The amount of "HGSS RAPED MY CHILDHOOD" or "I DON'T LIKE THIS ONE THING, RUINED FOREVER" posts that traverse the endless boundaries of the interwebz is astounding.

Even before the game, I noticed most people had come to the conclusion that HG/SS wouldn't match G/S. And yet, people seemed to still be expecting some "God's Gift to Pokemon Fans" game with each and every detail fine tuned to that specific fan's dream.
Obviously they didn't get what they wanted, so their first instinct is to cry foul.

What do you guys think about it?
Think the game lived up to expectation? Below/above?
Did it "rape" your childhood? (I'll let you interpret that question however way you want)

As for me, I've got my fair share of nits and picks like any other fan but otherwise I can honestly say it exceeded expectations.

(I'm also still pondering on how some people can even compare a "disappointing" remake to rape)

I agree it has exceeded my expectiations.

It's very hard to understand why people would dismiss the game from a couple things not happening the way they wanted it to. I personally think it's an amazing game. And, personally, I think it's THE best. Sure, I'd like some more trainers to battle in this game, or a little more emphasis on the Rockets, since they still disappear way too easily, but it's not gamebreaking.

Ok.. I never played GSC so I can't say it ruined my childhood or something.

But did it live up to my expectations? No... IT WENT ABOVE THEM. This game is by far the best game in the history of Pokémon, and the idiots who don't like it can go to hell.

I mean it sold 1.5 million copies over the weekend! It beat Platinum by .5 million in just two days.

Isn't the "OMG NEW INSTALLMENTS/REMAKES MY CHILDHOOD IS RUINED FOREVER BAWW" normal within this fandom?

I don't feel that HG/SS has been disappointing at all; from what I've seen, it's actually better than I thought it would be. I'm really excited for it, especially since I was a little disappointed by FR/LG. All those were were just graphic updates for the most part. HG/SS has so many new things to go with the old stuff that it makes it almost feel like a brand new game.

It's normal with all fandoms.

There are some people who wanted this to be a straight port of the GBC game.

Honestly, I think Gamefreak did a very good job catering to the old fans with this, especially with things like the GB Player.

What really gets me is all the stupid questions.

"HEY DUDE GREAT WALKTHROUGH I HAVE A QUESTION CAN YOU BREED IN THIS GAME?"

yeah.

hehehe, I think they deserved it. Ever saw what kind of "evidence" for hg/ss some people came up with? Lifeless people. But who knows, maybe I'll have the same thing with R/S remakes (altough very unlikely, especially if they'll add a GBA player like in HG/SS)

I've only played up to Violet City but from what I've seen I like it better than all of the D/P/Pt series and far better than R/S/E.
Crystal was my favourite game and I followed all the updates on Bulbapedia once I found out there was going to be G/S remakes.
Now playing it, I honestly can't see how anyone could claim that these new games 'raped' their childhood because really I cant see anything wrong with them.
Well done Nintendo, now release them worldwide and quickly.

I haven't played the game, but from what I've seen on the interwebs, I must say these games look better than I'd expected when they were announced back in May (I am pessimistic after all).
A lot of cool features being added and all, like Kanto in all its glory with Seafoam Islands and Viridian Forest, rematches with Gym Leaders, etc.

BUT though it exceeds my expectations, it doesn't go near my dreams of what the game would have looked like if it were perfect.

And there is one thing that really annoys you, and that is the fact that the following Pokémon is always the one on top of the party, and moreover, the fact that there is not a single option to simply turn off the feature. It may have been fun to let the unevolved starter follow you, like Pikachu in Yellow, but being forced to let a big Lugia, a Snorlax or a Lapras on land follow you all the time. And the fact that it constantly moves as if it's walking when your character is standing still seems very annoying.

Then there's the fact that I will feel too old to play it (I will be about to finish secondary/high school by the time it comes out in English).

But on the whole, I can't complain. I'm too happy that the games are just there. GF have put a great deal of work in it and weren't lazy to cut out big parts.

I loved GSC and HGSS definitely exceeded my expectations! It certainly looks like the best game in the series, and I am thrilled to see Kanto and Johto come alive on the DS. The fact that it exists is enough for me. I facepalm at the people that think the game is terrible because of some nitpicks or the fact that it's not a carbon copy of the original. I mean, really? REALLY? What HGSS did was improve most of GSC's faults, not rape it. Take off your damn nostalgia goggles or go and weep while playing your GSC ROMS. :/

I didn't like GSC much back in the days. As such, I had rock bottom hopes for HGSS. I was expecting a remake akin to FRLG.

I got what I expected.

It's a mixed bag, though. These remakes do fix almost all of the design flaws of GSC, and take after Platinum with superb storytelling and characterization, not to mention the removal of as few features as possible (I wonder why they had to take out Contests yet again, though. If there's no competitions, at least have Poffins or whatever so one doesn't has to resort to an outside game to get certain Pokémon). Unfortunately, it just feels samey, as I see it.

We did get a raise in levels at least after the first half of the game. Apparently, all 2nd Gen Pokémon can be obtained before Kanto now. There's rematches, thankfully. Kanto isn't as devoided of life now. Overall, the game this should have been years ago. And yet, they blew it at places, such as initial Gym Leader rosters. Yeah, I wasn't expecting any changes, given FRLG, but they could've given us nice surprises and better Teams here and there. We got nothing.

Sadly, the plot also seems to be about the same. At least it's expanded upon well enough, but still. Oh well, I'm alone in this anyway. Watching Team Rocket whine once again isn't my idea of fun.

And let's not forget the copy/paste Battle Frontier. There was no need to keep the same Brains. None at all. It's a shame, really. They could've done a lot of interesting new characters or have some impressive surprises, even keeping the facilities the same as Platinum's. It's not as if the rest of the game demanded so much they couldn't take a little time to design new characters or a couple comebacks.

I'm not a nostalgic person, so I don't think these games ruin the originals or crap. It's just... the game I expected to see. Nothing too flattering or exciting, but not bad.

Actually I heard the gym leaders are harder in HGSS than in GSC. I hear quite a lot about Bugsy and his Scyther's U-Turn attacks. And while Whitney's Miltank decresed by one level (pathetic that people are crying over that, especially since they were the same ones whining about how difficult the damn cow was originally.) it's apparently still hard to beat. I'm sure Falkner's Pokemon using Roost is going to provide quite a challenge, especially since they no longer have mud-slap to counter Cyndaquil. I'm just as disappointed as everyone else with the rosters, but if they're as challenging as people are saying then I'd take the incresed difficulty anyday. Plus the rematch rosters look godly and more than make up for that.

I could care less about the BF. I never bothered with them. In fact I was shocked GF actually went the extra mile and put it in HGSS. Even if it's the same as Platinum's.

The storyline and gameplay aren't going to change much obviously, after all it is a remake.

Honestly, people should realize that games will never be 100% the way they want it. Unless you work at GF or the company has an amazing ability to read minds then you have to overlook the minor quirks and enjoy the good things. Unless the game has glaring flaws and problems, but from what I've seen HGSS can't be too bad.

HGSS looks like it did a lot more than FR/LG in terms of remakes. Sadly most people only cared about FR/LG because they could get their precious Kanto/Johto Pokemon to play with in RSE instead of those bad, unoriginal Gen.III Digimon-ripoffs (sarcasm there btw.) I actually liked FR/LG since it gave me the chance to re-explore Kanto and enjoy the original games with the new updates. Many people hate the Sevii Islands but I thought they were fun.

Oh if you want to see true baaawing and drama go to the gamefaqs boards for both HG and SS. Trolls are already putting reviews up and the forums are going apeshit over them.

They wanted to keep it compatible with Platinum's Battle Frontier probably since Platinum is still the "main" game of this generation.
The Frontier Front, the place before the Battle Frontier, has some new stuff though, from what I've heard.

And, call me a fanboy or what have you but saying that we got nothing is kinda stretching it.
I'll admit the gym leader teams were disappointing, but there's quite a number of things that make up for it IMO.

The story is still more or less the same, but there really wasn't much they could do with it anyway. :U They could have Giovanni actually come back, but that would be like rehashing R/B/Y. They could tie a legendary to the story and be really corny, eh lol.

I respect your opinion though, at least it's not "LOL KOTONE IS NOT KRIS, RUINED FOREVER".

The game lived up to what I expected it to be. I laugh at all the people that are making big deals about it being "bad" or "nothing" compared to the original games. If they don't think its good, then they shouldn't play it. They should stop whining about it, and just deal with it. Other people like the game, so what if they don't?

GSC were the worst games in the series. Relied mostly on old content, relied on content that was shrunk, absence of an interesting plot, most of the new Pokemon did not evolve and were pathetically weak, incredibly weak NPC opponents and bosses, a new area that lacked a lot of its identity . . .

HGSS solves a handful of those problems, making it just OK instead of horrible.

Agree with pretty much everything you said.

To each his own...

Well, that's good to know. Falkner is much tougher than before at least, now matching up well enough with the other 1st Gym Leaders. Of course, I doubt any of them will survive Geodude. :p In any case, I might be in for a surprise, so that's all good.

I could care less about the BF. I never bothered with them. In fact I was shocked GF actually went the extra mile and put it in HGSS. Even if it's the same as Platinum's.
Well, I really like the Battle Frontier, and it's one of my favorite features since Emerald. I don't mind them keeping the same facilities, but keeping even the same Brains...

HGSS looks like it did a lot more than FR/LG in terms of remakes. It's only sustained by the 4th Gen features, which is why it seems to have done more than FRLG. I'll give it that it didn't remove features the egregious way FRLG did, or, lolz, the way Diamond/Pearl did. Other than that, it's just the game GSC should have been. It's not bad, though.

That aside, I'm glad someone else appreciates FRLG. I also enjoyed the games for that very reason, and the Sevii Islands were really fun as well. ^^

They wanted to keep it compatible with Platinum's Battle Frontier probably since Platinum is still the "main" game of this generation.
All that was needed to make them compatible was to keep the same Battle Facilities. That's it. The Brains could have been different (You only battle against Brains in Single Challenges. Wi-Fi and Multi make absolutely no difference), and that's my gripe. What can I say? I enjoy new characters. The more the merrier, and considering all, HGSS had the chance to bring in some cool surprises. What about Agatha, or even Leaf, now as Frontier Brains? And if not that, I would've welcomed new characters.

The Frontier Front, the place before the Battle Frontier, has some new stuff though, from what I've heard.
Apparently a house with more Move Tutors. :p

And, call me a fanboy or what have you but saying that we got nothing is kinda stretching it.

I was only referring to the non-rematch rosters and the lack of new Frontier Brains, respectively. I know this game brings many things to the table. Nothing too overly exciting beyond the return of Apricorns and fixing most of the GSC issues in my opinion, but it sure looks like a pretty good game in and of itself. Something I can't say of GSC or, again, Diamond/Pearl.

I respect your opinion though, at least it's not "LOL KOTONE IS NOT KRIS, RUINED FOREVER".
lolz, that's funny indeed. But thanks, I also respect your outlook. ^^

As much as I love Gold and Silver, I think HGSS lives up to if not exceeding my expectations.

The Frontier Brains were the same so that HGSS could watch battle videos from Platinum and vice-versa.

I don't know why so many people complain, either. HeartGold and SoulSilver are absolutely amazing, and if their new features are a taste of what is to come, I must say the future is delicious.

I'd like to personally thank Nintendo for copy-pasting the Battle Frontier. It was the only reason I was going to get Platinum but then I never got around to it. Now I can experience Johto *and* Platinum all in one $80 package. That's not in American Dollars, if you were wondering.

But the alleged raping never happened (how many times do you get to use that sentence?). I don't imagine it ever will. This game will not hold me down and make me play it until it's finished. I think it's going to be more of the other way around.

As a Bulbapedia admin it's hard not to know the details of the game. I've been scouring fansites and forums, looking for the details we've missed putting up. But I don't feel this will hinder my playing in any way: moreover it will enhance it. I won't be walking blindly into the wilderness: I'll have the game guide that's not a game guide... written partly by myself :D

I. WANT. IT. NOW.
