Suppose you were making a AMV of the best animation of the Pokemon anime (nothing theatrically released). What would you add? It doesn't even have to be limited to battles.

For me, it doesn't get any better than Monferno punching Croconaw in Bagged Then Tagged!

Hmmm. I think I'd use the battles when physical attacks were actually shown hitting the opponent, instead of the usual flash of light and the opponent getting hit.

Any examples (besides mine)?

Someone should do a Pokemon Sakuga, showing the best of Iwane, Tamagawa and Natsume

I would use a lot from Battling a Thaw in Relations! That episode is epic!!! And I recall Maylene practicing with her Lucario, it was short but amazing, too (Lost Leader Strategy!)

I checked. Someone did one for Iwane but Youtube blocked it.

Yeah.... that would be mine. XD It wasn't that good anyway... It was all over the place. I'm thinking about making a Battle Frontier Sakuga and an End of DP/Sinnoh League Sakuga for Iwane. There are some great eyecandy episodes around there. Hopefully they'll turn out a lot better than that one.

What I find truly amazing about "Battling a Thaw in Relations!" and "A Real Rival Rouser!" is that Masaaki Iwane was the only key animator in both episodes... He then went on to do key animation in the next episode, and two episodes after that the final episode of DP as the only key animator. Sheesh... he must have been exhausted.
And yeah, Maylene VS Lucario was pretty sweet. Ash's battle against Reggie near the end was good, too.

(For those who want an excellent explanation of a what a key animator does, and all of this Sakuga business in general, check out this video put up from a member of a panel at Anime Central 2011. Look around the 2 minute mark. Check out the other vids in the series too if your interested.)

Not really. There are plenty of battles like that out there.
Totally. A favorite of mine from the Battle Frontier series is "Tactics Theatrics!". Akihiro Tamagawa and Iwane make an awesome duo. (Sakuga wiki lists Iwane as in charge of the first half and Tamagwa for the second)

Another episode from Battle Frontier I would recommend watching is "Grating Spaces", particularly the tag battle with Ash and Brock.

I -adore- Iwane episodes. They're so richly animated, so fluid, just.... asdklfalsjdf stunning.

For some reason the contest battle between Haruka and Hikari stands out to me as being really stunning

Infernape vs Garchomp from last DP episode pretty much sums this thread.

For recent episodes I pick BW36. The animation is really fluid and intense. The angles of most scenes are so different it really helps enjoy watching the episode more. Drill Run is probably the best example here.

I have been most awestruck over the May vs Drew battle in the Kanto Grand Festival and, despite being before the digital era the Charizard vs Magmar battle when Ash fought Blaine on top of the volcano. For some of the most impressive animation in the history of the show, you have to look no further than those two battles and I would say that those two instances have left the biggest impression on me.

I also admired the decision to make Iwane a key animator for many episodes in the Sinnoh League, which in turn enhanced the quality and liveliness of the battles massively. The Infernape vs Electivire battle was one of the most hard-hitting matches I have ever seen in the Pokemon anime.

I adored the animation where Hikozaru battled Zangoose in the double battle with Satoshi and Shinji. One of the most prominent scenes from that episode was when Zangoose pinned Hikozaru down with its claw; hands-down one of the best scenes in the show. The thick lines to define Zangoose were also a great addition to the double battle and really made it stand out. <3

Pokemon battles generally bore me now because of things like that. Not that game battles look any better.

But yeah, the thing with Infernape and Garchomp was nice. I wish there were much more scenes like that.

Can anyone think of any well animated non-battle moments?

The entirety of the Rocket/Plasma episodes looked really well animated if that matters.

Great animation was shown at Zoey vs Nando in the semis of the sinnoh GF! The animation was Ideal!

The animation improved a lot its amazing since the start of the Sinnoh saga! the gym's in Sinnoh were really good done, especially the Maylene and Fantina battles!

One of my favorite animated episodes was Pillars of Friendship! in DP. The animation looked gorgeous. For some reason, it stood out. I really like the backdrops from episodes like Saving Darmanitan From the Bell! and Sewaddle and Burgh in Pinwheel Forest!.

Hm... many of Natsume's episodes have great animation. Especially in late DP. The night scene with the fire in Scraggy-Hatched to Be Wild! looked stunning; it actually showed some of the light fading away in some parts, making the scene look realistic. Other scenes in that episode also showed the nature of the evening darkness. Coming Full-Festival Circle! was definitely one of my favorite episodes by that animator. The scenes shown from the Plasma two-parter were amazing.

I'm not that big of a fan of Shimura's work, but Strategy Begins at Home! was one of the best ones for me.

The beginning of the Elgyem episode looked pretty nice, too. I really like Ogata's BW work.

Tamagawa can create extremely comedic facial expressions. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be A Meteoric Rise to Excellence!. The famous Monferno vs. Croconaw scene in Bagged then Tagged! was also amazing.

No doubt, the series is filled with excellently-animated episodes, and these are just some.

The best animations for pokemon AMV's are definitely Iwane's stuff. But it's not always relevant, so you'll have to deal with the cheap stuff. I'm doing an Ash/Paul AMV and there's definitely some slow or cheaply animated stuff alongside the good scenes (tag battle, league battle, lake acuity battle). But since you mentioned AMV and not just normal scenes, the trick is to make the cheap animation seem faster and better using editing and subtle effects.
