Catch Grookey in Pokémon GO with this month's Community Day event on Sunday January 18th

Grookey, the Chimp Pokémon, will be the featured Pokémon for Pokémon GO's January 2026 Community Day, which will be held Sunday, January 18th, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm local time. During this event, Grookey will be appearing more frequently in the wild, together with their Shiny variant.

Starting from this month, the featured Pokémon for Community Days can also have a yearly Special Background.

Event Bonuses and Activities
The following event bonuses will be active throughout the event:

• 3× Stardust for catching Pokémon.
• 2× Candy for catching Pokémon.
• 2× chance for Trainers level 31 and up to receive Candy XL from catching Pokémon.
• Incense (excluding Daily Adventure Incense) activated during the event will last for three hours.
• Trainers can receive an in-game surprise by taking a few snapshots during Community Day

The following additional event bonuses will be active from 2:00pm to 9:00pm local time:

• One additional Special Trade can be made for a maximum of three for the day
• Trades will require 50% less Stardust.
• Lure Modules will last for one hour.
• Grookey will have a very high chance of appearing at PokéStops with active regular Lure Modules.
  • Grookey attracted to regular Lure Modules will still have an increased chance to be Shiny, and may have a Special Background.

Featured Attacks
From the beginning of the event until 9:00pm local time, Thwackey that are evolved into Rillaboom will learn the Charged Attack Frenzy Plant.

Starting with the event and continuing afterwards, Rillaboom will be able to learn the Charged Attack Drum Beating. Drum Beating has 60 power and lowers the opposing Pokémon’s Attack by one stage in Trainer Battles, and 115 power in Gyms and raids.

Paid Special Research
A Grookey Community Day-exclusive Special Research will be available for purchase for US$1.99 (or the equivalent pricing tier in each local currency). Trainers who complete this research will earn additional encounters with Grookey (including three encounters with Grookey that have a Special Background), a Premium Battle Pass, and a Rare Candy XL. This Special Research can also be gifted to any friend with a Friendship level of Great Friends or higher.

Field Research
Free January Community Day-themed Field Research will be available. Amongst other rewards, Trainers completing this research will be able to earn additional encounters with Grookey, as well as Stardust, and Ultra Balls. Some Trainers may even find Field Research that leads to encounters with Grookey that have a Special Background.

Timed Research
Trainers may check in to a Community Ambassador event to get Timed Research. Trainers completing this research will be able to earn additional encounters with Grookey with a Special Background, as well as other premium item rewards.

Community Day Ultra Box
A Community Day Ultra Box will be available on the Pokémon GO Web Store for US$1.99 (or the equivalent pricing tier in each local currency). This box includes an event ticket, plus five Ultra Balls.
