CHAPTER ONE

It was a beautiful morning in Cherrygrove. The sun was shining through everyone’s window. Everything shined from the morning dew and the rain from the night before. The grass was wet and cold to the touch, but a wonderful sight to look at. The sandy bottomed lake stirred with fish. It was the perfect day for fisherman to try to catch the big one. Pokemon would be all mixed around and the temperature would be cool from the surface of the water to the deepest area. The rocks around the lake seemed more eroded but it looked better with the simple erosion that took place. The town was rather small and surrounded by forest. There were two simple businesses in that town and one was the Pokemon Center and one was the Supply Mart. The rest of the town was made up of small mahogany wood houses. That was all that made up the simple little town.

Brian shot up like toast out of his bed. He was ready for his new Pokemon Journey. He planned every little detail. It was in his plan if significant or not. He, like most ten year olds were excited to start there journey. He was allowed to travel and get his first Pokemon now. He would collect badges and move across the region of Johto meeting new Pokemon and catching them. He was excited more and more anytime he thought about going out and getting his Pokemon.

He slid his feet out of the bed and sat up. His messy brown hair was in the way of his green eyes. Not to mention that it seemed all over the place. He moved his hair out of his eyes and slowly rose himself out of bed. He was thin and tall for his age. Most ten year olds weren’t as tall as he was. His skin was tan because he liked to go outside and pretend that he was in a Pokemon battle. He was in a white t shirt and black shorts when he arose. That was what he typically slept in at night.

Brian moved over to his closet. He moved discreetly over to his closet, trying not to disturb anyone downstairs or upstairs. There really were only two people he could disturb. It was his little brother, Sam, and the Beast. He walked into his closet and picked out some clothes. He grabbed a black t shirt and pants to match the shirt. He slid out and into his clothes without a sound. He then put on a gray jacket. It had two black stripes on the sleeves.

“It’s nine o’clock,” Brian read his clock, “I’ve got an hour and thirty minutes to get there.”

Brian eyed a yellow book bag in the corner of his room. He walked across the wooden floor to get it. The book bag had one huge pocket and the very top. Another one that was only a little small was in front of that one. Then two little side pockets and a net and cell phone holder in the side of it.

Brian tip toed to the door of his room. The Beast was only a room away. He opened his door as quietly as he could. He did not want to wake the Beast up because it might cease his plan of leaving for a journey. It would be likely that it would find a way to stop him from going out on his journey.

His door slowly opened. It creaked all the way to the wall. Brian closed his eyes tight in hopes that the Beast would not be disturbed. He walked discreetly down the hall and started down the stairs. He thought he had it. His door did not disturb anyone at all so all he had to do was make it down the rest of the way and then he could get out the door and nothing would be in his way.

He stepped on the bottom step.

“CREEEEEAAAAAKKKK!”

“Brian!”

There went the Beast. He was so close to getting out without disturbing her. But of course he had to come in contact with…

His step mother.

“Yes, Ava.” He turned and said as sweetly as he could. He bit his tongue waiting for her response.

“Why weren’t you up watching your little brother?” She asked angrily. She stamped her feet on the ground.

“Since when was I supposed to watch Sam?” He asked her.

“He told you yesterday,” she started, “do you not remember?”

“He never told me anything,” Brian retorted, “plus I’m ten I’m not legally allowed to watch him.”

“So what,” Ava argued, “you were still supposed to watch him for me while I went shopping.”

“He never told me.” Brian said angrily.

“Don’t you get an attitude with me,” Ava snapped, “You’ll pick your ass up off the damn ground.”

Brian turned around and started to head toward the door. He walked and opened the door. He stepped one foot out of the door.

“Where do you think that you’re going?” Ava asked, putting her orange hair up in a pony tail.

“To New Bark Town.” Brian said.

“Not today,” Ava said, “I’m holding you back so I can go shopping and you will have to watch your brother.”

“That’s not fair!” Brian yelled.

“Too bad,” Ava yelled, “life ain’t damn fair!”

Brian wanted to punch her. He could not stand her. Since his dad died and his mom ran away she had became a major pain. He wished she would just go away. Brian felt a tear come to his eye. He wanted to go so bad to get his Pokemon and start his journey.

“They’ll be out of Pokemon,” Brian said to her while she stepped out the door, “I won’t be able to choose and wait longer and it’s all your damn fault!”

“What’d you just say to me?” She asked in a sassy tone.

“Nothing.” Brian said.

“That’s what I thought.” Ava said and walked out the door.

Ava was a heavy set woman. She had freckles all over her pale color skin. She could never tan. He would only burn and turn back to white. She had orange hair that was straight and touched her back. She had it up in a pony tail when she had left. She was wearing a white tank top shirt and blue shorts that only reached down to her thighs. It was truly an appalling sight.

Sam came out of his room and giggled at Brian. Brian turned and gave him an angry look. Brian hated that his brother was always on Ava’s side and did anything that he could to get Brian in trouble.

“Why didn’t you tell me you little brat,” Brian yelled, “now I can’t get my Pokemon because of that stupid bitch.”

“I’m going to call her and tell her what you just said.” Sam said fickly.

“I couldn’t care.” Brian said.

Sam ran to the kitchen and grabbed the phone. Brian was just waiting to be yelled at. Ava was always treating him like crap and he couldn’t stand it.

“Yes, Ava,” Sam started, “Brian called you Stupid B-word.”

Brian rolled his eyes knowing that his brother was probably making the call up. He could tell because Ava talked so loud that he could hear her on the phone.

“Okay I’ll let him know.” Sam said. He slammed the phone on the hook.

“What’d she say?” Brian asked sarcastically. He was acting like he cared.

“That you are not allowed to get your Pokemon for a whole year.” Sam lied. His tone was like a little child when they lie. His tone just gave it away.

“Too bad you never called.” Brian rolled his eyes.

“If you play a game with me I’ll tell Ava to let you go tomorrow instead of waiting a whole year.” Sam said.

Brian thought about this. He thought about how he could play a game and possibly get away with sneaking out. But what was his brother going to do if he left? Brian didn’t care at that point. He knew where lunch food was. It wasn’t like The Stupid Bitch was going to be gone the whole time.

“Okay then.” Brian said. He was thinking of a game that he and his brother could play. He walked to his brother and ruffled his blonde hair.

Sam was about seven years old. He was small for his age and was the shortest in his class. That was the way Brian was until about the second grade. He had short blonde hair that was soft to the touch. His skin wasn’t as dark as Brian’s because he didn’t go outside that often. He was wearing a blue, full peace pajama set. It was light blue with different truck designs on it. His eyes were green like Brian’s. He had a bad attitude toward his brother and getting his Pokemon so he sabotaged his plan to get one.

“What are we going to play?” Sam asked. Brian kept thinking about what they were going to play.

“Let’s play hide-and-seek.” Brian said. He thought about how that could even work. That was perfect! When Sam went to hide Brian could sneak out the door and head to New Bark Town to find the laboratory.

“Okay I want to seek!” Sam said.

“How about I seek you?” Brian said.

“Fine,” Sam said, “you have to count down from fifty though.”

“Okay.” Brian said kindly.

Sam ran off to hide from Brian. Brian braced himself against the wooden wall next to the front door. He began to count down from fifty. Sam kept scurrying around trying to find the perfect place to hide. Brian wanted him to climb into the washer machine and press the little white buttons so it would kill him. Sometimes Brian thought terrible thoughts about people.

“Forty-six, forty-five.” Brian continued to count.

Sam finally stopped squirming around and all was silent. Brian grabbed his yellow book bag off the ground. He slid both arms through the sleeves and tip toed in front of the door. He slowly turned the knob. He opened the door hoping that creaking and noises would not commence. He pulled on the door.

“CREEEAAAKKKK.”

“Oh come on!” Brian yelled. His brother poked his head out. Brian looked him in the eyes. He shot a dirty look and then took off. He stepped out and shut the door.

“Where are you going?” Sam asked.

“I’m getting my Pokemon you little brat!” Brian yelled.

Brian held himself against the door. Sam tried with all of his might to push the door open. Brian kept it shut. It came open just a little and then it slammed from the force that Brian put on the door.

“I’m calling Ava.” Sam yelled.

“Oh the stupid bitch!” Brian yelled.

“Why are you cursing?” Sam asked angrily.

“Because I can!” Brian said.

He didn’t want to hold on to the door anymore. He wasn’t going to get anywhere if he just stood there holding his brother. Inside the house. He didn’t think of what he could do. He then just took off and ran. He didn’t know if his brother was going to chase him or if he was going to call Ava on him. Either way his brother wasn’t going to get him in any trouble. Or that was what he thought.

He saw the forest coming ahead. The route number read Route 21 and New Bark Town. He took off past the sign and followed the path. He ran for a minute or two and then he stopped. He bent over and held his stomach trying to catch his breath. He observed his surroundings. The forest was lush. Sun peaked in through the leaves of the canopy. The leaves were a nice green and the trees were tall and wide. There was tall grass all around. You had to be careful in the tall grasses because you could get seriously hurt if you weren’t careful. Wild Pokemon hid and made habitats in the tall grasses.

Brian thought it was a pretty sight. It was a little chilly. He was glad that he had put the jacket on before he left. It might now have been a pleasant trip if he didn’t grab it. He began to walk along the path that was made out. There were no trainers leaving so that was good. It seemed like no one was there but a couple of adults training their Pokemon. Brian walked up to a woman who was training.

“Um,” Brian started nervously, “can you point me out where New Bark Town is?”

The woman turned and looked at Brian and smiled sweetly. Her golden brown hair was tied in a bun. She was wearing a pink tank top and blue jean made shorts. She seemed eager to help Brian out.

“It’s over in that direction,” she pointed smiling sweetly, “there is no one over there so you might want to pay attention to where you are going.”

“Thanks.” Brian said. He looked down at her Pokemon. It was a small brown Pokemon that was up to Brian’s calf. It had a white O shape in the middle of its stomach. It raised itself up with its tail. Its tail was brown and black striped all the way around its tail. It had two small eyes that were brown that were bright in the corner of its eyes. It had tiny arms and feet with black ears that were pink on the inside.

“Sentret, Sen.” The little Pokemon said.

“What kind of Pokemon is that?” Brian asked smiling down at it. It smiled back at him. The Pokemon must not have been too timid because it seemed rather delighted to see Brian.

“That’s a Sentret.” She explained.

“Well it is really cute,” Brian said, “I’ll have to catch me one when I get my Pokemon.”

“Oh you’re going to get a Pokemon?” She asked him.

“Yeah.” Brian said.

“Well there are three that you can choose from.” She said.

“Yup,” Brian said, “there is Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile.”

“Yeah those are the ones.” She said

“Did you ever choose a starter Pokemon?” Brian asked.

“No,” she said, “my dad gave me a Sunkern but its back at home, I’m training Sentret right now. I want to see it evolve into a Furret.”

“That would be cool.” Brian said.

“Well you’d better get going,” she told him, “you don’t want to miss getting your Pokemon.”

“Oh, right,” Brian said, “nice talking to you.”

“Nice talking to you too.” She said to him.

Brian began to walk away. She looked at him and smiled.

“That face,” she said, “why does it look so familiar?”

Brian continued on the path. He loved observing the scenery around him. It was really pretty. The trees stretched way above Brian’s height, tall and colorful grasses all over. It was wonderful that Pokemon lived here too. He saw a couple of bird Pokemon flying around. He couldn’t wait to try to catch one. He came across a sign. “New Bark Town 3 Miles Ahead.”

“This is awesome,” Brian said, “I’m going to get my Pokemon soon.”

Brian continued to walk along the path. He began to look up and beamed. Usually he faked a smile to fool people that he was happy. This time he really was. He was away from his step mom. His dad died two years ago and his mother ran away when Sam was born. That was what everyone told Brian and Sam. Now he was away from his brother and evil step mom and was getting his Pokemon. He realized that if they ever came after him that he could fight them off with is new Pokemon. Possibly even kill them. That would have been a delight to Brian.

‘That woman was nice,’ Brian thought, ‘I’m glad she pointed out the direction of New Bark.’

Brian started to gleam up at the sky again. He kept on walking and looking up at the clear blue sky. There was not a cloud in sight. A couple of bird Pokemon flew from tree to tree.

Brian’s leg began to itch. He bent down and scratched it still looking up and walking. His leg kept itching. He continued to scratch it. When the itch began to be unbearable he finally looked down.

“Oh no!” Brian freaked out. He was standing in tall grass.

The worst part was that he was alone.

All alone.
