Chapter 1 - Face-off

• A young man, about seventeen, with a white vest and a red Mohican watches a television set in a dark, dank room.
• On the television set, a battle between Will Wynne, who is vying for his fifth Badge, and Morty, the Gym Leader of Ecruteak City is about to get underway.
• The commentators expect to see Will’s Nidorino, Golduck, and Heracross, as they are his signature Pokémon.
• They mention that the last Johto trainer to be Champion of the Indigo Plateau was Terrence Starr, Will’s uncle.
• Will steps on to the field, noticing that it is his biggest crowd yet with something like 1200 people in the audience.
• Morty’s opening Pokémon is Misdreavus, Will’s is Heracross.
• In the audience, Will’s brothers, Max, 14, and Frankie, 12, discuss the battle.
• Heracross defeats Misdreavus, but is taken with it as it uses Destiny Bond.
• The red haired teen clearly wants Will to lose. He talks with an unseen friend, “Chubby”, who stands behind him.
• Morty’s next Pokémon is Haunter, Will’s is Golduck.
• Haunter defeats Golduck.
• Will’s next Pokémon is his Nidorino.
• Frankie is scared that Will will lose, but Max believes it all to be arrogant showmanship, wanting to make it look close.
• Nidorino is able to defeat both Haunter and Morty’s final Pokémon, Gengar.
• The red haired teen is so angry that he puts his foot through the TV, saying that it’s time Will got what was coming to him.

Chapter 2 - Disaster

• Will, Max, and Frankie go for an evening walk through their hometown, Goldenrod.
• Frankie is impressed by Will’s battle against Morty. Will is not.
• After some goading, Max agrees to battle Will down an alley.
• Max is scared, as he is always beaten and humiliated when he battles Will. He makes it his aim to knock out one of Will’s Pokémon, but takes it back, instead making his aim to make Will think that one of his Pokémon might be knocked out.
• Max opens with Wooper. Will opens with Golduck.
• Golduck easily defeats Wooper.
• Max sends out Zubat. Will withdraws Golduck, and sends out Nidorino.
• Zubat does better against Nidorino than it has done in the past, but is also easily despatched.
• Max’s final Pokémon is his strongest, Mankey. He taught it Focus Blast with a TM that he spent weeks saving up for.
• Mankey uses Focus Blast, but Heracross defeats it by using Counter, and sending the attack back. [I know the mechanics of this are wrong, but this is what was written before I realised that, and I’m leaving it as it is.]
• A group of four teenagers arrived, blocking the brothers in the alley.
• The red haired teen from Chapter 1 is present, as well as: a leader who is wearing a leather jacket and has a shaved head; a girl with short, dyed blue hair; and a fat guy who seems out of place wearing dirty, old clothes.
• A Graveler takes out Heracross, who tries to protect the brothers.
• Will is held by a Poliwrath, Max by an Ursaring, and Frankie by a Machoke.
• The leader demands Will’s Gym Badge, but Will does not carry them.
• The red haired teen is infuriated, but he is calmed by the leader who instead demands Will’s Pokémon.
• The leader makes the red haired teen, Spike, go and collect the Poké Balls from Will’s belt.
• On the suggestion of the fat member of the group, Chubby, the leader orders Spike to also collect Max’s Pokémon.
• Will is infuriated and Spike uses this as an excuse to have Poliwrath hit his head against the wall. Will’s nose is broken.
• The gang leave.
• Will is unconscious.
• Frankie cries, and Max soon follows suit.

Chapter 3 - Letters

• Lydia Wynne, the brothers’ mother, forbids any of them to go outside by themselves without giving her detailed information about where they would be, who with, and when they’d be back. They are not allowed to leave the house alone, and are not allowed out at all after dark.
• The brothers are not bothered by this, as they are all sombre. Will mopes around the house feeling sorry for himself. Frankie locks himself in his room. Max is gripped by sudden fits of rage or depression.
• A package from their Uncle Terry (the earlier mentioned Terrence Starr) arrives. It contains a letter saying that he is safe, and a package containing a Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.
• The letter explains that Uncle Terry is ‘making a real difference in the world’, which is why he left his post as Champion of the Indigo Plateau five years ago.
• The brothers run upstairs to distribute the Pokémon.
• Will takes Charmander.
• Max and Frankie both want Squirtle, Will gives it to Frankie, reasoning that Max already has a Water type (Wooper) which he assures him he will get back.
• Will and Frankie battle.
• Both Charmander and Squirtle are extremely inexperienced and seem to be babies.
• Will goes easy on Frankie, and Frankie is able to win. Max is furious that Will goes easy on Frankie as Will never goes easy on Max.
• Next, Max battles Frankie.
• Max’s Bulbasaur seems more stable and mature than the other two, although it is just as small.
• Bulbasaur is able to defeat Squirtle.
• Once inside, they realise that Will has disappeared.
• In the morning, Frankie finds a note from Will addressed to him and Max saying that if he’s not back in two days they should send police to search the Ruins of Alph. He tells them not to tell their mother or the police before then.
• Max insists that he and Frankie must go and help.
• Frankie reluctantly agrees.

Chapter 4 - Fans

• Max and Frankie leave home.
• Frankie is reluctant, but Max insists that Will needs their help as he no longer has his strong Pokémon.
• As they walk out of Goldenrod, Bulbasaur walks ahead of the group while Squirtle grabs on to Frankie’s leg.
• When they reach the National Park, they meet two girls, Anna and Becky.
• Anna and Becky are big fans of Will and recognise them as his younger brothers. They want their autographs.
• Max says no, but Frankie wants to. It starts an argument between the brothers.
• Frankie lets slip that they’re going to help Will, the girls want to help.
• Max absolutely forbids it.
• Max takes Frankie away, and Bulbasaur prevents the girls from following.
• Max tells Frankie off, telling him that talking to girls like that will lead to their cover being blown, he refers to Will having run away from home the previous year, and their mother having found out where he was, and having the police go after him.
• Max and Frankie stop for lunch.
• Max takes them into a bush to be stubborn.
• While there some Bug Pokémon arrive, and Max has Bulbasaur practise against them.
• Unfortunately, more and more Bug Pokémon arrive, and the brothers and their Pokémon are soon overwhelmed. Squirtle is poisoned and the brothers are repeatedly stung.
• Suddenly they all fall asleep.
• Max wakes up in a bedroom, being nursed by Anna, one of the girls from earlier.
• Anna tells Max that Frankie is in the room next door with her cousin, Becky, and that they are in Becky’s house in Ecruteak.
• Max wants to get to the Ruins of Alph as soon as possible, but Anna insists that he recovers first.

Chapter 5 – Recovery

• Max is keen to get going and leave Becky’s house, but Anna is insistent that they stay a little longer.
• Becky takes Anna upstairs to try and break the tension.
• Max and Frankie have an argument, each blaming the other for their current predicament. Max refuses to admit that they needed help against the Beedrill in the previous chapter.
• Frankie storms off and heads upstairs to hang out with Anna and Becky because he is tired of Max.
• Anna goes downstairs to try and placate Max.
• Frankie is worried about how timid his Squirtle is, but Becky assures him that it will become more confident as it grows.
• Becky tells Frankie that he should be more patient with Max, suggesting that Max might just be trying to be strong because he knows he has to in the absence of Will, rather than just being self absorbed and arrogant.
• Meanwhile, Max and Anna are arguing more ferociously than before.
• Anna accuses Max of Pokémon cruelty, Max accuses Anna of being a “mum”.
• Eventually, Anna storms off upstairs.
• Frankie comes downstairs and apologises, the brothers reconcile.
• Max explains that Will is always mean to him and that he is never able to be the star.
• Frankie explains that Max is always mean to him and so he feels he has to turn to Will.
• They head upstairs and demand to leave.
• Becky convinces Anna to at least check on the Pokémon.
• Bulbasaur and Squirtle seem fine so they agree to get going but Anna says that she will only let them go if they agree to let Anna and Becky come with them as she doesn’t trust them to look after the Pokémon.
• Max reluctantly agrees and they head to the Ecruteak Mart.
• Meanwhile, back in the National Park, two figures dressed in black leather jumpsuits and helmets that obscure their faces are searching in the bushes where Max and Frankie were attacked.
• They mention that there are small rewards for finding Will, Max and Frankie, but that is not the reason they are looking for them.
• They believe that finding Max and Frankie will lead them to Will, who has an alter ego they are interested in capturing.

Chapter 6 - Journey

• Max, Anna, Frankie and Becky head towards the Ruins of Alph.
• They decide to train before they get there.
• Bulbasaur masters Vine Whip and learns a few unnamed techniques.
• Max tries to catch a Pokémon but has trouble.
• Anna and Becky offer to help but Max refuses.
• Frankie accepts their help to catch a Pokémon.
• Together they train Squirtle to stop holding on to Frankie’s legs.
• Scared of a Spinarak, Squirtle runs into a tree, causing an Aipom to fall out.
• Frankie manages to capture the Aipom, which has a similar personality to Squirtle.
• In Max’s training, a Growlithe appears. Everyone is stunned by the sight of such a rare Pokémon.
• Bulbasaur struggles in the battle but Max pushes on, refusing help, desperate to catch the Growlithe.
• As it becomes clear that Bulbasaur is not going to win Anna intervenes by having Jigglypuff put the Growlithe to sleep.
• Max is able to catch the Growlithe and reluctantly thanks Anna for her help.
• The group continues to travel.
• Squirtle and Aipom hold on to each other for support.
• Bulbasaur and Growlithe compete with each other for supremacy.
• The group arrive at the Ruins of Alph when they are stopped by Chubby.
• Chubby offers Anna and Becky the chance to run away but they do not.
• He sends out a Muk which he has trap them and all of their Pokémon in its sludge.
• Chubby calls Spike, making reference to the fact that he would never speak to ‘King’ before he spoke to Spike.
• Spike arrives.
• Max insults Spike.
• Spike backhands Max.
• Spike generally harasses all of them, particularly Anna.
• Spike explains that under normal circumstances he would take them all prisoner but that two black clad figures, Hunters X and Y, have been following them and he doesn’t want them anywhere near this HQ or anywhere near them when they head to Ecruteak Dance Theatre the following day.
• He lets them go on the strict condition that they don’t come anywhere near the gang again.

Chapter 7 – Separation

• Max and Anna argue in the middle of a Pokémon Center.
• Anna insists that they give up the mission to save Will because it is too dangerous.
• Max refuses.
• Anna and Becky leave.
• The brothers regroup outside and discuss what to do next.
• They decide that the best course of action is to lead Hunters X and Y to Ecruteak Dance Theatre where they’ll catch Spike, Chubby and the others, and hand them over to the police, resulting in Will and Max getting their Pokémon back.
• They decide to spend the night in Violet, look up what time the shows at the Dance Theatre are and head there tomorrow.
• Frankie says that Max and Anna made sure that the Hunters won’t have lost their trail.
• Max claims that this was intentional.
• They are wary that they shouldn’t allow themselves to be caught.
• They decide they’ll make sure they have a room that’s not too high up so they can escape using Bulbasaur’s vines if they have to.
• They find a cheap, rundown hostel and get a room on the first floor.
• Max enters all of their details, including their full names, phone numbers and room number in the guestbook.
• They look up the times for the Dance Theatre on the hostel’s computers: five and seven in the evening.
• Frankie’s Pokémon (Squirtle and Aipom) sleep in the bed with him.
• Max’s Pokémon (Bulbasaur and Growlithe) sleep by the door, competing with each other to see who can stay awake the longest, but both fall asleep fairly quickly.
• They are awoken by knocks on the door and demands to be let in the room.
• They quickly realise that this must be the Hunters.
• On Max’s command, Bulbasaur lowers Squirtle and Aipom, who are both crying, out of the window.
• Bulbasaur then lowers Frankie out of the window as the Hunters continue to shout threats and demand to be let in.
• A bone breaks through the door as Bulbasaur is lowering Frankie out of the window.
• The door is heavily damaged, Max can see the two figures and a Marowak through the door.
• Bulbasaur lowers Max out of the window but as it does the Hunters manage to get into the room.
• Max and Frankie, who has returned Squirtle and Aipom to their Poké Balls, are forced to run, abandoning Bulbasaur.
