I want to get a 360 so I can play Tales of Vesperia (of course), but I don't wanna buy a $300 system (Arcade version sux) for one game alone. Any ideas?

Note that I'm not very good a shooting games, so Halo's out of the question. >_>

EDIT: OK, maybe I'll rent Halo 3.

What about Eternal Sonata?
That looked pretty cool, There is also Viva Pinata and Banjo coming out soon...

When I'm recommending games for the Xbox 360, I tend to leave out Halo for two reasons:
1. Too obvious of an answer.
2. So many people have a problem with the game.

So, I won't say that. Since you said you're not good at FPS, I won't say Call of Duty 4 either.

That out of way, here's what I recommend outside of Tales of Vesperia (even though it's really sweet!):

*Soul Calibur IV. Especially if you're looking to go for an Xbox Live Gold subscription to keep the fighting going. Oh yeah, create a character mode is addicting, especially when it comes to recreating your favorite characters (I ended up creating Tales characters and a couple of internet celebrities).
*Rock Band. A great game to get into...if you can afford the high price for everything you need to play. Also, get others together for the game for a grand time.

Ones to look into:
*Bioshock. Okay, it's a FPS but it's amazing. That's why I said you might want to check it out.
*Dead Rising. This is tough for me to recommend. 1. It's highly difficult (some design flaws contribute to difficulty). 2. If you're going to play your 360 on an SDTV, you're going to have a hard time reading the text. However, the pleasure of taking out literally hundreds of zombies in different ways is just great.

Be careful!:
*Eternal Sonata. This was the reason I wanted an Xbox 360 in the first place. Only problem is...it ended up being such a disappointment for me. So, yeah, I don't recommend it but I'll just mention it here.

Oh yeah, if you want to look into its limited Backward Compatibility for original Xbox games:
*Jet Set Radio Future. This is one of the games before I got into Halo that justified me owning the original Xbox. This was when Sega was still making good games and still feels highly unique. Oh yeah, there's the other one I used for justifying.
*Ninja Gaiden. If you can handle this challenging game, it's going to be a blast.

No problem with Halo here I just think it's a tad overrated :p

Seconding Bioshock though. It's not a straight-up shooting game, it has some RPG elements thrown in so you might find it a little more playable than your average shooter.

try sonic mega collection plus. all the genesis games you want for a low price.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mass Effect yet. I don't have a 360 yet, but if I ever did most of the ones mentioned here are indeed on my must have list. Mass Effect falls among those titles since it's a pretty deep sci-fi RPG and got some rave reviews from what I've seen.
