Run across this on a few sites, and it's from a source that's been good at getting things right in the past...so let's run with it.

Source.

Chris Evans will play Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.

Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel's offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which reps the actor, declined comment.

Evans was offered the role in Marvel Studios' production last week, but there was some question of whether he would accept. Factoring in to the choice was the fact that Evans played Johnny Storm, the flame-covered superhero known as the Human Torch in Fox's "Fantastic Four" movies. Was he ready to play another superhero and take on the trappings that come with such a high-profile part?

Evans took a few days to think it over, and once he decided he was willing to wield the shield, negotiations moved quickly over the weekend.

He's been rumored to be in the running for a few weeks, and rumored to have been cast for a few days, but this as conclusive as things have gotten.

Frankly...I kinda like it. He was one of the few cast members of the Fantastic Four movies that I liked, and I'm actually interested to see him in action...assuming this is more than just a rumor, of course.

EDIT:

Source aka Jon Favreau (Iron Man director)'s Twitter page.

"Welcome to the new Captain. He continues the fine tradition of playing two Marvel characters!"

More or less confirms it.

I approve. Evans has the comedic side to fit Cap's one-liners, and also the right acting skills for the more serious moments... hopefully, anyway. He's also got the right build to believably pass for both skinny (although hardly a "90-something pound weakling") and muscular (he'll probably have to work a bit to get closer to Cap's hulking post-serum size, though).

But I'm crossing my fingers he actually goes blonde this time.

Re: Captain America Has Been Cast (Nigh-Confirmed Rumor)

Never did post this...

Most of the rumors and speculation surrounding the Joe Johnston directed "Captain America" film have circled who will play the title role. As many as eight different actors have been rumored as in the running with as much as screen tests involved. Now, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, there's a rumor about who will play his main foe.

As many suspected, The Red Skull will be the villain of the WWII-era film, and genre film heavyweight Hugo Weaving is reportedly in talks to play him. Weaving has been a mainstay of geek films with roles in "V for Vendetta," "The Matrix" trilogy, the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and more.

The Red Skull has likewise been a mainstay of Captain America comics, as a crazed nazi, a communist overlord, in a cloned body of Steve Rogers himself, and more. Always the ruthless despot, he is essentially the equal and opposite of Cap. Though multiple people have carried the name, the likely version used here will be Johann Schmidt.

Chris Evans as Cap I like. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull would just be awesome. ...As long as he's not Italian.

Re: Captain America Has Been Cast (Nigh-Confirmed Rumor)

Confirmed now. Plus...Bucky's been cast. Sebastian Stan...who I'm not familiar with. But...alright.

Mmm, I'm not crazy about the idea of Evans being Cap. Only because he's already Johnny. It's like casting Hugh Jackman or Ioan Gruffudd as Dr. Strange: making already established faces into other major characters in the "same universe".

While the idea of a live-action film between the Avengers and FF is highly unlikely, it's still....weird. Evans already has a good thing being the Torch; does he need to capitalize on Captain America, too? I'd imagine only under the threat of the FF hitting a reboot would they consider dual-casting one actor for two major roles in the same franchise.

Well, I approve. It'll be a great film indeed. Johnny was one of the best parts of F4.

I kind of agree. Plenty of actors to fill the roles so far. Though, apparently, almost every actor in Hollywood was considered (unless Marvel's E-I-C is a liar). And at least you're complaining about him being GOOD in a role, rather than bad. Though, keep in mind, Ryan Reynolds was in Blade 3 AND Wolverine in a supporting role. Both sword-wielders. Though there's certainly a bigger difference between Frank Drake and Deadpool and Human Torch and Captain America.

Actually, there IS a threat of an FF reboot (they did well, but not well enough). As is, that's likely the only way we'll see the FF again.
