Beyond the 4th wall - What's the real reason for team rocket's takeover?

Ok. I may be breaking the 4th wall for some people, but I really think there is an explanation besides "Giovanni will be so proud!" I read something about server load and I have recently been experiencing 503 errors over and over, plus I once saw a 504 - Gateway Time-Out error (which I print-screened and turned into a demotivational poster). Is it more or less to restrict server load? Or is there another reason that I'm not seeing?

The mods said that they actually expanded the capacity for receiving messages in time for HGSS. This Rocket event is simply advertising.

TR takeover thing was TTEchidna's idea for the USA HG/SS release, sort of to have fun. The 503's and the server stuff is because of the release of HG/SS, a lot of people are coming to the Wiki and the forums for numerous reasons.

Also this is the wrong section. lrn2navigate

Sorry, I'm still new and the section names are not always very obvious.

Well, it wasn't just to do the fun event, with everyone changing names and such...

We also planned to roll out VB4 when the forums were closed down over the brief period at midnight EST. Unfortunately, continued problems with switching the skins and database over caused us to be unable to in time... we're looking at sometime later this year, probably, at this point, since we're waiting on a specific feature in an upcoming revision of VB4.

And of course the wiki lockdown occurred because we do want to manage to stay up... with thousands of new users editing pages, we'd be completely crippled within minutes. Only 20something users editing means we get a nice cool update period, and then everyone can come back editing when things stop being crazy... which might be some time from now, but hopefully before the end of the month. We're in an intensely high-traffic time... HGSS's release really blew us away.

Nintendo is UNFORGIVING, too. Next month comes more Gen V details.

I was wondering why I was getting 503'd a crapload of times during the "takeover"... and now I know.:ksmile:

That's also a good thing... me-sa can't wait.:naughty:

P.S. I knew you were Petrel from the start. The "That F'er" in your user title was a dead giveaway.:p

A good thing indeed, but not so much when trying to be QC on the wiki. Lock down every damn page we can so we don't have someone randomly coming in and putting "zorark is dark-typ pokemon and evovled from zora", hitting save, and calling that a featured article.

Excuse my naivete, but what exactly is VB4?

I knew there was something to do with VB4! Too bad we won't be getting it till later this year though... I was actually looking forward to it.

Just to clarify, doing a vB4 upgrade wasn't a "reason" for the Takeover, but we had intended to do it at the same time so as to tie it into the event. While we've already got our license for it, the current 4.0.2 is missing some very important features and bug fixes that are promised for 4.0.3. When that comes out, we'll probably have a couple of weeks of testing behind closed doors before we go live with it.

Just my opinion and experience, but I've always gone for newer software, even beta updates, and I never encounter bugs that can't be worked around. I've had several open beta and debug enabled programs in the past (Back in 1997, I had a rare debug enabled version of Incoming for the PC, in 2008 I've used beta versions of RobotC during the FIRST Tech Challenge, I have the second release candidate of MUGEN, and there's one thing I have been working on that I can't talk about on this forum).
