Kukui and Burnet have a proposal.

Yeah I still remember pokeymans

Do you want Guzma to be happy? Do you like bi4bi4bi? Then have I got the fic for you.

References to past child abuse.

Anything.

“Ya want me to… what?”

Kukui and Burnet nodded, starting at the same time, though not in perfect sync. Guzma couldn’t believe what they were saying. No way in hell. They were the definition of a monogamous, heterosexual (well, bi for bi heterosexual, from what they had said) married couple. And now…

“It’s totally cool if you don’t want to do it,” Kukui said. “This is something Nelly and I have been discussing for a while now, even before we got married!”

“We debated having a more traditional Alolan marriage, but… well, I’m not sure we could find just two other people we love! And we wanted to keep things a little more… open, you might say?”

“And what do you see in a washed-up troublemaker like me?” Asking that made Guzma feel a bit… down, so he perked himself up with, “Besides my good looks.”

Burnet giggled. “Well that, for one. You’re very funny.”

Guzma nodded, looking to the side. “Yeah, that’s true.” Really, the reason why he didn’t believe what these two were saying was…

“I don’t know, man. Like, we were really good friends when we were training under Hala, but… I’ve been such a dick to you.”

“Yeah, you could say that,” Kukui said with a smirk.

Guzma’s instincts wanted him to retort back, but his reasoning knew he was the one to walk into that.

“I think you’ve shown a lot of character since the Aether fiasco,” Kukui continued. “You’ve been more introspective, more able to look within yourself and see your flaws. And all the stuff you’re doing to help your former lackeys—”

“Numbskulls,” Guzma corrected, with not a trace of anger. “They’re my stupid numbskulls, and I would take a Bullet Punch for them.”

“That’s my thing!” Kukui laughed.

“You’re a terrible influence,” Guzma teased back.

Kukui looked over at his wife. “Oh, it’s just like old times.”

“You two must have been a lot of fun as kids,” Burnet said.

“We were”—Guzma looked back to Kukui—“but what does any of that have to do with… with you guys.”

“I said this was something we were discussing for a while,” Kukui began again. “That includes asking you in specific if you would want to be with us.” He sighed. “Without being too blunt, if you were the same as you were last year, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. We’ve all got flaws, but what matters is what we do with them. There’s healthy ways to deal with them, and there’s no-so-healthy ways. But the good news is that you can learn how to deal with them in a healthy way. And you’re proof of it.”

Guzma wanted to make a joke, but… damn it, that hit closer to home than he would have liked. He was so used to people telling him, directly or otherwise, that he was a lost cause, that there was no hope for him improving. No one had given him a chance…

It was Kukui and Burnet who first reached out to him after everything with Lusamine and the Ultra Beasts, asking if he was okay. It was that kindness, plus everything leading up to those events, that made him realize that he was so close to falling off the deep end, that he needed to work on himself. He needed to address all of the shit clouding up his soul; it could only explain and excuse so much.

Hala had recommended a therapist, one who specialized in anger management and people from dysfunctional households. Having words to describe his experiences helped with understanding them, and that in turn helped him with confronting them. Hala and Guzma ended up talking a lot, so the latter could also help rehabilitate his numbskulls. All that silly therapy-speak he used to think was nonsense… he was starting to warm up to it. And for the first time in his life, Guzma felt real, true fulfillment.

“Guzma, are you okay?” Kukui asked softly.

Guzma wiped his eyes. “You two got me crying over sappy shit. If that ain’t a sign of change, I don’t know what is.”

Kukui and Burnet smiled again.

“I’m still gonna have a lot to learn if we’re gonna make this work. Like how to do a date.”

“We can help with that,” Burnet said. “When are you free to start?”
