Can All Pokemon See Colours?

I was just watching EP042, and Ash's Pokedex says the following:

"Scyther and Electabuzz are both rare Pokemon. They are able to distinguish colours, and become enraged by the colour red."

This was the dub. I wonder what it says in the original?

It makes it seems that BECAUSE they are rare, they are able to see colours.

I don't know about that, but I do know that some Pokemon don't see in colors; for example, Spearow.

As mentioned above, it's mentioned Spearow cannot see in colour, so it's very possible other Pokémon are colour-blind.

I don't trust the pokedex in any media anymore.

If some pokemon are colour blind, are same pokemon able to see in the ultraviolet and/or infrared range of the spectrum? I would guess that some bug types like the ones based off of bees and butterflies would have impared vision in the human visible range, but could make out ultraviolet frequencies.

I would assume that some but not all Pokemon are colorblind.

I would not be surprised if bird (Spearow excepted) and bug type Pokemon can see into the ultraviolet range nor if snake types could see into the infrared.

Of course, seeing in polarized light is possible.

And Luxray are alleged to be able to see through walls... So they may be able to see X-Rays or Gamma rays. Obviously, peering through walls with that is impossible unless they emitted radiation. Then their vision would work like a backscatter X-Ray machine. Of course, that could be a "6th sense".

It depends generally on if whether the creature's vision is motion orientated or detail orientated. Motion and night orientated vision is usually color blind or missing in colors. Detail orientated is usually color orientated. However, this isn't always the case. Insects usually see in color, and their vision isn't detail orientated. There are always exceptions.

It really does depend on the lifestyle of the creature in question. Certain types of vision, such as colour or night vision are advantagious in certain situations, and not in others.

Pokemon are mostly based off animals.

I'd say if the animal can't see in colour, then the pokemon can't either unless otherwise stated.

I'd also imagine humanoid like pokemon would be more likely to see in full colour.

What about Pokémon that are not based on animals? Ghost types for instance, or Magnamite?

merkrow can see shiny things so if they can see in color either that how do they know if somethings actually shiny.

I think ... you're saying that since Murkrow can see shiny things they must be able to see colour? I think ...
That's not necessarily true though. Shine is simple how well an object reflects light. You can see shiny things in black and white vision. Seeing as Murkrow is a bird however, a nocturnal one at that, it most likely has a very well developed sense of sight and most likely can see colours very well.

I think the Zubat family can't "see" but instead they navigate by using supersonic waves. So yeah, not each one can see colo(u)rs.

Why mention it then?

As trivia, since its pretty bare to just say they are rare Pokemon.

And of course, it was the set up to the whole episode it was mentioned in. The first thing they said about it being rare was a fact in the game, the second thing about the colour red was a set up for the entire episode.

A lot of old dex entries are like that, putting two random facts together. Most of the anime entries start with "[Name] a [species] Pokemon. [random fact that may be the premise to the episode]"

So basically it was Scyther and Electabuzz, then stating they were rare, and then random trivia about the two that link both of them together.

And I don't understand why we're so interested whether or not some Pokemon cans ee colour when things liek Luxray can apparently see electromagneic waves, and Lucario can see the flow of life energy.

Colour blind also doesn't mean only seeing black and white, it just means that they don't recognize certain colours.

That would be partial color-blindness, like how cats can see green and blue, but not red.
