Okay so to clarify right off the bat I am not looking to calculate the chance to catch that wild Bulbausr that just appeared and I am definitely not looking for this web page:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Catch_ratehttp://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Catch_rate
I have read it and it doesn't help me... (unless I'm overtired and I've overlooked what I need)

So, what I'm after is:
Bulbasaur has a catch rate of 45 (45/255) and the catch rate % is 5.9% so...
How do I convert that 45/255 into 5.9%?

Because even if you know basic math, 45/255 is closer to 25% (well 17%) than it is 5.9%

I'm too tired to figure this out and your help is very much appreciated!

Hi there.

I'm not responsible for the any of the wiki page. I'll do what I can with the calculation.

So there are actually two formulas that are relevant in the calculation in the wiki. It's not just simply the catch rate / 255. The two formulas are given: Catch rate - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia The formulas that are relevant are "a" and "b." Essentially you make the assumption that bonus ball = bonus status = 1. In other words, all the bonuses are one. We also assume that HP current = HP max which allows us to cancel out the HP terms in the numerator and denominator and all that's left is a = 1/3 * catch rate.

Now we just plug that into b. Now, the wiki says:

To perform a shake check, a random number between 0 and 65535 (inclusive) is generated and compared to b. If the number is greater than or equal to b, the check "fails".

Four shake checks are performed. The Pokémon is caught if all four shake checks succeed. Otherwise, the Poké Ball will shake as many times as there were successful shake checks before the Pokémon breaks free.

So we plug "45" in as "a" to formula b. After we find b, we raise b to the fourth power and we get .058 or about 5.8%.

Here's my work if it doesn't really make sense. I hope this helps: (Note that I did plenty of rounding)
