With BW season 1 almost over let’s take a look back and some of the battle styles presented during the Unova series.

First off I would like to not even dwell on Ash’s lack of sense in combat. I mean lately he’s been doing better and we see more DP Ash but still he has a long way to go or at least stick to the style of battle he’s been using all along. I think his worst battle sense was during the 4th gym battle where he was way too cocky and freaking out like a “little kid.”

Cilan has an interesting battle style where he “tests” a Pokemon’s ability and connection with its trainer, but after he evaluates them he goes in for the finisher. I’d say his downfall is that he talks too much and gives his opponents useful tips that some actually take into consideration during battle to take him down.

I’d say Pansage is his best example in this case; he likes long range attacks and starts off most battles with Bullet Seed to test his opponent’s reflexes. That’s my observation on his style; Solarbeam is more of a trusted finishing move. Dig is used for surprise attacks and defensive tactics, while Bite is rarely used but a nice close range attack.

Bianca has an all or nothing style of battle where her opponents better be able to take some hits or else they will fall in an instant. Like Barry, she’ll freak out when she fails an attack or she overestimates her Pokemon’s endurance like Emboar. I mean constant attacks from a Pokemon that isn’t fast like that almost led to her downfall.

These are just a couple of trainers with battle styles I found worthy of note. What other BW characters do you think have interesting battle tactics?

Katherine.

Her Gothita telling her what to do is the most unique thing in the series: A Pokémon commanding a human commanding Pokémon.

So far Cabernet has impressed me the most in terms of creative strategies, it's just too bad that hasn't translated into results. Dento has a pretty interesting battle style too, though his over-reliance on the Crustle+Shell Smash crutch drags him down in that respect.

The less said about Iris and Ash, the better :\

Satoshi's battle style is 'send out the wrong type of Pokemon and hope for the best', Iris is nothing remarkable, Dent's 'tasting time' got real old real fast, Shooty's style is also run-of-the-mill and Bel just seems to flail around (apart from in the Donamite)... so basically, where is the 'None' option.

None of the styles are that remarkable.

Ash is unorthodox (much less so in BW)
Iris is attack, attack, attack, etc.
Cilan's is only interesting when he's not using Crustle.
Stephan is Bulk up + attack, attack, attack
Bianca's gotten better
Trip just fails
Georgia is nothing special.

Good answers!

I’d have to agree with the Ash statements his whole send out a Pokémon and hope for the best is played out…I mean if he did it with his veteran Pokémon part of me would still be ticked off but not so much because he has longer experience with those Pokémon and thought up tactics on how to counter their disadvantages. His Gen V team isn’t all that great (yet)…

I hate the whole Attract means the opponent is unable to fight (what happened to the chance attack every once and awhile while still under Attract?). This goes to Iris, Ash and Bianca’s Pokemon who are able to use it.

Cilan has his moments sometimes; I mean I have a Crustle in the games with the same move set. It holds either Rocky Helmet or White Herb and it works great especially with Sturdy as its ability. If anything I think that it is his best Pokemon, I wish Pansage would evolve sooner or later I mean I’m a fan of the little “green Aipom” but it’s not that durable in battle to take a lot of damage.

His match with Skyla using Crustle was good but not using Rock Slide was his downfall along with using X-Scissor against Swanna? Sure Shell Smash really raised its Attack power because he used it TWICE but still using Rock Slide would be harder to dodge instead of the one rock coming from Rock Wrecker. His Stunfisk should at least know Shock Wave or something more powerful than a simple Thundershock you know? Not to mention letting it win at least once…

Yes, Iris is pretty much attack over and over again the only strategy was her telling Emolga to use Attract until Sawk was “so paralyzed that it can’t move!” Wish it knew a Flying move for STAB sake…her Axew learning Outrage and only using it once (what’s the point?)

Her Excadrill is the only Pokemon that I actually like. Miss Dragon Buster, well I need to see more of her Pokemon before I make a judgment but she has shown “some” strategy like Metal Sound/Iron Head combo or using Leaf Blade from Snivy to break the rock trapped on its head in the Club Battle.

Stephan is interesting, but I don’t like when a Pokemon is given only STAB moves with no variety in its move set. Don’t get me wrong I think his Sawk is great, but only Fighting moves is kind of a letdown you know? Maybe in its next appearance it may know a Rock or Ground move.

Trip…well I give him props in his battle with Ash in episode 10. That showed for a beginner he was at the top of the list for strategy. Think of it like this; if not for Pikachu I don’t think Ash would have knocked out a single one of his Pokemon. Tranquill used Work Up twice to boost its power plus it had Super Luck. It knocked out the little Fire Pig and Water Otter in one shot, Pidove would not have stood a chance and Snivy is a Grass type.

The only way I could have seen a win was if Attract had hit Tranquill (assuming that it’s male because Ash has a female; sort of like how Paul has a Froslass while Ash has Glalie; though male/female Snorunt could be Glalie pre-Gen 4).

He really went downhill for me considering his Timbur’s poor onscreen battle record…

At first I was mad he lost to Emboar. It didn’t take any damage beforehand plus it used Bulk Up for more power/defense. Though I thought about it how many Pokemon could be able to battle after having concrete pillars thrown square at its chest and face?

If Trip wants to win the league he has a lot of work to do…

My only problem with Kenyan is he using his Dageki all the time.
Where is the poor Zebraika? And does he have only two Pokémon?

Yeah, I know in that last tournament they could only use 1 Pokemon but in the first Battle Club tournament they could use up to 3 meaning that he does have at least 3 Pokemon. But yeah I know what you mean....

Yeah, he does have at least one more. But he never even shows the thing. XD
Who knows, maybe in this new tournament we manage to see more of his team.

I mean the same goes with Georgia only showing Beartic and Bisharp but I can't wait to see what he will bring out next. I mean he's won all of those Pokemon status boosters like Protein and Carbos. There is no telling how well trained his team is!
