I recently came across a scan from a 1996 issue of Corocoro that shows some Beta sprites for Japanese Pokemon Blue (International Red and Blue) on the right. on the left is their Red and Green sprites. Pay close attention to ditto sprite in particular. 20120601163639.jpg Speaking of Red and Green i also found this flyer that shows that Red and Green were intended to be released on Dec 21 1995 which explains the 1995 copyright date pokemonred-a.jpg

Rhydon (the pose), Ditto (much different), Raticate (redrawn face), Dragonair (VERY SLIGHTLY different pose) and Mewtwo (pose) are all different.

The Mewtwo sprite looks much better than what they ended up using.

Yeah, I'm very surprised by these sprites. Considering that in Jp Blue, Kakuna has arms and Koffing's symbol is above his face, it's a wonder that they didn't end up using those sprites.

Also Kadabra and Porygon are slightly different and Clefairy has no wings. And Red is in the Red / Green pose rather than the Blue pose.
Man, that Mewtwo looks awesome. And I always hated the Red / Blue Mewtwo sprite, which was even worse considering he was one of my favorites.

So...Game Freak ended up using some of the beta sprites for Blue (J) and Red and Blue (int)?

I'd call that LAZINESS.

Uh, what? All of the sprites in Blue were redrawn.

Just that these were originally drawn different. If anything, it's even more work.

Oh, okay. I thought the sprites of some Pokémon (ie: Charmander) got unchanged between Red and Green and Japanese Blue.
