Hello, and welcome to our first ever Bulbabang! Over the next few weeks, we'll bring together Bulbagarden artists and writers for a fun collab event. This year, we'll have a collection of talented authors putting together an anthology of short stories, centering around our community voted theme of Everyday Life with Pokemon! Then, they'll work with artists, who will make an illustration based on that work. The end result will be something brand new and super fun!
Entering for Writers (take a look now!)
- The writing period opens now, and will close on Sunday, August 30 at 11:59 PM EST. Use this countdown to double check your work.
- At any time before the end of the writing period, writers should post their story in The Ratings Check Board. This will let it be visible to just mods and the author.
- You may disregard typical Ratings Check Board guidelines in this case, and post your thread as you normally would in the Library--we're just using it as a handy space for you to set up private threads. If you'd like to get a Ratings Check, please feel free to use the subforum as normal.
- Authors must post their story in The Ratings Check Board before the end of the writing period. You will have some time to edit and seek public feedback, but out of courtesy to our artists, please have a completed draft of your story ready to go!
- Guidelines for stories:
- Stories must be compliant with Bulbagarden Sitewide Rules and Workshop Rules.
- Stories must be more than 1,000 words and less than 4,000 words, as defined by this word counter.
- Stories must be set within the Pokemon franchise or otherwise be about Pokemon or Pokemon characters. You can use any aspect of the franchise that you'd like--no spinoff is too obscure--but to be kind to our artist friends, you should submit Pokemon fanfiction. This is not a good time to submit your crossover, original works, or non-Pokemon fanfics.
- Stories should incorporate the event theme, Everyday Life with Pokemon, in some major capacity. This is of course a little subjective, and we ask that you use your best judgment here! Please ask if you have any questions.
- When your story is complete, and before the writing period closes, please make an additional post in your story's thread with the following information:
- A 2-3 sentence summary of what the story is about. This will help narrow down things for artists, so be sure to include: what characters are in your story, what kinds of conflict or joy they may face, and the general tone of the story.
- The story's rating (Everyone/Teen/Mature) and a list of any of the content warnings that you would include in this story. Again, these tags are to help us best match artists with your story, so please be thorough here.
- Example: Bianca and Hilda have always been close through thick and thin, but after Bianca brings an unruly Scolipede to work the register at their cozy coffee shop, their quiet lives are full of more chaos than they'd ever intended. [Shipping Fic, Lighthearted Slice of Life] [Everyone for: Cartoon violence, no other applicable]
- Example: At the base of Mt. Pyre, a young vulpix makes a devastating choice: undertake the voortya, a sacred sacrifice of one of her siblings that will allow her ascension to ninetales, or refuse and face certain exile. That is, if the ghosts don't stop her first. [Action/Drama, Introspective] [Mature for: grief, depictions of death, mental illness, blood]
Entering for Artists (feel free to read now, but you're on deck and nothing is required of you currently)
- Starting around the second week of August (I'll make a reminder post), check your schedule and see if you're still good to do a bang piece in September. If you are, please Private Message me (@kintsugi) the following information:
- Things you would prefer to draw (this is fairly vague and may include: types of characters you like, genres of story you'd prefer to illustrate, specific Pokemon, etc)
- Things you don't want to be paired with (this includes both things you don't feel comfortable drawing, such as shipping art or complicated mechas; as well as things you don't feel comfortable reading, such as depictions of self harm or substance abuse).
- If you are available to pinch-hit (i.e. late in the art period, if it turns out another artist is unable to finish their piece, you could step in and fill for them)
- If you would like to make multiple illustrations for this event (in case their end up being more stories than artists)
- The entry period for artists will also close on Sunday, August 30 at 11:59 PM EST. Use this countdown to double check your work.
- If you are unable to start a PM due to having a new account, please post in this thread that you'd like to sign up, and I'll start the PM for you (you'll be able to sign up as normal after that).
- that's it!
Bang! (the far future~~)
- We'll make pairings based on author blurbs and artist entries, ideally before September 3.
- After that, we'll move all of the stories to the Library, and set up private conversations between the paired artists/authors, and the fun really begins!
- Artists will have until October 11 to discuss with their paired author and make their art piece! You may use your private conversation space as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
- Writers, in the meantime, we'll be doing a Roundtable with our stories for the event (basically, an open invitation to read each other's work and talk about it!). I'll post more information closer to the time.
- a cool badge??
FAQ
Q: Can I enter as both an artist and an author?
A: Yes! Of course, you will not be assigned as an artist to your own story, but otherwise there are no restrictions!
Q: What if I can't make the deadline (as an author)?
A: If you are unable to make a draft by the deadline (defined her as "something containing all of the story beats you had intended, written out in prose"), that's okay! Your signup is non-binding. We do ask that authors submit mostly-complete stories by the end of their writing period for the sake of our artists.
Q: What if I can't make the deadline (as an artist)?
A: Life gets crazy sometimes, and we get it! Please let me know as soon as possible and I'll work on finding a replacement.
Other questions? Please ask!! This is my first time making an FAQ for this event ;-;
