Can you say, predictable?

I can see Iran doing this just to piss us off, but I don't know why Turkey is letting their Kurd-hating get in the way of our relations, especially since Turkey is (or was) one of the last non-crazy Muslim nations out there. We better bring them back in line before they become too hostile to Iraq.

What, you mean it's not a proportionate answer to constant action by PKK members out in Turkey and Iran?

The Kurds are the only group in Iraq that has a general approval of the U.S. We should try and rein in the militant groups, but in the end we need Kurdish support to keep at least a toehold in Iraq.

Really, they can fight the Kurdish rebels all they want in their own territory, but if they start attacking in soverign Iraqi territory, then America needs to intervene.

I've never understood this. Why does the US continue to not push for an independent Kurdish state? And why does the UN do nothing, even lamely?

America doing that would be double standards at work, of course.

(Though I agree that you guys DO need the Kurds if you want a glimmer of a forlorn hope in Iraq)

My dad was right. Iran and Turkey want to control Kurdistan for the oil. That's right people, it all goes bak to black gold. If Turkey controls it they can tell the EU to fuck off because they'd be an oil supplier. Iran wants it for similar reasons.

I don't know why Bush didn't the Kurds their own nation. I've heard it was because Turkey said they wouldn't help if an idependant Kurdistan was formed. A lot of good that did.

Yeah, but our words are backed by nuclear weapons. :-)

Seriously, it sucks that we've caught ourselves in a double standard, but it's in America's best interests to keep the Kurds on our sides.

Though that is why an independant Kurdistan will never be. Because Kurdish parts of Iran and Turkey would break off to be a part of it.
