Me, LightningTopaz, and Aladar have been in talks about starting a BMGF fanfiction awards contest (most likely annual). However, this is all uncharted territory, so we're willing to hear what the community has to say. This includes public opinion of the idea, and also suggestions on how the whole thing could work.

I had the idea that users could nominate fics for certain categories (i.e. Shipping fic, journey fic, etc). The five top-nominated fics would be the finalists. A poll would be set up, and the fics that get the most votes in their category win an award for the category. But that's just my idea.

On behalf of the Writer's Workshop moderators, I look forward to seeing your ideas!

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

DO WANT!

Divvy it up into certain categories and have people submit their favorite story that they've already written and posted by a certain deadline (i.e. no new stuff). Then, have a poll and vote!

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

Interesting. I haven't participated in one of these since 2006 (I won!)

I'd like to see the event pop up here. Making it annual is a little iffy though. There's a lot of works that pop up here constantly and I think people should get more chances to win. Maybe make it quarterly?

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

I think it's an excellent idea as long as their are awards for URPG stories included.

If you mean that users should nominate their own stories, then no. That wouldn't be fair, IMO.

What's URPG? [/n00b]

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

No offense here, but I think RPGs should be RPGs, fics should be fics. But it's up to the majority to decide, of course.

I agree with separating them in categories. One-shots, chaptered fics, dark fics, journey fics, shipping fics etc. But IMO we should follow Serebii's example (don't kill me, just listen)- have categories like funniest character and best take on canon character and best original character and so on.

This.... RPGs and fanfictions shouldn't be categorized in the same thing, as RPs are things that require more than one person to be writing something to be developing their 'story'.

Let's decide on the categories, then. For the stories themselves:

*Best Journey Fic

*Best Shipping Fic

*Best One-Shot

*Best Non-Pokemon Fic

*Best URPG Story

*Best Other Fic (for fics that don't really fit into any of those categories).

URPG is by no means the conventional RPG either. If look at it, its got like four distinct branches. Stories (i.e. fanfics), RPG (what you're confusing the whole project with), Battling (the majority of the "RPG") and Contests (the long neglected minority...). No RPing occurs in Stories. They are simply fanfics written for the express purpose of capturing a Pokemon within URPG. Fanfics in URPG =/= RPing in fanfics.

Thanks for clearing that up. It seems distinct enough to warrant a category.

No prob. I'm sure LT would have handled it eventually as he's a member as well.

And I have an idea. I know this is a "fanfic" contest, but maybe you could extend it towards other writing styles as well? Perhaps poetry? <3

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

I really really like this idea. I also like the categories suggested.

I agree with Ryuutakeshi saying that it should perhaps be quarterly, some fanfics are too short to be remembered by the end of the awarding year.

I like Aladar's suggestion of 'best character' etc. but I don't know if that'll work in practice.

My suggestion would be to just go with categories for fanfics for the first set of awards and then (one quarter later) either just do characters or include characters as well.

The idea of nominations and a poll also works well. I think this will work much better than a competition.

I think you should try and have the first set of awards as soon as possible for the sake of fics that have already finished (eg. Gary Ketchum's Kanto Journey and New Generations New Beginnings)

Um, I think that's my entire two cents. Hope this goes well and congratulations to Aladar and Jabberwock on their modshipifications.

Pokemon GK is an... interesting case. I see it as one fic, broken into volumes so that a thread doesn't get to like a billion pages. I'd probably say that if you're nominating GK, then *just* put it as Pokemon GK, no specific volume.

Thanks for your congratulations.

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

Love the idea. I had talked to Aladar about this same thing a few weeks ago.

Here are my ideas:

1. No RPGs - Aside from the rare occurance that two or more people write a fic together, a fanfic is done by one author who creates the whole story. An RPG is more of a collaborative effort, and any one person does not get to come up with everything. I say fics only.

2. Catagories - I say we have a bunch of catagories. To me, the point of the contest is not just to win an award, but also to get more people to read more of the stories on the Writer's Workshop. If we have more nominations, more people will read the stories.

I like these:

-Best Journey Fic
-Best One Shot
-Best Novel (We can decide what kind of wordcount this would be)
-Best Shipping Fic
etc.

Also, I think we should have more specific awards (like the Oscars do):

-Best Main Character
-Best Supporting Character
-Best Original Character
-Best Villian
-Most well-written, etc.
-Best Plot
etc.

Then the big award:

-Best Fic (Overall)

3. Completed Fics vs. In-Progress Fics?

Do we only have completed fics be eligible? Or could we have a separate catagory for in-progress fics? I guess if we did an annual awards thing, it would only include completed ones...but the only reason I ask (it's a selfish reason) is that I probably won't be done with my uber-long fic for a while.

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

I say that all fics, be it completed or in progress, should be able to be nominated. It seems to work on Serebiii and there's not enough finished fics to be nominated either way.

Re: Bulbagarden Fanfiction Awards 1.0: Suggestions?

So far! The categories that seem to be best suited!

Best One-shot (URPG Stories can be merged with this)

Best Journey Fic

Most Original

Best Shipping Fic

Best Other Fic

Best Original Character

Best Villain

Best Plot

Most Well-Written

Best Main Character

Best supporting character

The winners of the fic categories could be entered into a final election to compete for the title of Best Fic. the character category winners would compete to be named Best Character.

How does that sound?
