announced for Wii!

C3 News said:
Nintendo of Japan has finally confirmed that the Squaresoft co-developed Super Mario RPG from the SNES will be hitting the Virtual Console during June. Clearly an agreement has been made with Square Enix and the much sought after game will be launching in Japan next month for a slightly higher 900 Wii Points. It is only a matter of time before the US get this now and chances are much higher for a European and Australian release this time round as well.

Check out the full list below, which also includes Phantasy Star IV on Mega Drive:

Famicom

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa

Transformers: Convoy no Nazo

Nekketsu Koukou Dodge Ball Bu (Super Dodge Ball)

Yoshi's Cookie

Super Famicom

Super Mario RPG

Master System

Ashura (Secret Command in Europe, Rambo: First Blood Part II in the US)

Mega Drive

Phantasy Star IV

TurboGrafx-16

Power Tennis

Lords of Thunde

Paranoia (Psychosis)

Gunhed (Blazing Lazers)

NeoGeo

King of the Monsters

Ninja Commando

Art of Fighting 2

With Square Enix's support of the Virtual Console slowly increasing, perhaps the chances of seeing classics such as Rudra's Treasure, Bahamut Lagoon and Live-A-Live from the SNES are not lost, as well as the likes of Mischief Makers and Wonder Project J on the N64. As for Chrono Trigger, well, keep yours hopes up for that rumoured announcement of a re-imagining later in the year...

(I'm not sure why the link goes to that page either, but that's the link the article gave)

It's great that it's finally being released on the VC. It seems like they've been trying to get around all the legal red tape for ages now.

I spent an obscene number of hours playing and replaying and replaying this game in my youth, so I'll probably just download it on my Japanese Wii and try it in that language.

That is awesome. Although how can there be legal red tape when many games from other companies have been released on the VC? What would the Square/Nintendo partnership on this particular one have to do with it?

Square and Nintendo had a messy falling out in the Playstation era. Square and Nintendo were best buddies but Square left Nintendo because they didn't like cartridges and Nintendo felt betrayed.

Their relationship isn't so bad anymore (Nintendo was able to convince Square to put the FF III remake on the DS instead of the PSP, after all), so I don't think that's it. I'll bet you anything Square-Enix wanted to keep the game off the VC so they can possibly do a DS remake at some point (which is also the reason you probably won't be seeing any Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games on the VC) and that the last two years or so were spent convincing them not to.

Wait...isn't FFVI on the VC? I know people were talking about downloading it some time ago.

Besides, they could bill the VC version as "classic" and the potential remake as "enhanced" and sell both.

Considering Squeenix has spent more time in recent years cranking out remakes and re-releases than releasing actually new games, it's not exactly surprising that they'd want to keep their back catalogue to themselves so they can make £30 a pop on a rerelease/remake instead of the relative pittance they'd get for licensing a release on the VC.

Actually, it looks like they're trying to jump-start a bunch of new franchises right now: World Ends With You, Infinite Undiscovery, and Last Remnant. Their president even said just relying on FF, DQ, and KH wasn't going to cut it anymore.

I wonder if this timing has anything to do with Nintendo working on FFCC: Life as King.

I still don´t get what was so special about this game besides being the first mario rpg. I prefer the paper mario games by FAR.

I lost interest in the game couldn´t even finish it...for my taste it felt very un-mario-ish.

Maybe my expectations were too high when I imported the game when it was released so many years ago, but I still don´t get the geno/mallow/mario rpg fanboys.

well, at least there is the possibility of more Square-Enix releases on the VC? Terranigma would be sooo sweet...

I think it's the Square half of the company that's being picky about VC releases. After all, Act Raiser made it on there, and that was originally an Enix game (so Terranigma may have a chance).

it's a shame that they're probably not gonna do that. Can you imagine how many people would flock to (legal) releases of 8-bit Final Fantasy games just because of a certain web comic? XD

Just downloaded the game on my Japanese Wii. And the flood of memories has started.

What's funny to me is how Croco, in the Japanese version, uses a lot of English. And I keep picturing Franky's (One Piece) voice coming out of him for some reason.

I'm at the part just after you beat Croco where the Mushroom Castle's been taken over.

Haha, I didn't know that about him. Care to share some sample lines?
Any other pecularities? You have to tell us if Link's still there.

I've been out of town all weekend, so I haven't had a chance to play much more.

Examples of English in Croco's dialogue? Well...he says YOU-tachi (instead of anata-tachi) and ME (instead of watashi) a lot. He also, after you beat him, randomly says ADIOSU.

Well...yeah :p But that's only one time, though. The rest of the time, he speaks a mix of Japanese and Engrish.

Sorry for the double post...but the game came out on the PAL Virtual Consoles today. Which means that, for the first time ever, people in the U.K. and Australia can legally play the game in English.

Finally, I get to play the game that I've heard so much about...!
