When the trade-in was announced, a date was given for when it would start. If it was fixed in the Japanese version that quickly then I'm sure the translation will be fine. If there is still a problem, though, they would get more people to notice it by having it on the screen as the game starts up.
Were the previous starters ever debuted in the anime before the release of the game? (Johto Pokémon appeared in the first movie but the starters didn't appear until the start of the Johto saga; Blaziken was at the Silver Conference but the actual starters didn't appear until Advance Generation.)
October 1999 was only a month before the release of Gold and Silver in Japan. I'm not surprised that we weren't told about them with the first D/P info.

No Team Rocket epiodes? What about Manene, orienteering, Jessie in contests, (especially the last one), etc?
I thought an Aipom steals the Ribbon Case. If that is true, though, then there's Jessie stealing ribbons to compete. (The writers would never let her keep them so it may as well be from May.)
They could drop May (as well as Max and Brock for that matter) for the Ranger arc and still have her come back for DP. The anti-May vibes were a little too high at times.
