Chapter 1
---------------------
Brian stood at the end of the wharf, leaning against the railing. The
surf knocked against the pilings rhythmically, incessantly. The moored boats
bobbed up and down, waves slapping their hulls. A milky fog had descended
upon Fuchsia City in the night, and the rising sun rendered it pearlescent.
The Pidgy's began their morning cries, and Rattata scampered among the
coiled ropes. Brian pulls a beanie over his frayed, neck length, auburn hair.
He shoves his hands in the pockets of his open blue jacket, and walks back
along the wharf. Brian leaves the shoreline, without a backward glance. He
heads through the town, eventually arriving at his house. Brian opens the
front door, and shuts it quickly. Wouldn't want to let the early morning chill
in. "Hello?"
"In here" his mom returned, from the kitchen. She was sitting in one of their
old wooden chairs, holding a cup of steaming coffee. "Made up your mind?"
she asked.
"Yeah, I'm going"
She looked down into her mug, biting her bottom lip. "You'll be the second
son I've had leave on a Pokemon journey. Just make sure you come back."
Brian walked over to where his mom was seated, and rested his hand on her
shoulder. "I will." He stayed there, with her, for a few minutes. Then,
taking his backpack from where it lay on the table, departed.
As if on queue, the skies opened up, and a steady patter of rain
began to fall. Brian's beat up Puma's smacked on the slick sidewalk as he ran
to the Train Station. Ran away from Fuchsia, ran away from the shadowy
dojo and ninja gym master. Ran to a new beginning, a new life.
The Station came into view, and Brian slowed his pace to a brisk
walk. He quickly stepped under the overhang, and checked the ornate clock
that adorned the wall of the Train Station. 6:28, the train that would take
him to Pallet would arrive at 6:45. He saw Marie, sitting on a bench by
herself. Brian began walking towards her, and Marie, seeing him, stood
up. "Hey," Brian greeted her, "Don't really want to give you a hug 'cause I'm
so-"
She kissed him.
"Oh..." Brian started, dazed. Marie cut him off, "Are you ready?"
"Yes; yes, I am. I have my backpack, my ticket, my money... I think that's
all"
"And your mom? She was ok?"
"I don't know, it doesn't really matter. I want to go, I'm going to go, she'll
accept it."
"Well, Jake did die... out there."
"Jake was screwing with the wrong kind of people. If you fuck with Team
Rocket you get fucked. I know that; he knew that, he was just too damn full
of manly valor. And what did it get him? It got him killed."
"I know it did, I know, I know. Stop talking like that."
"Sorry, I just... sorry"
The train pulls up, and passengers begin boarding. "I better go, hey Marie...
it's been nice knowing you." Brian smiled, feebly.
"Wait, wait... take this." Marie passed an envelope over to Brian, and folded
his hand over it. "Maybe, someday, I'll see you."
"Fuchsia City, 6th Gym." And with that, Brian boarded the train. He sat near
the window, pushed his bag underneath the seat, and watched Marie. She
was standing alone, and as the train left, she disappeared into the fog. Brian
opened the envelope, and inside was a picture. A portrait of Marie
smiling. "She was a beautiful girl." Brian thought. He crumpled the picture
into a ball, and threw it out the window into the pouring rain.
