Fidel Castro, former dictator of the Republic of Cuba, has stepped down from office, and given the job to his brother, Raúl. He has suffered from strokes recently, and is now, apparently, to sick to continue. He had been dictator since the late 1950's.

After things settle down. It would be a good time for the U.S. to extend the olive branch to Cuba. Raul Castro is not nearly as extremist as his brother. While I don't expect a warm reception at first, steps could be taken to improve the abysmal relations between the two countries. Help we won't get "Fuck Cuba" president in November.

Not quite.

Yeah, we may see a more open market in Cuba, which is great, but just as there are still terrible human rights violations in China, a country with somewhat free markets, there will still be the oppression of dissent in Cuba. To be honest, I've wondered if a policy towards Cuba similar to the one we've had to China would help open Cuba up, but then again China hasn't gotten that much more liberal in the last few decades.

This right here is why I've always wondered why our communism allergy is still in place. Even the worst people don't live forever. I'm not for outright supporting dictatorships, but the countries' leaders are all adults. You don't have to like them to do business with them ... we've tolerated a heckuva lot worse countries than an island nation we could easily send to the bottom of the ocean if we wanted to fight dirty enough. I've never seen what is the big deal.

The basis of anticommunism is Harry Truman's "Domino Doctrine", the absurd belief that the success of one communist revolution will spread elsewhere.

The basis of anti-Cuba policy? Republican presidents pandering to their Cuban constituencies in Florida, a key battleground state.

After we got out of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos went communist. In Africa, nations like Ethiopia, Mozambique, and Angola went Communist, with many smaller ones adopting hard-line socialist (i.e. Communist in all but name) policies. Likewise, Nicaragua and Grenada took hard turns to the left here. The USSR itself invaded Afghanistan to prop up a Communist regime. There may not have been a group of people in Moscow calling all the shots, but the success of Communist revolutions in one nation inspired guerrillas in other nations to step up. Domino policy may not have been a highly unified philosophy, but its effects were clearly evident.

Guess that him stepping down is a relief considering part of my family had to leave Cuba because of him. Eh, if marketing can possibly be done between the US and Cuba things will look rather bright for both sides. >_>

That's disgusting, referring to Fidel Castro as a dictator. If he was a dictator, the U.S wouldn't have left him in power.

Of course the U.S is scared of Communism, as it totally refutes the whole method of control the U.S government has (money).

I hope that's sarcasm or some sort of joke. Castro was hardly the worst man alive, but when you're forcing people to live by your rules, don't allow free elections, and lock up and/or execute dissidents...there aren't many other words you can use aside from "dictator." Well, there are, but they're really just synonyms.
