Hopefully I'm not the first one who's thought of this. I got tired of waiting for VIZ to release anymore Pokemon Box Sets, so I thought I would buy the Region 4 (Australia) Box Sets of Johto Journeys and Johto League Champions on ebay. Now I'm wondering if someone can point me to a wonderful Region 4 or Region free DVD Player that will play these DVDs perfectly and without any issues. I read on Amazon that people have had a lot of problems buying crummy ones that don't play well at all, and I want to make sure that doesn't happen to me.

Re: Pokemon Season 3 & 4 Box Sets (Region 4)

I'm moving this to the Geeks Corner since it has more to do with DVD players than the Pokemon TV show.

Many normal DVD players can be switched to a "Region 0" mode by inputting a special code on a certain screen of the menu. Both of my DVD players (one is a generic "Magnasonic" brand, and the other is a Philips) had such codes. You can usually find them by Googling it, as long as you know the exact model number of you DVD player.

However, of bigger concern might be the PAL vs. NTSC issue on those DVDs. I assume you're in the US? In addition to needing the region free DVD player, you'll need to make sure your television can playback PAL video (which is what Australian DVDs use).

Well they're definitely PAL, and I have a Samsung DVD Player, but when I called Samsung, they sad there DVD Players can't change regions. Also, you're saying that the TV might be a problem? Could you please explain that to me?

Different parts of the world use different video standards... especially in the pre-HD era. Video on Australian DVDs is encoded using the PAL standard, but North America generally uses NTSC. Some televisions can play both NTSC and PAL, but it's not a guaranteed feature. You should look at the documentation for your TV to see if it's capable of displaying PAL video.

Maybe this is why people complained that the video had trouble loading or crashed and stuff. Is that what will happen if you have a Region free Pal playing dvd player?

For me when it comes to finding a DVD player that play multiregion I find researching the player (portable or one that connects to a TV) is vital in finding a region free player or a player that has codes to unlock it. This way you can find out what brands are good and what to stay away from.

Googling helps alot.

If you have a TV that isn't compatible as in can't play PAL ect. There's always portable DVD players which come with their own screen. I'm not sure what American portable players are like but the ones I owned (Which are Australian ones since I live in Australia when it comes to playing NTSC and PAL) have done quite a good job. Of course if region locked they also need a code to unlock.

However I wouldn't know what to recommend since I don't know what DVD players are available instore where you are. So sorry if I'm not much help. However there are plenty of places to find out online with enough patience.

If you have a PC with a DVD drive, you can download VLC. It can play DVDs of any region. It also lets you play PAL discs, so you don't need to worry about having a PAL tv.
