In episode 140 (Wired For Battle), Scizor is shown flying, but one of its Mystery Dungeon phrases is "I can't fly, but I have power to spare". So am I misinterpreting something, or is it one of those cases where the anime and the games are different canon? Thanks.

(Sorry if I did something wrong, it's my first post)

I've raised this question about Scyther, didn't really think about Scizor. I think it can't, as the steel coat made it too heavy

I'd say it can hover for short periods of time, but can't really fly, like say, a Pidgeot could. Anime is usually a different canon, too.

That particular episode created a faulty image of Scizor, because it is unable of flight. It can still flap its wings though (which explains it being able to use Defog), but it uses them to regulate its body temperature.

That makes sense because it was only flying for a short amount of time in that episode. So it probably used its powerful legs to jump into the air and then start hovering momentarily using its wings.

I remember it jumping really high into the air, as well as moving really fast, but I don't recall it ever genuinely flying. I'd have to watch the episode to be sure, but I think you're just misremembering the episode.

I just watched it last night, skip to the battle between Shingo and Ash.

Don't think weight is the issue. Dragonite can fly despite having smaller wings to body size ratio than Scizor and being over 200 pounds heavier.

In Smash Bros. Melee, Scizor is featured flying around the screen at high speeds. So I say yes to him flying.
Scizor's trophy description from said game even states "it's unable to fly very far with its wings," meaning that it can indeed fly with them according to Smash Bros.

Ooooh. This is a good question.
Well, we know that Scyther can fly. It doesn't fly very often but we do know that Scyther can absolutely fly and zip around super fast.
But Scizor flying? Well, we do know it is capable of hovering at least. And in many of Scizor's appearances in games and anime seem to suggest that it can fly. However, the Pokedex is constantly saying that it cannot fly. It's been saying this since Gen 2 in fact.

So in the end, I believe Scizor is very much capable of flight, but it's not nearly as fast as Scyther. I also think it can't fly as well as say a Pidgeot or Staraptor could, so don't expect it to soar you across a region. However, I believe that with proper training, a Scizor could be capable of improving its flight capabilities. Depending on the size of the Scizor, it might be able to carry someone on its back.

One thing's for sure, Kleavor's stuck to the ground.

In my opinion, based on how HEAVY Scizor is compared to Scyther, I would expect it to at least be able to fly relatively short distances before getting tired. (really, REALLY tired, like, how does this thing even handle the weight of its pincers)

Unrelated, but, HOW DID GAME FREAK FORGET THAT SCYTHER IS ABLE TO FLY AND NOT GIVE IT THE HM FOR IT?

Hold up. This reminds me of a little something I wrote that's actually a super deep cut reference to another thing. I think it fits this conversation.

This is the story of the Scizor.

Its wings are too small and its body too big and heavy.

According to all principles, it’s too large and heavy for its wings. It just can’t fly.

But no one has told this to the Scizor…

So it flies and flies.

He doesn’t care much about principles. Do you?

Pokemon Shield's Pokedex explains that even Scizor's muscles are made of metal.
I know, but, even then, the weight of its pincers (around 39.33333... kg // around 78.66666... kg if we count both of them) would eventually get too much to bear (ik that's partially part of Mega Scizor's entry in one of the SM games but my point still stands)

For context on the numbers its Sword entry says its pincers are worth 1/3 of its body weight, so taking that into account each is 39.33333... kg (or idk that's what I understood, correct me if I'm wrong on this)
