I lately noticed something which bugged me as a hell.

I see lots of custom pictures, fanarts and fansprites uploaded to Bulbapedia Archives. Isn't it against the rules? The Bulbapedia is supposed to be a home of OFFICIAL stuff not fanwork, which, in addition looks very ugly (just look at all these edited sprites, they look motherfuckass ugly).

It's very annoying that Bulbapedia members upload the fanwork to the Archives. It contradicts our policies.

I had to report that.

Well, let me just say that one can only upload a maxum-um of two pictures. So...I agree. Maybe decrease the limit to just one picture, or just direct them to a free picture hosting site.

Two pictures? I uploaded some Clefairy sprites (not custom), and I believe there was more than two that I had uploaded.

Bulbagarden Archives should only be hosting images that are used on Bulbapedia or Bulbanews. That's where the policy lies. So if there is a case where a fanwork is being used, then the question of whether it should stay goes to the relevant article. If it isn't being used then it shouldn't be there to begin with.

As for custom sprites, as long as they are doing no harm I find them to be a neat little addition. The ones based on DP sprites are certainly not ugly.

If it were up to me I would solve this problem by restricting Archive upload permissions to sysops/admins only, but god knows that would raise a stink.

speaking of pictures on the archives...how are we getting Platinum sprites when it hasn't even been released anywhere yet?

Probably custom made using released screenshots. My question is, how are people going to assume that the new Giratina sprites are the actual static sprites and replace them completely. Like the Origin Forme.

Ugh, the mess over these new Giratina sprites just proves that we should have just left the tables alone until the release. Now there's something worth getting worked up about.

That would solve a lot of problems but make things a lot more awquard in the process.

^ Which is true. I am not an admin, and I intend to upload some of the missing sprites so the tables can be more complete.

I'm thinking that maybe I should've waited too, Vinny. Plus, it's been customary to make the V3 sprites the gifs and show them animating...
Which brings up the issue of the animated backsprites that are coming up...

Yeah, it would. I've uploaded (guess) about 30 pictures, all being used in articles.

We could:
* Set up an additional usergroup with uploading privilleges, or,
* Disable new account registration (which is a bit ironic considering that we got unified login working just recently) and block abusers who have already registered, or,
* Grant sysop powers to good users and restrict uploading to sysops.

I don't think handing out sysop powers JUST because of the archives is the way to go.

A user group could solve the problem.

If we are going to restrict uploading though, we may as well give those same users the power to delete and therefore assist in the management of the tens of thousands of files in Archives...

Well, we could also solve the problem retroactively by having someone/people dedicated to checking every image to make sure it's going somewhere relevant, then deleting the bad ones no questions asked. If people keep getting their images deleted they'll probably get the hint and stop uploading eventually.

I think the group thing is the way to go. If at all possible, I would like to be a member.
