," he said. "Weedle is the one with a poison sting and the other is Caterpie. Weedle evolves into Beedrill, which is a great fighter. Caterpie evolves into Butterfree, which learns grass- and psychic-type attacks. You are never alone with a bug-type, kid. Never forget that."

"I won't," Ben said, trying not to laugh. Liam clearly enjoyed his work, but aiming to be a master of bug-type Pokémon seemed a bit... odd, somehow.

Ben had given Buck some potion and the Pokémon seemed much stronger as a result. "I'm glad to see that your Pokémon is going to be okay," Liam said in a formal tone. With that, he turned and left. Ben shook his head. When, in his dreams, he had visualised his first, real competitive battle, it had never been like that!

~*~*~*~

"Wow! So you beat this guy?" Cory's blue eyes were shining with excitement. Ben had to laugh.

"Well, it was only a couple of bugs," Ben replied modestly. "I would have had a hard time losing!"

Cory sighed. "Oh man, this is so cool," she sighed. Suddenly she looked concerned. "None of your Pokémon were hurt were they?" she asked, sounding very worried suddenly.

Ben shook his head. "Not badly," he said. Then he remembered that this wasn't exactly true. "Well, Buck, my Rattata got a nasty dose of poison from the Weedle, but I gave him an antidote and he is fine now." Ben remembered how worried he was about the Rattata, but Cory had no need to hear about that. He had won, and all his Pokémon were safe. That was all that mattered, wasn't it?

Cory grinned. "Ben," she said. "Could... uh... Could you get me a Pokémon?"

Ben didn't know how to reply at first. He still hadn't figured out exactly how he had convinced Buck and Avia to stay with him. Getting a Pokémon for his little sister was something else entirely. "I... I'll try," he said at last. "No promises, but I'll see what I can do."

"Great!" Cory grinned. "I love you, Ben! Mom wants to talk with you now!"

Sue replaced her daughter in front of the camera. "Are you doing okay, Ben?" she asked.

"I'm fine, Mom," Ben said. "I'm going to stay over in Viridian City for a few days to make sure I've got everything I need before I head off to continue the survey."

Sue smiled. "Well, you make sure that you are careful out there," she said. "And Ben, don't be afraid to pursue an opportunity if you find one out there. When Destiny comes calling, don't be afraid to answer."

After a few pleasantries, they hung up. Ben sat in front of the phone for a while and wondered exactly what his mother meant. This was already the most exciting and most terrifying adventure that he had ever been on. Could it get any better? What other destinies could there be out there? Ben had no illusions about himself. Surely his mother wasn't buying into the continual innuendo he had heard about 'Professor Oak's new protégé', could she?

Shock suddenly pushed her head against his face for a caress. Ben grinned and began to pet her. He was the Trainer of three Pokémon and he had a job to do. He would leave it at that for now.

~*~*~*~

That evening, Ben was sitting in the cafeteria of the Pokémon Centre. Nurse Joy had healed Buck and Avia, and the two Pokémon seemed almost smug at their victories. What is more, Shock seemed annoyed, as if she resented being left out of the action. Ben supposed that the older Trainers who said that Pokémon preferred competition may be correct.

As Ben ate, he listened in to the conversation of the two other young Trainers at the table with him. They were eagerly talking about going north to Pewter City to get their first Gym Badge. Ben wasn't in a hurry to attempt something like that. He was performing a survey for Professor Oak, after all. So, when he heard about the Pokémon on Route 22, his ears pricked up with interest. It seemed that this route, which was the beginning of the path west to Johto and north to the stadium at Indigo Plateau, had several powerful types of Pokémon living wild on it. Ben decided that he would go there tomorrow.

As always, the story begins with a child and his dream. A dream to be the very best. A dream to 'catch 'em all', and to be the greatest Pokémon Master of all time.

Book 2 - In the Beginning
Chapter 3 - To Seek a Destiny
Ben walked through the western outskirts of Viridian City, heading for the start of Route 22. Shock was sitting on his shoulder, chattering to herself about something. Buck and Aiva were snug in their Pokéballs, attached to his belt. Little did Ben know, but Shock was very nervous. This was the furthest that she had ever been from home, and she was more than a little afraid of what might await them in the wild areas ahead.

Finally, Ben reached the Viridian City Perimeter Road. He crossed over the road and walked north until he found the obelisk that marked the beginning of Route 22. Surprisingly, instead of long grass or rolling hills, what greeted his eyes was a paved road heading off to the west. Of course, this was a well-travelled route, both to Johto and to the League Stadium at Indigo Plateau, so maybe he should have expected it.

What left him in no doubt that he was entering a wild area, however, was the tall earth bank with a metal grille passing along the very summit. That was enough to stop most wild Pokémon getting through. As soon as Ben was over the summit he looked around himself nervously.

As Ben continued on, the path took a sharp right turn and passed through an area of tall grass that was lined on both sides by trees. Ben's nerves were on edge as he advanced into the grass. Suddenly something bashed against the boy's head and he nearly fell over. He looked up and blinked at what he saw standing in the branches of the nearest tree, glaring down at him. It was... well, the best way of describing it was a white ball of fluff about a foot across with skinny, naked three-fingered hands and two-toed feet. "Man-keeey!" It shrieked, making him jump in fear. Shock leapt from her friend's shoulder and glared up at the Pokémon (for it could be nothing else). Her determined expression betrayed none of the fear that she felt.

Ben pulled out his Pokédex and scanned the creature. There was a short delay while the Pokédex whirred and bleeped to itself before it identified the creature, which was still glaring down at the boy and his Pikachu. "Pokémon [HASHTAG]#056[/HASHTAG] - Mankey, the pig monkey Pokémon," the AI encyclopaedia declared. "Mankey is a member of the fighting-type of Pokémon, a subset of the normal-type who specialise in close-quarters combat with high-power physical attacks. A primate, much like humans, Mankey is an intelligent Pokémon However it is well-known for its' short temper and unpredictable nature. A Mankey can grow violent with little or no provocation.

"Mankey learns many fighting- and normal-type skills. It is compatible with many Technical Machines. However, with the exception of some electric- fire- and ice-type TMs, it cannot learn any special attacks.

"At experience level 28, Mankey evolves into Primeape." Ben looked carefully at the small creature and had to smile slightly. Despite the Pokédex's warnings, he couldn't help think that the Mankey looked vaguely ridiculous. The Mankey seemed to read Ben's mind and leapt from the tree with a screech of fury.

"Oh boy! Shock...!" Ben said as the Mankey charged him, its' hands outstretched with dangerous-looking claws extended.

"Pi-chu-pi, Ka!" Shock said. It sounded like she was agreeing with his sense of alarm.

"Maaannn!" the Mankey shrieked as it leapt towards Ben.

"Thundershock attack!" Ben shouted. The whiplash of electricity struck the Mankey in the centre of its' spherical body and it was blown backwards. It immediately jumped back onto its' feet and glared at Shock dangerously. Maybe it was Ben's imagination, but its' eyes seemed to glow. Shock took a step backwards, just as the creature jumped forwards and kicked her, sending her flying. "Shock are you okay?"

Shock seemed stunned. It reminded Ben of the effect of a Tail Whip attack. He shook his head. Battle first, analyse later, he told himself firmly. "Use Thunderwave, Shock!" The little Pikachu still seemed stunned. "Come on, Shock, I know you hurt, but you've got to trust me and do as I say!"

"Pi!" Shock replied. She concentrated and unleashed her newest trick, a crackling wall of static electricity that flowed out and consumed the Mankey, short-circuiting its' nervous system and slowing its' reactions to a comparative crawl. Surprised and in pain, the Mankey just stood there, trembling from the effects of the attack.

"Okay, now use Thundershock," Ben commanded. The Pikachu responded at once and the blast of energy sent the opposing Pokémon flying back into the trees. Ben rushed over to where the Mankey fell, pulling out a Pokéball as he did so. However, as he got closer, he saw that there was no need. The Mankey's eyes had crossed over in an amusing way and it had obviously fainted.

Shock jumped up onto Ben's shoulders and chattered something to him. "You did great, girl," Ben said, stroking her cheek. "Are you okay? That kick looked pretty powerful." Shock cooed reassuringly in reply. She had a HP Berry in her cheek pouches, so she wasn't too worried about having taken any damage. "Well... If you're sure," Ben said.

"Chu!" Shock replied and winked at Ben in an engaging way.

~*~*~*~

As Ben approached the end of the patch of long grass, he saw something in the grass nearby. He crouched down and pulled out his Pokédex. He had seen two of these Pokémon on his first trip to Viridian City with Shock. It looked like a purple rabbit with two pairs of two bony spurs sticking out of its' back. He had no doubt that it was dangerous, but no Trainer ever got anywhere worrying about that.

"Pokémon [HASHTAG]#033[/HASHTAG] - Nidoran, the poison pin Pokémon," the Pokédex reported. "Nidoran is a member of the poison-type of Pokémon. All these Pokémon are naturally venomous and should be treated with caution as their venom is dangerous to humans and Pokémon alike.

"Nidoran was the first species of Pokémon to have genders of its' members determined, long before Professor Felina Ivy devised a non-invasive gender test for Pokémon in 2062. Because the genders of Nidoran have distinct appearances and markedly different evolutionary paths, they have always been classified separately.

"The male Nidoran is identified by its' distinctive purple coloration and its' ears, which are much larger than those of its' female counterpart. It can perform many different poison-type attacks by harnessing its' natural venom. Like many poison-types, it is compatible with a few Technical Machines, exclusively those teaching physical skills.

"At experience level 16, Nidoran evolves into Nidorino. When exposed to the power of a Moon Stone, Nidorino evolves into Nidoking."

Shock leaned forwards eagerly, but Ben restrained her with a gentle caress. "You shouldn't hog all the fun, beautiful," he told the Pikachu. He pulled one of the Pokéballs off of his belt and threw it forwards. "Buck, I choose you!" The rat-like Pokémon materialised with a bright flash and landed right in front of the Nidoran, who reeled back in shock. "Don't give him a chance to react, Buck!" Ben commanded. "Hit him with a Tackle!"

"Rattata!" Buck cried as he leapt forward, knocking the Nidoran flying with a shoulder charge. The wild Pokémon scraped to a halt about three yards away. It slowly dragged itself to it's feet, clearly unable to get its' bearings. Recognising his chance, Ben pulled out a Pokéball, maximised it, set it to capture mode and threw it at the staggering poison-type. The ball bounced off the Nidoran's head and swallowed it up.

The ball shook for several seconds, its' red lights flashing and a buzzer sounding. Then the lights went green. Ben ran forwards and grabbed the ball. "Yeah!" he said. "I've caught a Nidoran! You did great, Buck!" The Rattata didn't succeed in even looking modest at receiving his Trainer's praise.

Shock rolled his eyes. [Don't let it get to your head,] she said.

Buck grinned. [Jealous!] he responded.

Ben blinked. "What are you two talking about?" he asked. Then he sighed and shook his head. "Why am I even asking? I wouldn't understand the answer! I just wish that someone had learnt Pokémon language and gave courses for trainers." Shock, for one, was glad that no one had. She wasn't sure if she wanted Ben to know all the names that she had called him after she had first been put into his care.

~*~*~*~

Ben decided to follow the path onwards rather than return to the Pokémon Centre with his new capture. He had decided that he could wait to learn more about the Nidoran. First he wanted to see how far he could go on Route 22 before he had to turn back.

As he walked along the road, he felt himself relax slightly. Pidgeys were singing in the branches, and the whole area seemed peaceful. Shock was relaxing too, and her gentle, rapid breaths reassured Ben for reasons that he couldn't understand. In the distance, he saw what looked like a building off to the right of the main pathway. Ben decided to find out who would have a house or building out here, at least a mile inside a wild zone.

Ben picked up his pace now that he had a concrete objective in view, when a voice called out. "Hey! Wimp!" Ben winced. He had a list of people he would want meet rather than Adam Bryant. It was a long, long list too. The grinning ash-blond boy was leaning against a tree on the left of the pathway. Although he had his usual sneering smile on his face, there was something in his eyes that caught Ben's attention. It was the look of anger and humiliation. "If you're planning to try to get onto Route 23, forget it," the boy said. "The gate guards won't let you pass."

Ah, Ben thought, that explains the look in his eyes. Adam wasn't used to being denied anything, and Ben had no doubt that there would be hell to pay for this check. "Weren't you good enough for them, Adam?" he asked cheerfully.

Adam rolled his eyes. "If I'm not good enough, then you don't stand any chance, Wimp," he replied. "Besides, you've got to have at least eight badges from any one of the Pokémon Leagues to get past the Victory Gate. Those are the rules." Adam stepped forwards. His quick eyes had noticed the four Pokéballs on Ben's belt. "Hey, now this looks interesting," he said. "You've caught some Pokémon! Well, there must be a God! Of course, they're weak. Just like you."

Ben scowled. He could stand Adam's sneering insults against himself. He didn't have anything to personally prove to the bully, but he wouldn't tolerate insults directed at his Pokémon. "You watch your mouth, Bryant," Ben snapped, "or I'll make you eat your words."

Adam barked out a single derisive laugh. "That's hilarious!" he chuckled. "Why don't you try and back up those brave words, Wimp?" He reached behind him and pulled out a Pokéball. "Let's have a two-on-two battle. I've got plenty of new strong Pokémon that I need to exercise!" Adam cocked his head. "Just to make things interesting," he added, "let's put up a wager. How does... $250 sound to you?"

"You're on," Ben snapped, before he realised that Adam was talking about half his credit account. Well, I guess I have to put my money where my mouth is, he thought. Ben stroked Shock's cheek; the Pikachu had sensed Adam's insulting words and was leaning forwards, growling audibly in anger. "Are you ready, Shock?"

"Kapi, Ka!" Shock snapped. Ben clearly heard in his head: [Ready, Ben!]

"I'll show you the meaning of power," Adam sneered, throwing his Pokéball forwards. The ball split open and disgorged a flash of light which solidified into a Spearow. The bird-like Pokémon took up a hovering position in front of Adam's face.

"Okay then! Shock, I choose you!" Ben said, pointing at the flying-type Pokémon. Shock leapt from his shoulder and landed half way in between her Trainer and her opponent.

"Buck-beak, use Growl!" Adam ordered. The small bird-like creature cried out with a strange warbling chirping sound that made Ben and Shock both wince slightly.

"Don't hesitate, Shock, use Thundershock!" Ben commanded. Shock concentrated and unleashed a whiplash of electric-blue light. The attack flashed around the Spearow, making it screech in pain and fall from the sky. It lay there, smouldering, but still conscious. "Finish it off with a Tackle," Ben commanded.

[My pleasure,] Shock growled, jumping forwards.

"Get up, Buck-beak!" Adam roared in fury. "Use Scratch on that stupid rat!" It was too late. Shock shoulder-charged the Spearow and sent it tumbling across the ground. It scraped to a halt at Adam's feet, quite unconscious. Adam's face twisted with an angry snarl. "I'll show you, you wimp," he hissed as he recalled his beaten Spearow. The boy swapped Pokéballs and threw a grey-and-white Super-type Pokéball. "Go Champ!" Adam's starter, Champ the Eevee, materialised in a flash of white light. "Okay, Champ, use Sand Attack!"

"Use Thunderwave!" Ben countered. Shock was the faster of the two Pokémon, and she unleashed a crackling wave of electricity that consumed Champ, making the Eevee squeal in pain. Frozen by the electrical overload of his nervous system, Champ couldn't respond to his Trainer's commands for a few seconds. Ben didn't hesitate. "Follow up with Thundershock!" he commanded.

[Eat...THIS!] Shock shrieked, launching an offensive electrical attack which crackled around the Eevee with the familiar crackling blue-white light.

"Damn it, Champ!" Adam howled. "Wake up! I said to use Sand Attack!"

"Ee... Ee... vee..." Champ growled, shaking from the multiple electrical attacks.

Ben remembered the last time Shock and Champ met in battle, the Eevee proved that he was stronger and able to resist electrical attacks fairly well. He decided to do something about that. "Use Tail Whip!" Ben ordered. Shock reversed her position and slapped her tail across the Eevee's face. Champ staggered backwards, then reversed his position to kick some dirt in Shock's face as she turned to face him again. "Ouch, Shock, use Tackle, quickly!" Ben called out.

Shock charged, but Champ was able to dance out of the way of her attack, as she couldn't see clearly enough to aim her charge at her enemy. "Now, use Pound!" Adam snapped. The Eevee jumped forwards and drove all four legs into Shock's exposed back, knocking her flat.

"Ouch! Shock, are you okay?" Ben called out. Shock was hurting, but she managed to grin at her Trainer, in between wiping her eyes to get the grit out of them. "Okay, use Thundershock!"

"Use Tackle! Quick, before the rat has a chance to attack!" Adam countered. Unfortunately, Champ was still not completely recovered from the effects of the earlier Thunderwave and he was too slow to beat Shock to the attack. The electrical attack made the Eevee stiffen again and stagger visibly. Champ's muscles cramped and he was briefly unable to attack.

"Great job! Use Tackle!" Ben cried out. Although she could not see the Eevee very clearly, she had heard his cry of pain when she hit him with a Thundershock. She charged forwards and struck the Eevee hard, sending him tumbling head-over-heels across the ground. Ben grinned in triumph when he saw the way the Eevee collapsed in a heap at Adam's feet. The youngster pointed to his feet and Shock ran over to him, taking up a guarding position in front of her trainer.

Adam was practically dancing with fury. "Get up, Champ! You can beat that stupid electrical rat! You have to...!" Adam stopped and looked at his unconscious Eevee in horror. "You... you won?" The boy was utterly amazed. "I... I don't believe it," he said at last. He looked up at Ben angrily. "You've got a run of luck, Wimp," he hissed, "but I will win in the end, don't you doubt that for a second." Adam took out his wallet, pulled out five $50 notes and tossed them into Ben's face.

Ben had picked up Shock for a congratulatory hug. He watched Adam carefully as he bent down to collect his winnings. "I guess you aren't as good as you think," Ben suggested.

Adam scowled at the other boy. "I'm going to train hard, beat all the Gym Leaders in Kanto and then make you eat those words, you penniless nothing," he snapped. "I will be the Pokémon Master one day soon. You can be sure of that." With those parting words, Adam stormed off back towards Viridian City.

"So, you want to be the Pokémon Master, do you Adam?" Ben murmured to himself as he stroked Shock's soft fur. "Well... we can't have that, can we Shock?"

[What are you talking about?] Shock asked.

"What are you going to do about it, then?" another voice asked. Ben jumped in shock and span to face the speaker.

It was a girl, about his age, with a canine Pokémon sitting at her heels. She had medium-length auburn hair trailing down her back in two French Braids. She was wearing a red tee-shirt with a maroon sleeveless jacket, white denim shorts and she had a red bandanna tied over the top of her head. Her green eyes sparkled with mischief. "I just saw you take down that blowhard," the girl said. "That was a good bit of fighting, although you got some lucky breaks too."

Ben bristled slightly at hearing his victory, which had made him feel very good, dismissed as 'luck'. "Who are you?" he asked, a bit harshly.

The girl giggled mischievously and covered her mouth to hide her laughter. "Your Pikachu is mirroring your expression and posture exactly," she said. "It is so cute! I don't suppose that you'd want to trade it for a Growlithe?"

"Not on your life," Ben said, automatically stroking Shock's sensitive cheek pads. "Shock is with me all the way on this one."

"Good," the girl said. "That is how it is supposed to be. I'm Barbara Cook. All my friends call me 'Barb'." The girl extended her hand.

"Ben Russell-Gough," Ben replied, taking her hand. "I'm from Pallet Town."

"Really? The place where Master Ash lives?" Barb was clearly very impressed. "I'm from Cinnabar Island. That's where I got Rusty, of course." Barb indicated the dog-like Pokémon sitting at her heels. It had black transverse stripes running the length of its' body as well as a white 'bib' on the front of its' body, a fluffy white tail and a white mane running down its' back from its' head.

Ben pulled out his Pokédex to make an ID, although he thought he knew what species this was. "Pokémon [HASHTAG]#058[/HASHTAG] - Growlithe, the fire puppy Pokémon," the Pokédex (which Ben had started thinking of as 'Dexter') reported. "Growlithe is a member of the fire-type of Pokémon. It is extremely loyal and bonds very closely to its' Trainer.

"Growlithe can learn many powerful normal- and fire-type skills. It is also compatible with most normal- earth- and fire-type TMs. Upon exposure to a Fire Stone, Growlithe evolves into Arcanine."

"Hey, is that a new model of Pokédex?" Barb asked excitedly.

"Yeah," Ben admitted. "It is a prototype that Professor Oak gave to me. He wants me to figure out where all the different kinds of Pokémon make their habitats right now."

"Wow!" Barb was suitably impressed. "So, where are you going next to do that?"

Ben thought for a moment. "For now, I'm going back to Viridian City," he said at last. "Then I'm going to figure out how you get into the Pokémon League. Adam doesn't deserve to be the Pokémon Master. He's arrogant and he is cruel to his Pokémon. I aim to show him the error of his ways!"

~*~*~*~

Ben and Barb talked a lot as they walked back to the Viridian City Pokémon Centre. Ben found out that Barb was from a fairly important family on Cinnabar Island (although she wouldn't give Ben too many details, he noticed). She had taken her Growlithe and headed over to the mainland because she wanted to be more than her family's youngest member. She wanted a life for herself. She had, so far, caught a Rattata (Rizzo), a Pidgey (Feathers) and a Spearow (Wings).

Ben handed his Pokémon over to Nurse Joy and turned around to speak to Barb again. "So, where are you going next?" she asked.

Barb looked a bit embarrassed. "I haven't got the first clue," she admitted. "I've just been heading north from Pallet Town trying to figure it out as I go."

"That sounds like what I have been doing, more-or-less," Ben replied. He laughed. "I guess that I should come up with a better plan if I want to complete this survey properly, and show Adam that he can't expect everything in this world to happen just the way he wants it to!"

"Excuse me," Nurse Joy said, "but I couldn't help overhearing your conversation." Both kids turned beetroot red in embarrassment, making Joy smile slightly as she walked over with their Pokémon (still in their Pokéballs) on a rack. "If you want to get into the League," she advised, "you should head north to Pewter City. Most Trainers agree that it is the best place to go if you want to start earning Gym Badges. The Boulder Gym teaches important Training skills and Gym Leader Flint is a good teacher."

Ben thought about that. "Yeah, okay," he said. "Thanks, Nurse Joy!" Ben released Shock from her ball and laughed as she threw herself into his arms. "To Pewter City it is!"

Book 2 - In the Beginning
Chapter 4 - Coming Together
Next morning, Ben and Barb went to the park beside the Pokémon Centre to train their Pokémon. Ben wanted to spend some time working with his Pokémon, most importantly with his new Nidoran.

Ben had named his newest Pokémon 'Thumper' after a famous rabbit in a children's story that he had loved when he was much younger. According to the Pokédex, the small rabbit-like poison-type knew Tackle, Leer (a strange move that reduced a Pokémon's resistance to injury) and Venom Bite, a move that injected powerful toxins into the Pokémon's opponent.

Thumper was... well he wasn't the smartest Pokémon Ben had ever met. He tended to charge right into battle and had been knocked around pretty badly by Buck because of that. Still, he was getting used to following Ben's commands and the boy felt confident that he would be useful in battle.

Ben had jokingly suggested that they go north to Viridian City's Pokémon Gym, the Earth Gym. Barb's response was understandably negative. In fact, her exact words were: "You have got to be kidding!" The Earth Gym was pretty famous for being one of the hardest challenges a Trainer could face. Gary Oak, Professor Oak's grandson, was a strong Trainer and only the very best could hope to beat his powerful squad of Pokémon. Neither of the teenagers felt ready to face facing Gary just yet.

The two new friends were taking a break from their training when Barb turned to Ben and spoke in a serious and nervous tone of voice. "Hey, Ben," Barb said. "Do you want to battle?"

Ben looked at the auburn-haired girl thoughtfully. He had been impressed by the way that Rusty, her Growlithe, had quickly and efficiently obeyed her commands. She had the makings of a good Trainer, there was no doubt. "Do you want to?" he countered.

Barb seemed very nervous and didn't know exactly how to reply. "Well... It is what Trainers do, isn't it?" she said at last. Ben took that as meaning 'no'. He could tell that the girl was trying very hard to be a good Trainer. However, she did have a point.

Ben couldn't resist offering a smile. "Do I have to fight every new Trainer I meet?" he asked. "It would be nice to have a conversation with someone without having to start a fight!"

Barb laughed. "No, silly," she said. "This is just a friendly little encounter. I just want to see how my Pokémon measure up against yours."

Ben shrugged and looked at Shock, who was sitting in front of him. She grinned in a way that seemed to say 'Why not?'. "Okay," Ben said. "Let's do it. A three-on-three match. As this is nice and friendly, we won't worry about giving each other anything afterwards."

Barb grinned. "Great!" she said. She reached behind her and pulled out a Pokéball. "Go Rizzo!" she shouted, throwing it forwards. The ball split open and spat out a flash of white light, which quickly resolved into Barb's Rattata.

Ben nodded to himself and selected his newest Pokémon. "Go Thumper!" he commanded.

"Nido!" Thumper cried as he materialised in front of Barb's normal-type.

"Okay, Rizzo, let's set him up for a quick exit! Use Tail Whip!"

"Use Venom Bite!" Ben countered. The two rodent-like Pokémon leaped towards each other. Rizzo slapped his prehensile tail over Thumper's nose, making the rabbit-like Pokémon jump back with a cry of surprise. "Focus, Thumper!" Ben called out. "You can do it!" Thumper jumped forwards with a growl and sank his long incisor teeth into Rizzo's side. The attack didn't do much damage, but Ben knew that it would have injected the Nidoran's powerful venom into the other Pokémon's bloodstream.

Barb scowled. Rizzo didn't look too badly hurt, so she figured that something had gone wrong with the attack. "Okay, Rizzo," she called out. "Finish it! Use Quick Attack!"

"Use Leer!" Ben responded.. Before Thumper could even move, Rizzo turned into a blur and shot across the gap between him and his opponent. His shoulder-charge struck home, sending Thumper tumbling end-over-end. Ben winced. "Blast," he said, realising that Thumper had fainted. He raised the Nidoran's Pokéball and recalled him to his Pokéball. He swapped balls and threw the new one forwards. "Go Buck!"

Barb watched as Ben's Rattata landed in front of her own. She knew that Ben had been on the road for a few days less than she had. Because of this, she suspected that Rizzo would have a slight experience and, therefore, speed advantage. "Use Tail Whip, Rizzo," she commanded.

"Rat-at!" Rizzo squeaked and leapt towards his new opponent. He slapped his tail over Buck's muzzle, reducing his ability to withstand injury by a tiny amount.

"Buck, use Scary Face!" Ben commanded. Buck snarled at Rizzo, and the other Rattata reeled back, looking more than a little afraid.

"Don't worry, Rizzo," Barb called. "You can handle him! Use Quick Attack!"

"Quick Attack, Buck!" Ben countered.

Much to Barb's shock, Buck got his attack in first, blurring across the ground and slamming into Rizzo's side, sending the Rattata tumbling. "Come on, Rizzo, get up!" Barb pleaded with her Pokémon. You can do it!" The Rattata staggered upright, and launched himself forwards, shoulder-charging Buck and knocking him over. As Rizzo staggered back towards Barb, he seemed dazed, more so than could be explained by the effect of Buck's Quick Attack. Suddenly Barb flashed back on Thumper's one successful attack. Rizzo had been poisoned! "Blast!" she hissed, kicking herself mentally for missing that possibility. She reached into her medical pouch and pulled out a one-use hypodermic. She quickly rushed over and injected the General Antidote into the scruff of Rizzo's neck. The Rattata sighed and seemed a little less frantic.

"Use Tail Whip!" Ben commanded his Rattata. Before Rizzo could fully benefit from the effects of the antidote, Buck slapped his tail over his opponent's muzzle.

"Hey! That's not fair!" Barb protested. "He was hurt!"

"Of course it's 'fair'," Ben scoffed. "He's able to fight, so I can use an attack, you know that!"

Barb scowled. "I'll show you," she snapped. "Use Quick Attack, Rizzo!"

"Counter with your own Quick Attack, Buck!" Ben replied. Once again, Buck was faster off the mark, thanks to the effects of his Scary Face attack. He slammed into Rizzo and sent him flying across the turf. The Rattata landed at his trainer's feet, quite unconscious. "That's one-all, Barb," Ben said. He pointed at his feet and Buck ran over to him, looking very smug. Ben gave his Rattata a scratch on the head in congratulations.

[Nice job, Buck,] Shock said from Ben's shoulder with a brief nod. Buck was surprised by this. Shock congratulating someone?

"This isn't over yet," Barb said. There was fire in her green eyes now. She was sorely annoyed by the way Ben had set her up using his Nidoran's poison. She swore that she wouldn't make that error again. She recalled Rizzo and selected a new Pokéball. "Go Wings!"

"Spear!" Wings screeched as she materialised. Buck hunkered down, ready for anything (or so Ben thought).

"Wings, use Growl!" Barb ordered.

"Use Tail Whip, Buck!" Ben countered. Buck staggered slightly as the strange infrasonic part of the Spearow's growl affected his concentration. Then he leapt forwards, somersaulted in mid-air and slapped his tail over the Spearow's beak. "Great work, Buck! Okay, follow that up with Quick Attack!"

"Use Peck!" Barb countered. Buck landed, turned around and shot back towards Wings in a single blurringly-fast move. The Rattata struck the Spearow and sent it tumbling through the air. Wings regained control and shot back towards her opponent and delivered a solid peck to the top of his head. Buck staggered away, looking rather surprised. "Nice shot, Wings!" Barb called out. "Use Growl again!"

Ben knew that Buck was hurt. "Use your Berry, Buck," he commanded. "Then use Quick Attack again!" Buck swallowed and Ben saw that the Pokémon felt stronger. He watched as the Pokémon darted forward and struck his opponent again. Strangely enough, the Spearow didn't seem as hurt as she could be. You dumb cluck! he scolded himself. If my Pokémon carry berries, so might hers! It was also clear that Wings' use of Growl was paying off. Buck's attacks were weaker now. "We'll have to soften her up," Ben called out. "Use Tail Whip, Buck!"

"Use Scratch!" Barb countered. The flying-type Pokémon got her attack in first, making Buck stagger. Then he jumped up and slapped his tail over the other Pokémon's face. "Okay, use Peck again!" Barb commanded.

"Quick Attack!" Ben yelled. The two Pokémon came together hard. Buck sent Wings tumbling through the air. Once again, she swung back and pecked him hard on the head, making him stagger and fall.

"Ha!" Barb cried in triumph when she realised that Buck had fainted. "How do you like those apples, Mr. Smart-mouth?"

Ben scowled dangerously as he recalled his Pokémon. He watched as Wings landed on her Trainer's forearm to accept a caress of her chest feathers and a dose of Potion. Ben recalled Buck to his Pokéball and nodded to his best Pokémon. "Okay, Shock, this one is all yours," he said.

Shock grinned and leapt from his shoulders. "Pikaaa!" she cried out.

"Okay, Wings," Barb said, suddenly looking a bit nervous. "Don't hesitate! Use Scratch!"

"Use Thundershock!" Ben ordered. Shock concentrated and unleashed a whiplash of electricity that caught Wings just as she took to the air. The flying-type dropped limply to the ground. After a few singed moments, she staggered upright.

"Ow! Wings, are you okay?" Barb sounded like she had felt that one. Ben understood that. He felt just as bad when his friends were hurt. The Spearow chirped an affirmative, looking at Shock in an angry way. "Okay, use Scratch then!"

"Use Tackle!" Ben countered. The two Pokémon shot towards each other. Shock got her Tackle in first and sent Wings sprawling. The Spearow rolled to a halt at her trainer's feet. Barb winced in empathic suffering and recalled her Pokémon to her Pokéball. Shock jumped into her Trainer's arms with a loud cry of victory. "Great job, Shock!" Ben called out hugging her hard.

As this was happening, Barb was shaking her head. She knew from the start that Wings didn't really stand a chance against a Pikachu, but she hadn't expected it to be over that quickly. There was only one thing she could do now, if she wanted a chance at winning (and she would be damned if she gave up). She pulled a grey-and-white Super Ball from her belt and activated it. "Okay, it's up to you now, Rusty! Don't let me down!" Barb's starter, her Growlithe, Rusty, materialised in front of her.

"Okay, Shock, this is going to be a tough one," Ben told his Pikachu. "Are you up for this?"

[I'm read and raring to go!] Shock squeaked, scowling fearlessly at the fire-type. She leapt from her Trainer's arms and landed right in front of Rusty. The two Pokémon glared at each other for a few moments before their Trainers gave their first commands.

"Use Thundershock attack, Shock!"

"Use Ember, Rusty!" The red-yellow fireball and the blue-white electric shock crossed over each other, and both Pokémon were knocked from their feet with cries of surprise and dismay. "Stay focused, Rusty!" Barb called out in encouragement. "Use Growl!"

"Shock! Are you okay?" Ben gasped. The singed Pikachu looked up at her Trainer uncertainly for a moment, but seeing Ben's face boosted her resolve. She nodded firmly. "Okay, use Thunderwave!"

Rusty had started his Growl attack, making both Ben and Shock wince from the infrasonic vibrations. However, Shock was still able to attack, and she did so. Rusty was surrounded by the rippling wave-front of electricity and began to twitch in pain. "Oh no, Rusty!" Barb gasped. "Don't panic! You've got to keep focussed! Use Tackle attack!" Barb was going to find out if normal moves were more effective on Ben's Pokémon than special moves.

Unfortunately, Ben wasn't standing still. "Use Thundershock again!" he commanded. With Rusty's reactions slowed by the effects of the Thunderwave, Shock was able to get her attack in first. The electrical whiplash nearly knocked the Growlithe from his feet, sending him staggering sideways. Combined with the effect of the Thunderwave, it overloaded his nervous system for a few seconds, leaving him unable to move. "Yes! You are winning Shock!"

"Rusty!" Barb cried out, feeling tears beginning to prick at the back of her eyes. He had never been hurt this badly before, and she was finding it hard to concentrate. Seeing Ben's glee helped her focus her mind, though. She was not going to let this... kid... from a small provincial town beat her! "Rusty, focus your mind and use Ember!"

"Use Tail Whip, Shock," Ben commanded. He wanted to set up Barb's Pokémon for a knock-down move, and he had to soften the other Pokémon up first. Shock jumped forwards and slapped her stiff, lightning-bolt-shaped tail over Rusty's snout. The fire-type jerked back and then spat another fireball. At this close range, he couldn't miss, and Shock was blasted away from him by the force of the attack. "Shock!" Ben gasped in fear and empathic anguish.

Shock looked up at Ben and managed a little smile. [I'm okay... I think...] the Pikachu said in an attempt to reassure her Trainer. She felt battered and singed all over, but she had her pride. She wasn't going to give up when Ben was relying on her.

"We've got to finish this now, Shock," Ben said. "Use Tackle attack!"

"Counter with your own Tackle, Rusty," Barb called out. The two Pokémon jumped towards each other. They collided hard enough to make both Trainers gasp in pain as the impact shock echoed back along their empathic link with their Pokémon. Both Pokémon collapsed in a heap where they fell and were still. "Rusty!" Barb screamed.

"Shock!" Ben shouted. Both Trainers rushed over to their fallen friends and dropped to their knees beside them. Ben gathered Shock into a protective embrace and Barb lay Rusty's head on her lap, stroking his furry cheeks in loving worry. "She's fainted," Ben said after looking at Shock for a few seconds.

"So has Rusty," Barb said. "So... er... who won?"

Ben shook his head that she could think of something so trivial when one of her Pokémon was hurt. On the other hand, that was something a Trainer had to expect and learn to deal with if he or she were to prosper... "I guess it is a draw," Ben admitted at last.

The two youngsters stared at each other in bewilderment for a few seconds before, much to their mutual surprise, they began to laugh.

Ben and Barb were sitting on one of the couches in the atrium of the Pokémon Centre. Both were still feeling a bit upset about the non-result of their battle. However, both were also thinking about the other. They had gained each other's respect in that explosive confrontation. That was a victory that would effect their futures, although neither was aware of it at this time.

Finally, Ben tired of the silence and turned to Barb. "Er... Would it help if I said I was sorry?" he asked.

"No, because you aren't," Barb replied tartly, not bothering to look at the boy. Ben's mouth dropped open. Before he could reply, Barb continued. "You fought your hardest and so did I. We both knew that this could happen."

"I guess..." Ben admitted at last. He smiled slightly. "That doesn't make it any easier to accept though. I just would hate it if you were angry about this."

Barb nodded. "Pokémon are tough, but you are no good as a trainer if you don't care when they are hurting," she said. She turned and looked at the sandy-brown-haired boy sitting next to her. "So, you don't have any hard feelings? About the fight and your Pokémon getting hurt?"

Ben shrugged. "Like you say, it can happen. Besides, you wanted to win and so did I. I guess I just wasn't expecting a draw."

Barb nodded again and licked her lips nervously. "So... You wouldn't mind if I tagged along?" she asked. Ben blinked at her in polite confusion. "I'm tired of travelling on my own," she said. "Alone apart from my Pokémon that is. I'd like some human company. I thought, as we're both going to Pewter City, I could travel with you."

Ben thought about that. He didn't know why, but he liked the thought of having Barb around for a while longer. "Why not?" he said. "I'd love to have some company of the human kind." Barb smiled in relief and Ben felt a fuzziness in his head that he didn't understand. The two teenagers shook hands, just as Nurse Joy came out carrying their newly-healed Pokémon.

~*~*~*~

That night, as he settled down in his bunk, with Shock sleeping beside his head, Buck and Thumper curled up at his feet and Avia perched on the back of the room's one chair, snoring musically, Ben found himself thinking about the day.

Ben wasn't ignorant or naïve by any stretch of the imagination. His father had made sure that he was entering the teenage years with a proper understanding of the changes that he should expect as his body grew into manhood. He knew that he should expect to have funny feelings about girls. However, he was certain that this was not the cause behind his decision to accept Barb's offer to travel with him. He respected the girl's abilities as a Trainer and he thought that she had the right attitude towards Pokémon training. Besides, the boy was confident enough that these 'changes' would never be strong enough to affect his decisions about who he wanted to be his friend.

More importantly... Well, as they had both said they could both use human company. Ben had met a few Trainers in Pallet Town who had been travelling on their own for years. To call them 'odd' was an understatement, and Ben had no desire to suffer that fate.

Most importantly, Ben had recognised something else. He felt comfortable around Barb. She put him at his ease. They were becoming friends, and that was something that should be encouraged. It was always good to have someone there for you. Someone human that is, he added with a silent smile as he looked at the peacefully snoozing Pikachu lying beside his head.

To be continued...
