For the second of our speculation contests, we'd like for you all to guess to origins of the (Japanese) name of the new Professor for Black & White.
In every main series Pokémon game to date, a Pokémon Professor has given your character their first Pokémon and set them off in their adventure. He's what we've had so far.
Dr. Yukinari Ōkido (オーキド ユキナリ博士) - オーキッド Ōkiddo, Orchid. 大木戸 Ōkido is a Japanese family name and placename. Literally, big-tree family.
Dr. Utsugi (ウツギ博士) - ウツギ Utsugi, Deutzia.
Dr. Odamaki (オダマキ博士) - オダマキ Odamaki, Aquilegia.
Dr. Nanakamado (ナナカマド博士) - ナナカマド Nanakamado, Rowan tree.
As you can see, all the professors so far have been references to plants. This is something that's carried over to the English versions of the games, though the English names were all based on different plants (with the exception of Nanakamado/Rowan). That's no guarantee that they'll continue the pattern, but we'd expect most of your guesses will follow along those lines.
We don't expect you to get the exact name right, but we're looking for you to try and get as close as possible with the origin of the name. The winner will be whoever's guess is closest. Assuming that it's a plant, then we'll be looking at whoever had a plant closest to the actual species that inspired the name in terms of being a related species, not for whoever gets a plant that sounds most like the plant that gave the inspiration.
We'd strongly advise that you include a link to some source, so we can easily identify which plant (or whatever) you think it will be. We'd also like it if you'd include a sentence or two about why you picked that particular plant (or whatever) for your guess, if you have any specific reasons you think it's going to be the one.
Remember also, while you can discuss things and make as many guesses as you like, only your final guess counts. So if you're the 10th person to suggest the same thing, but the first 9 people changed their minds, and you didn't, then if that ended up being the right answer, you'd win.
In the event that they totally break with tradition and there is no Professor in a similar role to the previous games, the winner will be chosen based off of the name origin of the NPC who gives the player their first Pokémon.
This thread will be closed in a weeks time for our 3rd speculation contest. In the event that the information is leaked or announced before the end of that period, the thread will be closed immediately, and the closest guess before that will win. Otherwise, the winner will be decided when we actually find out what will be in the games.
