Does anyone know why Bulbapedia won't let anyone register for an account?

We're not prepared to give an exact date, simply because of the risk of the vandal reading the forums and waiting until then. We may start doing manual creation of accounts by the moderators, if necessary, or funnel them through a system so they need manual approval by moderators before they can edit.

But accounts get created every 30 minutes, and I'm pretty sure when the vandal tries to spam, your emails will be flooded.

Not only that, but Grawp's been spotted over on the German side and blocked, and has been vandalizing on the Polish side yet the sysops have done nothing.

Besides, it's not editing that was the problem with the vandal. So that kind of system wouldn't help us.

If such a system could prevent the account from being created in the first place before it was approved, we would fix the issues of bad usernames. And if it allows for checkuser abilities before the account is created, we can even catch sockpuppets before they're created. So I think a system of that nature would be something to aim for.

The question is, how easily can it be done within the MediaWiki framework...

I was thinking of a thread that could be set up in the BP section where users could request Bulbapedia sysops to create accounts for them and PM them the passwords. They then have to make an edit to something to make sure it passes checkuser, and from there they can change their password if they don't feel comfortable with a sysop knowing it. They'd just make a post making a request like this-

Username:
Sysop of choice (if applicable):

If they are new or don't have a preferance then an administrator can respond asking the user to PM him/her their password of choice and e-mail address and the account can be made. This way we don't have to deal with e-mail spam as most of it will be right here in public.

Not for the long term of course, but for now it could work.

Thoughts?

Might be better to have a link to PM an admin, so the user doesn't have to go through much work. Let's say...
Subject: User creation request
Username: xxxxxxx
Password: yyyyyyy

Certainly not a long-term fix, but if someone really doesn't want to wait for us to turn account creation back on, that is an option. Do we have the ability to create new accounts ourselves though, however? It can be done with server access, but with creation disabled, I don't know that anyone can make them from the outside, no matter what their rank or abilities are.

Administrators, Archaic. On 'Pedia, they're called Administrators. :D

Much more easily than you think. ;)
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmAccount

And it can show the IP of the requesting user.

It should be able to hold up. After all, the current one's running only BP, while the rest of the site is on the old server. All we gotta do is make sure it doesn't conflict with other extensions...
